  1. I thought that there was pretty conclusive evidence that a CD or uncompressed (file size wise rather than acoustically) digital format matches or exceeds vinyl in terms of reproduction fidelity. Compression in an acoustic sense is more a case of current (annoying) production practices rather than the medium used, and, as has already been mentioned, the RIAA standard for vinyl recordings includes compression and decompression of the bass anyway. Some people might prefer the sound of vinyl over CD etc, and it may indeed sound 'warmer' (I quite like vinyl myself), and this is perfectly valid, but to claim that it is a more accurate reproduction seems unfounded. The other thing with vinyl is that it inherently degrades every item you play it. It might sound wonderful the first time, by the 100th time it won't sound the same. Personally I am more interestinged in listening to the music rather than the quality of reproduction.
  2. Why, if I may be so bold?
  3. My worry is what you will find once the glue is out. I wouldn't be surprised to fins a stripped thread. Does superglue soften at all with heat - e.g. a soldering iron??
  4. or a band name?
  5. He gets around a bit considering he's meant to be in the basement.
  6. And he always so long at the fair.
  7. But good for your vitamin D.
  8. I love church organs for the bass, literally an earth moving experience. Unfortunately you really have to be there as any sensible loudspeaker/PA cannot do it justice.
  9. Surely an 'upgrade' should give some tangible improvement, and by tangible I don't mean a different finish even if it was wonderful..
  10. I have a Carvin BX700 which has the same problem, but also the blue LED looks terrible again the red fascia. Would change them to yellow ones if I could be arsed.
  11. You deserve a medal for listening that far. Took one for the team there. and how many keyboards can one band need?
  12. The string bits yes but, to my ear, spoilt by the body tapping.
  13. You could never do this date and never agreed to it. The band should have told the pub that they couldn't do that date and suggested another one. For this gig the pub needs to find another band. When you say that "the keys player will play bass", do you mean he will play a bass guitar, or that he will play the bass line on the keyboard? Either way it is unlikely to sound good after just one rehearsal and the reputation of the band will suffer. I'd tell them that you don't want to do it, and that you'd be thinking carefully about the future if they do. If they go ahead anyway then it's time to condier your options. I would be less upset if they'd got a dep in for the evening.
  14. What you can do On a PC at least) is to play the stream or whatever and record it directly to a wav etc by setting up your recording SW to take the 'mix' as it's input. Don't know what it's like quality wise, but better than loosing what you've paid for when it all goes tits up.
  15. More of these?
  16. Personally I think that the Vinyl resurgence is just a flash in the pan. I'd give it 5 years at most. Who wants a medium that inherently degrades every time you play it? As for Cd's it's still my preferred medium, but then I'm an old Fogey. Just a thought - If you copy your CDs to another medium and then sell the originals are you not in breach of copyright?
  17. Also, according his messages it is 'brand new sealed in it's box', 'Box opened only', and it's been 'in my store in the showcase'. At least two of these statements would apear to be lies.
  18. He describes it as 'lovely'. I wouldn't. Also £1, but £15 postage.
  19. Or just use plywood in the first place!
  20. I generally brace the body between my knees and pull the head back, thus taking the strain off the truss rod/nut, make the adjustment and let go of the head. The bass goes pretty well back into tune though obviously needs minor tweaks. Never (yet) had a problem doing it this way.
  21. I think that, to a certain extent, a jam session should be about working to the lowest common denominator, or somewhere not too far above, so that most people can join it. If you want to show case then you need an open mike, or at least check that everyone at the jam is happy for you to do what could end up being a solo piece. But yes, having a list of stuff to work on is a good way forward - allows some new material to be introduced without excluding people (as long as said people were at the previous session). (I've just edited my earlier post as well)
  22. Except that the set list is likely to change from gig to gig, whereas the song lyrics generally stay the same.
  23. Not me, but I knew someone on a Morris dancing who left a rather nice concertina under a car to keep the rain off ... You can guess the rest.
  24. Not so much an accident - although I didn't actually mean to do it. Playing a melodeon at an informal Barn dance event* I had had a few drinks and was playing the drummist's high hat with the bass end of the melodeon (just the ocassional crash). It was all going so well until I skewered my bellows on the hi-hat pin and the the whole bellows ripped off the frame. * it was actually a sponsored dance marathon which involved doing the same dance** continuously for about 5 hours. ** Sir Roger De Coverly - very popular in Shropshire back in those days.
