Hi all. Never thought I would say this but I am currently considering selling my 2013 Thunderbird and getting a Thundergun (or possibly a Mercalli). Now I love my Thunderbird, but I feel that pre-lock down, I was possibly a bit too precious over where I would take it gig wise. Plus the case could double as a coffin 😂. I use the TBird for everything from funk/Motown to Rock/Power Pop and everything in between. I do not see it as a one trick pony at all and love the tone it produces with rounds or flats, with a plectrum, fingers or even a bit of slap. But the Thundergun just looks so damn tasty, I can't stop thinking about it. The price point seems really reasonable too. Just got no chance of trying one out really. Now I already have a P, a Jazz, a Harley Benton Stingray HH copy, a Vintera Mustang, a Westone Thunder II and an EBO, so have loads of other tones on tap already and my worry is that I will lose a particularly distinctive tone from my armoury for the sake of GAS. So if you would mind, and just for the fun of it let me have your opinions - the more subjective and opinionated the better 😁👌. Ta very muchly. P. S posted this on talkbass too so it will be interesting to compare the opinions!!!

Three pages in and no mention of one of the greatest bass players of any genre ever in my opinion. Ladies and gentlemen I give you the fantastic Mr Rob Wright of the epic Nomeansno. Pretty much any of his bass lines are wonderful. This will get you started...

I started with a plectrum in the mid 80s. By about 88 I was all fingers and occasional thumb. In fact I probably became a bit of an anti plectrum snob if I am honest. Now, get this. During the first lockdown, I bought a mustang. I also watched the AWB on Soul Train doing Cut The Cake and loved the tone. So I thought I would have a little dally with a plectrum too. I am now a fully fledged plectrum player who can still (and do occasionally) use fingers and thumb, but I get neither the satisfaction, tone I want, nor the feel and groove I get with a plectrum when jamming my own stuff. Obviously I will use fingers when playing along with or covering Motown, or that early Bootsy with James Brown stuff for example. But for my own style and sound "the pick is just sick" 😂 Sorry for the long post, but I am still gobsmacked at how the little. 73 nylon Dunlop has has made me her forever bi%ch. 😂😂

Never had an issue with it myself - yet - and I like the fact that there is a skill involved in the finishing. However, the best thing is..... that the smell when I put this bad boy away will never get old...... mmmmmm 😂😂

Don't blame you. I love a nitro finish too!!
