Going to see your old bands - mixed emotions ?
Count Bassy replied to lojo's topic in General Discussion
If I was your guitarist I'd pretty soon get peed off with being told what to play all the time. I was in a band where the drummer and guitarist kept telling me what to play. It didn't last! -
I found it quite an interesting, relevant and positive contribution to the thread.
Me too.

Forgive my ignorance, but aren't all pre-amps with tone controls filter based? If not what's the essential difference, in principle rather than implementation, between and AGC one and any other?
It's a bit of minefield. First you think of a name that you like, so you do a bit of research and there's a band out there that already has it. Start again, you think of another one and hey presto no other band by that name but the rest of the band hate it....And round and round it goes. I'm in the same situation....
How much should you worry about using the same name as anyone else? Twenty years ago you could have the same name as a band 50 miles away and you'd never know. Nowdays you get worried if a band in the states has the same name. I guess it depends on if you're aiming for world fame, or a few local gigs.
We are over in the states at the moment and it's pretty big news over here and I seem to recall that tonight on tv they have Paul and Ringo on tv ( not sure if it's an interview or a concert or both as I only caught a glimpse ). Think I will tune in because those scenes when they arrived here for the first time and the whole Ed Sullivan show thing are still amazing fifty years later and it's unlikely anything like that will be repeated ever again.
I'm in the US as well at the moment, and as you say it's big news: "The Beatles and the British invasion" (and Jay Leno's retiring from the Tonight show). Mind you it might just be that the news programs and clips are repeated so often that makes it seems the big deal.

"Get over it" - The Eagles. Probably the only Eagles song that I've heard that I like.
Some artists seem to be like King Midas - trying to control something that ultimately can't really be controlled.
I think you mean Canute!. Mind you Midas turned everything he touched to gold, and some might say that this also applies to Prince And in defence of Canute, one modern theory seems to be that he deliberately 'tried' to hold back the tide, knowing he would fail, to demonstrate that he was not a god, rather than to prove that he was.
Hmmm, aye that would be a consideration. I use a standard jack cable at the moment, and the 5m speaker cable that I've got is a a standard jack too. I'll get myself a speakon cable eventually. I'd have a back-up if the speakon cable was ever to get damaged.
A properly made speakon cable will probably be the most robust cable in your set up
Hi guys After purchasing one of these a few months ago I recently found out why people got annoyed with them, they don't last long. I've been looking for some alternatives on the net and can't find anything that does the same job. The most 'wanted' thing for me is a 3.5 mm input to connect my macbook, iPhone into. Does anyone else use sonething similar? I'm not looking to get a DI box or one of them to toneport things. Just sonething that plugs into the bass has the 3.5 input and headphone ports.
You should be demanding a replacement or refund, and let Vox know of the problem!
-
But that's for when you want to use that certain attack or technique. Also doesn't everyone play dynamically rather than digging in all the time.
Yes, but I guess you have to have your bass set up to cope with the worse case. If you play quietly for 99% of the time, but "dig in" for effect for 1% then you still need your bass set up to cope with the digging in
-
Because 'digging in' provides a different kind of attack as well as being louder.
+ Many. A very different tone
I've heard of people recording vocals in the bathroom because of the natural reverb, but I don't think there'd be enough rehearsal space around the bath for an entire band. I recommend putting the drummer in the bath itself. Also, you may struggle to find an electrical socket to plug your amps into.
Mind you when you see the ads on the telly for a new bathroom the rooms they show you are about as big as my house. ... but yes, put the drummer in the bath anyway. If nothing else it will catch the sweat!!
Your setup benefits from a short speaker cable, the amp will have to work too hard to push enough current through a long lead to drive the speakers. Resistance will skyrocket oversuch a lenght I think.
I think the speaker cable resistance would actually be pretty negligible: 2.5 sqmm cable is around 7.4 Ohms per kilometre, so 15 ohms for a round trip, so 0.15 ohm for 10 meters. 4 sqmm cable is around 9 ohms for a round trip of 1 kilometre, 0.09 ohms for 10 metres. This is for standard industrial cable - super low oxygen copper is probably slightly less.
Actually NONE of the residents pre-date Night & Day setting up where they are. It is situated on Oldham St which in years gone by was the place to shop in Manchester but over the years shops closed and it became a retail wasteland. The only people to be found in that area were druggies and working girls, you would not venture there of an evening. The area was composed of Wholesale Outlets/Warehouses and shops with storage/offices above, no living accomodation. Night & Day took a big risk opening up and as a result more venues followed their lead, Dry Bar, Matt & Phreds and were all pretty successful. About 10 years ago the surrounding areas started to be developed. Buildings changed from retail to flats, mills to apartments, anything that was empty appeared to be fair game. The area quickly took on a trendy persona and got called the Northern Quarter. The bars and music venues were in a lot of ways responsible for helping this transition as the attraction of having all this nightlife on the doorstep, was really appealing. So who then is to blame? You could argue that Manchester Council, in the interest of swelling their Council Tax coffers, have allowed this conversion/development to go on unchecked. After all they get nothing for empty commercial property. Or is it developers cutting corners on sound insulation, who knows. Al I do know is that Night & Day have been there the longest.
Thanks for the detail. I suspected that that might be the case but thought I'd add my "(obviously some residents may still pre-date that)" to allow for not knowing the area or the history. Whatever the reason for the developments, lack of sound insulation in the flats etc. The fact is that people moved into these flats knowing that there was a venue close by, so unless the volume really has been turned since October, they haven't really got cause to complain (IMO). Re the increase in noise despite the venues denying it: is it possible that the sound proofing has been compromised in some way? Possibly by recent building work or similar?

