I appereciated the suggestion, but had new/different set on the way by then. Not sure if it was a faulty string, just worn out, or just something that these strings do. -

Hooray! New strings have completely solved the problem. The Warwick Black labels arrived so I fitted those. Not only can I get the E-string action down with the others, I have been able to lower the action on all the strings by quite bit as well. Not sure if it is just a one off rogue E-string, or if this is a systematic problem with the 'Red labels'. Tension in the black labels seems slightly higher than in the Reds. They seem slightly brighter than the Reds, which may well be because they're new, but fundamentally sound much the same. Physically the Black label B and E strings have a significantly finer outer winding than the Reds. The only thing I'm not yet convinced by is that the Blacks have a taper wound B string. It seems to sound a bit 'hollow' compared to the original (non tapered) Reds. BUt whether that is the taper or something else I really don't know. Newtones are on the way and I'll report on those when they're fitted. Thanks for all your suggestions on this. -
I don't actually stand up for Mr Philips, but in the past I have felt a bit uncomfortable at the way tat people here jump on the band wagon of slagging him off. Seems a bit like kicking a man when he's down. However: That clip is appalling. Why would anyone post something like that of themselves? Does make you wonder if he actually watched it before posting it.

Is it just me who couldn't relate to many of the demo pieces? All very clever, but (IMHO) none of them that related to the 'core/classic' use/function of a bass guitar. Where was the slow blues demo, or the classic rock type bass line, or the counterpoint?

AFAIK Melody / harmony assistant does all the tabs & stuff - it even does fingering for a diatonic accordion where you can specofiy your own keyboard layout. Note that I've not tried any others, so am not recomending this one over the others - just pointing out as an option.

A slight update - I've ordered some different strings to try (see the stings for a medium scale fiver thread, and also noticed that the Fret Rattle, if that's what is, is not instant but develops about a second after I've actually plucked the string. In my mind it seems like the energy in the harmonics is transferring to the fundamental as the note settles? -
Thanks for all your thoughts folks. Iv'e gone double whammy and ordered a set of Warwick Black labels AND a set of Newtone Diamond Round Core Nickel Plated! Will report back once I have them and I've tried them out. CB PS @Blink I've used Status hot wires in the past, the half round, and loved them and their still on some of may basses. However their range seems a bit limited at the moment, and the don't list any medium scales.

Oh yes, forgot that one. I've been spoilt rotten in the past by having played with a superb & sensitive ex pro guitarists, with no ego problems. Unfortunately he gave up banding and the current guitarist, although generally very good and a good egg, seems to play everything at the same volume, irrespsctive of what's required. THis is a fairly new line up so when we're better aquainted I'll say something about it (and no doubt he'll have things to point out to me as well). A classic example is something like the start of China Grove where there's a couple of loud chords with a sort of much quieter echo (I think by a different guitarist in the original), but this bloke plays it all at the same volume, which, to my ear doesn't sound as good.

And, I'd have thought that anyone interested enough to want the correct logo on their kit is going to want it to be in good condition.

Anyone who 'noodles' between songs in rehearsal, which is normally the guitarist, and generally bits of song that never will be in our repertoire. Again in a rehearsals - Singers who insist on talking through their mic all the time, even though everyone else is conversing at normal volumes. Oh - and band members who don't practice the agreed material but come along with loads of other suggestions instead. Edited again- Singers who don't even own their own mic and do FA to help set up/breakdown.

Too long in that you end up with the fully wound part of the string going round the tuning peg, possible several times, which most string manufacturers say is not a good thing. If you cut it as you suggest then there's a chance that the end wont go down the slot in the tuner.
