I remember borrowing £15 off my sister to buy my first ever bass in 1967, which was a second-hand Burns Sonic, and it took me 10 weeks to pay her back, luckily, it was great, but if it turned out to be rubbish, I would have been gutted! Today’s equivalent would be a kid spending £200 on one of his bodged up guitars, and then finding out it was virtually unplayable, and it would probably take the kid a long time to save the money for another one. Ok, we are only talking a couple of hundred quid for his disasters, BUT, for some people that is a lot of money. Most of us have probably seen “Watchdog” and “Rip-Off Britain” where they highlight individuals who are conning innocent people, so why should we not do the same, and as MistyFingers says: “And as a public service, if the threads here prevent one naive bassist in the making from buying one of his basses and being put off for life, then it's a good thing, surely”.
There seem to be a load of people slagging him off for what he does, and I'd agree that some of his ideas and descriptions seem a bit odd, but has anyone here actually bought or tried one of his creations? Has MistyFingers tried one? So come on then- Someone own up: Who here has actually bought or tried a Mark D Phillips' guitar and can say thus categorically state that they play badly, or don't work? If not then how can we possibly comment on them??. It just seems to me that there is a mob mentality at work here, Someone slagged this person off so let's all jump on the band wagon and take the piss out him as well. After all he straightens necks, he polishes frets, he adjusts bridges and nuts, which are all things that a 'luthier' would do. How well he does these things cannot be judged by photo's on E-bay (well I can't tell from pictures anyway). OK, he then does things like leaving holes where he's reduced the number of strings or taken pots out, which are things that a luthier (or indeed most people) probably wouldn't do. I am not saying that he does a good job, or a bad job. I really don't know, but does anyone here actually know, from hands on experience? If so please speak up.
(Can a carcass be alive BTW? And is this Phillips geezer dying or something?)
1: I wondered if you'd spot that one. 2: Not as far as I'm aware but the way we are tearing into him conjures up the image of the vultures around a (this time completely dead) corpse.
I see a fairly simple solution - don't read about it or join in! A bit of harmless fun, plus of course the tool deserves it.
Yeah, I guess. I'll just walk by on the other side of the road and hope the BassChat mob never come for me..
-
Personally I'm starting to feel a bit uncomfortable with the amount of slagging of that we give this bloke here. I'm not in anyway defending what he does, but some basschat members are starting to act like a flock of vultures fighting over a not yet dead carcass, or a gang of playground bullies, in their eagerness to get in and give the bloke kick when he's down. Not very edifying, and In my opinion this is not basschat at it's best.

Buffered pedals, True Bypass Pedals and Long Leads
Count Bassy replied to ratman's topic in General Discussion
I think there's a thread about lead length & tone in the technical forum. Basically the 'Buffer', as in most active basses, will have low output impedance, so any capacitance in the lead after the buffer will have little filtering effect. With a passive bass the output impedance is far higher and the combination of resistance and cable capacitance acts like a low pass filter. Good cables have very low capacitance anyway and so are less affected. -
only issue with my cab is that i wish i'd had money at the time to upgrade to the grill cloth!
Am I the only one who prefers the look of a metal grill to a piece of cloth?

All very clever, but incredibly dull to watch. Give me a proper band any day of the week.

Surely, if you sell something to anyone at below the free market price, irrespective of how much you paid for it, then you are effectively taking money out of your pocket(/family coffers) and putting it into theirs. If it's a tenner then not a problem, if its £200 then I'd only do that for my immediate family. As for the idea of "wanting to get back what I paid": Never did understand that one. You buy at a price that you are prepared to pay, and sell at a price that others are prepared to pay. This may be more or less than you paid, but to think that you automatically deserve to get what you paid for it seems a bit odd (to me at least).

What do you like about this bass?
Count Bassy replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
The string spacing. -
How racist is this: Naming instruments after terms of racist abuse! Musicman need to make a public apology for this.

Blood on Strings - is Meths the Answer?

