2.
Looks intriguing.. a bit like PowerTab/Guitar Pro for Nintendo perhaps ? Might get it and stick it in the missus's... ooerr.
Guitar Hero for DS came out the other day... The DS package I got my daughter is the Guitar Hero package... the DS has the GH logo on the case... GH is a little weird... you get a little keypad adaptor that slots into the case and has a velcro tab you use to secure the DS in your palm with the fingers of your left hand resting on the four buttons. You use a large pick shaped stylus to trigger the notes using the one screen while the song notes come down the other screen... 3.
Yep you also want Electroplankton for some ambience stuff
that's just too weird... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3v6npP8OZk bit like those surface tables Bjork uses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7QE5tHFwTg
4.
I used to own a Tanglewood Warrier the action I could get on that was stupidly low and the sound was great too for the price, but it isn't really a high end bass if that is what you are looking for.
I have a Tanglewood Warrior IV... the action when I got it was stupidly low... I've had to raise it quite a bit as I like to use nice "fat" rest strokes... with plenty of finger pad meat...
5. Just treated my daughter to a Guitar Hero DS Lite package as a post exam present and also got her the "Jam Sessions" game... it's more than a game, it's a fantastic tool for roughing out songs with and knocking up professional sounding jam tracks... here's a youtube by the "games's" designer... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00R-Ar9MH6E and another I found which shows the potential: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pbOGNR4VlY
6. strange just tried it myself
7. If it was the 5 string Grind, I'd have been beating your door down... and waving money in your face...
8. Rockschool expect you to perform pieces that are set and some of them have an improv bit in them... RGT expect you to be able to perform set riff patterns over a chord sequence and then make appropriate variations to the patterns and also to be able to gin up a suitable accompaniment line to the chords and riff style the examiner plays to you. You are also expected to be able to play any scale and arpeggio asked of you from the grade or even the previous grades. The higher the grade, the more starting positions you're expected to be able to play it from and the more complex the scales/arpeggios. I have a distinct preference for the RGT system... It makes you develop your own lines and know what you are doing theory wise to make them sound good... I'm currently aiming for Grade 5 RGT for the winter exam session. My teacher has chucked me in the deep end saying it would be pointless for me to go for the lower grades.
9. thanks guys... pay day it will be then for doing the dirty and trading my RB6 in for the Line6 I normally play village halls, back rooms of pubs, church halls... we can't go very loud anymore because of noise curfews etc. and I think the Line6 would do well with my new electro-acoustic bass...
10. I'm quite intrigued by the concept of a 1 foot cube weighing only 24 lbs and handling 75 watts http://line6.com/lowdownstudio110/ http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=5495 is it worth pulling the trigger on one? Apparently it's really a modeling amp with the bonus of 75 watts & a 10" speaker attached I currently have a Laney RB6... 15 inch speaker, weighs a heck of a lot and puts out some 165 watts if I hook up a satellite cab to it and 100 without... now the Laney does sound good... however, I'm sick of humping it round and nearly putting my back out in the process, especially to gigs that really don't need all that power... I live on floor 3 of a block of flats that isn't tall enough for a lift so does anyone else have experience of the Line6 then?
11. Back on the chain gang - the pretenders Take these chains from my heart - Hank Williams (Take these) Chains - Judas Priest It should have been me - Gladys Knight & THe Pips
12. anything that's on a "Best Smooth Jazz Album In The World Ever" compilation... the problem is the punters expect to hear you play it exactly like it is on the record...
13.
what, you mean, scrape the squier one off? Can you buy the fender decals?
not genuine Fender ones... you can buy "pattern" ones on the web, but Fender hunt down and send C&D notices as fast as they can find them... Several sites I had bookmarked have been shut down. I'm planning to possibly replace the Squier logo with a custom one in the Fender style but saying "Paul's Jazz Bass" rather than "Squier Jazz Bass"
14. not having a Squier Standard jazz means I can't make a meaningful comment... however, I'll note this... the Duncan Designed pickups on my VMJ are very hot, the control plate wiring and pots are of very good standard, and there's been a lot of attention gone into the finish of the block inlays, binding and fretwork on the maple fingerboard. They're real block inlays on mine, not painted on.
15. the Squier is up to the mark... the only drawback with it is that it has the Squier Logo... some people can't get past that fact...
16.
I just had the thought: Do professional actors complain about about ameteur dramatics people in the same way? its a similar sort of situation.
I know one thing... amateur dramatic companies have to get permission to stage most plays that are still in copyright... they also are responsible for paying royalties when they get permission as well. Some playwrights have conditions such that if the play is currently being performed by a professional company, the amateurs can't stage it. http://www.methuen.co.uk/performancerights.php shows the sort of thing I'm on about... playing covers would be a real bind to organise if you had to get permission for every song you wanted to perform instead of just handing a set list over to the venue manager to use for his returns. Can you imagine the fun to be had if you found you couldn't perform a particular song because someone else was already performing it that night in your town... Mind you that could be advantageous as well... sorry, we can't do Mustang Sally & Lady In Red for your wedding party as another group has already been allocated them
17.
Theres a band where i live undercutting everybody charging £30 a man ! And they arent kids they've been playing a few years!
that's just "criminal"... you need to send Big Vinny round to re-educate them...
18. this guy is busy doing free backing tracks. http://www.freejamtracks.com/tracks4bass.html he's had requests for reggae and is apparently working on something. If I want specific tunes to jam over, I tend to track down guitar pro files on the web and play them back with the bass muted there's lots of legal free mp3s out there on several websites, the only problem is the bass tends to be mixed in the middle and it's difficult to eq it out without messing up the drums. The French have a very active reggae scene of their own compositions try Jamendo and search on the tag reggae http://www.jamendo.com/en/ http://www.jamendo.com/en/tag/reggae also try here: http://www.broz-reggae-tabs.com/compos/liste_compo.php lots of very good stuff
19. oh heck... this still for sale? Pity I've just won the charity auction or else I'd have had it off you right this instant... I'm missing the passive Peavey BXP I sold two months ago...
20. I seem to recall that a gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't so the modern equivalent would be: A gentleman knows how to slap a bass, but declines... and I'm convinced that "slapping & popping" may be one of the reasons electric bassists have so much trouble getting Jazz gigs... people go with the DB sound because they know there's no danger of the bass solo being a slap & pop fest...
21. it was mentioned in the second comment.
22. I'm perfectly happy with my Squier VMJ... my bass teacher just wishes they did a lefty version... he already has a lefty Fender Jazz, but really likes my Squier.
23.
Was it the Beautiful South that did "Don't marry her, f**k me"? That seems like a safe bet to avoid at a wedding gig.
should have a go at the original lyrics for Perfect 10... those that were being played on the radio in the first week before someone realised what was being sung about... the censored version makes no sense... heck, even the album version when it was released was neutered... with the original lyrics, it all makes sense what gate she's singing about... and the song is extremely lewd when you know what's being alluded to http://www2.uol.com.br/cante/lyrics/Beauti..._Perfect_10.htm ^^^ the proper lyrics ^^^ they changed "big fat eight" to "big fat aim"
24. OK, the charity I would like my contribution to go to is: Drake Music http://www.drakemusicproject.org/makepage.asp?page=1 I take it that's the correct charity on the list on page 1.
25. I've now discovered I'll not be around to defend my bid on Saturday evening, so I'll up my bid now to £200
