PMT Birmingham. Praise where it's due...
Count Bassy replied to jonnythenotes's topic in General Discussion
My lad has also used PMT in Northampton and has had great service, both buying, and getting a ssymbol replced under warranty. -
I was transfixed all the way through. Thought it was brilliant. - and a real eye opener on the man. I thought Wilko came out of it very well.

Neither of those two items but I run a 112MNT (with an LMIII) and I love the sound.

Intonation - why are strings different lengths
Count Bassy replied to Dropzone's topic in General Discussion
I've experimented with compensated nuts/zero frets, and I've got to say that the effect was remarkable, tuning in the first 3 or 4 frets was noticibly better, without having to try too hard, and the variations at the bridge became much smaller. However the lower the action at the nut/zerofret the less noticable it becomes, and these days I have it a lot lower than I used to. -
I have the Quantum (32" Cricket Bat). Brilliant tone & action (IMHO). Sadly I've moved onto 5 strings, so it's not played much these days. Re the sharp string end! What you do is clamp them up, markthem and cut thjem about 3mm shorter. That way no sharp ends sticking out, and you can use any strings rtaher than hving to hunt down double ball ends. (and I've never had a string slip on it either).

Why are different 500watt heads rated differently at 8ohms?
Count Bassy replied to dave_bass5's topic in Amps and Cabs
So the answer to your question is 'because they have differing power supplies.'
And output devices/Heat extraction. -
Although doubling the watts "is hardly worth it" in terms of volume , is there any case for saying that if you are running a 250 watt amp at 250 watts then it is running flat out, so components will be maxxed out. For the same watts and volume from a 500W amp the amp and its components will running well below max, and hence might be more reliable? I might be talking Bollocks.
So are some of the tracks mentioned above just pieces of music that happen to have a bit of singing in them?
Quite. My comment re Tubular Bells was meant to be tongue in cheek. Same goes for Pick Up The Pieces
Mike oldfeild: Tubular Bell's Can't be arsed to time it, but the vocals don't come in until well into the second side of the LP!
The Foo Fighters - are they THAT good?
Count Bassy replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
No, no, and thrice no. Saw them a few months ago and was not impressed. Not my sort of thing at all. -

Having seen Royal Blood, I (personally) wouldn't bother to try and emulate anything they do. -

XLR Splitter/booster/ daisy chain posibilities
Count Bassy replied to Count Bassy's topic in General Discussion
Usual way to do outdoor PA like this is 100v line transformers. You could probably hire a decent setup for the day and have something that does the job properly quite cheaply.
Thanks. I'll make enquiries. -
XLR Splitter/booster/ daisy chain posibilities
Count Bassy replied to Count Bassy's topic in General Discussion
It sounds like you are looking for one of these http://www.performan...mplifier/32581/ or these https://www.studiosp...l.aspx?p=359431
Thanks for the idea, but those would have the distibution at the to of the hill, and cables of, sy, 20m, 100m, 150m, 230m etc running down the hill. I was hoping for some way of daisly chaining, like a multidrop network. - also the second one is somewhat expensive!. I guess I was thinking of some sort of reverse DI box. XLR in, line output (to the local amp) and buffered/boosted XLR Balanced output (to go to the next box) -
As an aside: I saw the Foo Fighters at the MK/National Bowl a few months ago. Supported by Royal Blood and Iggy Pop. Of the three Iggy Pop is the only one I'd bother to see again.

For a few years now our village has runs a Soapbox Derby, and I get dragged in to help out with the sound. Being a fund raising thing we try to do it on the cheap, borrowing PA amps and speakers from all and sundry and cobbling them together with very long XLR leads between them. Generally take the feed into an amp via various adapters, then take an aux out of that amp (via various adapters again) to the next one down the hill and so on. Last year we had four amps, each driving two speakers, with getting on for 80 metres between them. This sort of works, but each year we end up with different amps, and getting them to work together with adequate volumes, and no hum is complicated and time consuming (it's all set up the morning of the event, and taken down again straight afterwards). SInce it looks like becoming a regular event I was thinking of ways to simplify this: What I was thinking was some sort of box that takes a balanced XLR signal in, and gives a buffered XLR out (to feed to the next such box) and a line output to feed to the amplifer (probably 10 metres away at most). Due to needing the line out and the number of boxes in the run I think they'd need to be active, though still isolated to avoid loop and noise problems. The total run would be around 400 meters. (Fortunately we have a contact at Radio Northamton and can borrow very long XLR leads for the event). PP3 Battery powered would not be a problem as it's only for a few hours. Any one got any ideas?

Marshall DBS7210 Head and 7041 Cab -bargain -now only £250
Count Bassy replied to V10Mike's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
-
I'd imagine they are for sale because they hold value well so anyone who has one but wants to free up some cash can do so knowing they're likely to get a good price. I tried one once and thought it was fantastic. Sadly I didn't and still don't have the funds.
The one on Ebay is at a BIN of £1000. I believe the list price was £1600, so not holding value that well for something that's been out less than a year.

Ah well, I blame it on my age. I basically sadi that this is one of my favourite songs, but that this is not my favourite version of it.