I'd have thought cold water would be best for blood. -
No doubt he is a great bassist and deserves all the credit he gets. However, the music on the clip seems to be more about technique/chops with little in the way of relating to an audience. I could not relate to it. YMMV.
Yep, he seems to have lost his way somewhere. -
Pino Palladino...once again...how sh*t hot is he?
IHe was good in Wherever I Lay My Hat Though ....... the bass was right up there with the lead vocal as the two equally most important instruments in that song y'see.
Ah, but "Wherever I Lay My Hat" was a cover version, and so, according to many people here , can be of no value at all. -
The solo at the start of "Handy". Love it, and often play around in the same vein (in private only), but never quite cracked it as such. Problem being that even if I did crack it when and where would you ever get the chance to use it?
-
I bought a second hand John East unit and thought it had a problem. He took it and checked it out for me free of charge (It was OK - my mistake, and I sent him a fiver for a pint anyway). Not quite your situation I know, but I got the impression that he is a very honourable chap, and that you'll probably be OK.

Wilko Johnson at Wickham Festival (Yesterday)
Count Bassy replied to Count Bassy's topic in General Discussion
Seen Wilko with Norman W-R - absolutely fantastic, though Norman is probably the sweatiest musician I've ever seen..... I wish I'd seen Feelgood live though; been nothing like Wilko's manic chugging guitar paired with Lee Brilleaux's snarling vocals before or since. What a great and underrated songwriter Wilko is too! Interesting reference to Norman W-R's early influences here: http://www.flyguitar...hawksworth3.php
Yes. For the Wilko set he only had a shirt on (yes- trousers, socks and shoes as well), but for the Blockheads he was wearing a suit, and the sweat came through the back of his jacket!. Mind you the effort he puts into his playing excuses a bit of sweat. On another note re Wilko: I hope that when I'm at that stage of my life I can continue to enjoy life and have a such a positive attitude as he does. Hats off to the man. In the words of Lister "What a guy". Interesting article here: http://www.independe...in-8744944.html -
Pardon? ........Well someone had to say it.

Never seen him before, and sadly I guess I won't again, but his gig at Wickham Festival last night must count amongst one of the best gigs I've seen in my life. Completely mesmerising. They could have played all night and I wouldn't have got bored. Ably assisted by Norman Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe an absolutely stunning hour of music from just three people. As for "Our Norman", I've have seen him a few times with the Blockheads and he never fails to astound me. Surely one of the true masters of the instrument, and playing exactly like I would like to play if only I had any talent. At the risk of opening up another Jaco thread I've got to say that, to me, Norman Watt-Roy is worth 10 Jaco Pastorius's any day of the week. I'm normally one to find something to criticise in any gig (yes it was good, but.......), but there just was no "but" last night.

Count Bassy replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
Many years ago I was late arriving at a gig (as a melodeon player). Got there just as the band was about to strike up with a stand-in melodeon player. I burst in through the door just in time and John Kirkpatrick stood aside to make room for me. Glory days indeed. -
Just to make it clear, I am not questioning Jaco's talent or influence (in certain genres at least), and whether I like what he did or not is inconsequential. It's just the perceived attitude ( and I know that that no-one here has actually said this as such) that he can never be 'bettered' (whatever that means) which leaves me puzzled, and strangely saddened. He may be have been very good and influential, but he was a step on the road of bass playing - not the end of the journey.
I've played bass for 39 years and had never heard of Chris Wolstenholme prior to this post. "Who's heard of who" may indicate a degree of celebrity, but doesn't say anything about bass playing ability. CB
Well, I thought whether to include him or not. To be honest I was struggling to think of any bassists that Joe public might know. and was scraping the barrel at that point. As someone mentioned, - No Mark King in the list, so let's take Wolstenholme out and put Mark King in ...... and add Suzi Quattro of course! And I totally agree with your comment on celebrity and talent, but in this "subthread" the discussion was about how many people have heard of Jaco (very few) rather than how good or influential he was.
-
I presume that you're the one doing the joking this time?
No I wasn't. Ask a cross section of joe public to name a bass player and I'm pretty sure he'd be way down the list after, for example, Paul McCartney, Sting, Phil Linnot, Chris Wolstenholme, and probably after John Entwhistle as well. Most people have never heard of him.