I fancied a G&L fiver for a long time, and came across one in a shop while on holiday. Sat down with it, all excited like, and just couldn't get on with it. It wasn't set up well, but it was more than that - just didn't feel right. Disappointing because I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't for me. Just thankful that I I didn't buy one blind and then find out.
Rig == amp and associated gubbins. Rig generally implies (to me anyway) separate amp head and cab(s) (speaker cabinet(s)) rather than a combo (all in one amp and speaker(s)).
Now you see I've always taken rig to include everything except the bass itself, so would include a combo in that. ... but then again if someone asked what rig I was using I would probably include the bass as well!
Signed, even though i live in London and cant here it lol. I do think if a music venue is operating in a close residential environment they should be made to do as much as possible to ensure the noise is not an issue for those that choose not to want to hear it. I do hope they can stay open but its not so silly that someone wants a quite home.
But the point is that if you want a quiet home then don't move in to a home close to an established live music venue, which is apparently what some of the complainers in this case have done. After all the venue has been operating in this way for 20 years apparently. (obviously some residents may still pre-date that)
-
Did you even read that the petition is basically a load of crap and they are not being threatened with closure? All that the residents are asking for (some of them being there for 10 years +) is for the volume to go back to its last level as the venue increased their volume level massively. That's it.
Well they are being threatened with having to turn it down, which might well result in closure if they loose their clientèle. Well I signed before all the counter arguments came out, and I sort of wish I'd waited for details of this specific case. However past experience still suggests that Councils in general tend to jump in in support of the complainer, hence my signing at the time. Unfortunately the "discussion" on Manchester Confidential (ManCon) is hardly a reasoned one, on either side. And, re the arguments about it only having got louder since October, well to some extent that's what the complainers would say isn't it. Not saying they're lying, not saying they're wrong, but in case like this the truth is often the first casualty (on both sides)! If nothing else the petition will force the two sides to talk and hopefully come to a compromise.

check this awesome invention out.

I thought that the device had a distinct sound of its own. While the two "unassisted" guitarists posted where obviously very clever, they did not sound (to me) the same as the device. Whether you like the sound of the device is a different and personal matter! I can't see a great market for it myself, but I have no philosophical problem with it being out there as an option. -
Gaillard D/G/accs, two year build time. Gorgeous box but not right for me. Steve
Shame, especially after a 2 year wait! I suppose with something like that it's difficult to find one to try out in advance. My main squeeze is an old Castagnari RIK , which is a great box (when I say old - I bought it nearly new off Rhys Wesson about 24 years ago). To be honest I very rarely stray on to the A row, and a two row would have been both cheaper and lighter! But I got it at a good price so I put up with the extra weight. Often thought about trading it against a 2.5 row, but never did. I don't play it much at all these days as the Ceilidh band is very quite, and I'm enjoying bass in the rock band more. I did buy a Hohner Preciosa and got it retuned to G/D, but that has sat in its case for a few years now. The tone and and punch were great, but didn't really get on with the compressed keyboard, and the novelty of its size soon wears off!
Not just with basses. I finally got to buy the melodeon of my dreams (£3,500), sold a pile of stuff (including a couple of boxes, a bass and some other gear) to get it and it lasted 3 months. Fortunately I was able to pass it on to someone else at the same price BUT what I can't get back is one of the boxes I sold to make it happen, which in fact this one was a replacement for, and that is what really gets to me. Steve
Don't just taunt us!! As a melodeon man myself I need details.
FWIW...the best wedding band I recall... as in very different for me at the time, was a Celidh band with a good caller. Got everyone involved as no one avoided the dances as everyone looked as stupid as everything else.
+1. Far more sociable as practically any age group can join in and enjoy it, and it encourages people to interact, between ages and the two families involved. Plus when the caller is doing his bit between dances the guests can actually talk to each other without having to leave the room. A rock band is great if it's your/the guests thing, but offers nothing to guests who are not into it (Still better than a disco though!).
