Thankyou... No, Normal hands... The headstock will remain as is, i will not be shapeing it to resemble a spoon or some such, and the machine heads will be aligned as perfectly as my steel rule and i can muster, rather than dropped from 18" and screwed on however they land! Spent some time masking along the frets with some thin tape, and applied a decal, ready for a couple of coats of spray laquer for the fretboard and headstock face tommorow... Or... I might go for the unique Matt Black Hammerite Fretboard, 'Good for Metal!' look a certain ebay luthier has recomended to me.. 😉

Me again! Mapel Neck n Fretboard... Was listed as Gloss Finish, but just Matt Tint. What are my options and whats best. Was thinking a couple of coats of spray laquer on the fretboard and over a decal on the headstock face. What do you do about the frets? And see how my leftover Danish Oil goes on the back of the neck. Suppose it depends on how 'soaked in and sealed' the tint made the wood. I don't think the tint finish is resiliant as is... Lighter Fuel didnt touch it, nor 0000 wire wool, but 600 grit started to rub through in a test at the heel, so Strings would reak havoc on the fretboard as-is... Advice please! Ta Muchly...

WARNING BASSCHATERS... Over recent days it seems a cluster of what can only be described as 'Dark Materials' has been forming... Initial analysis shows the majority are of 'Metal' construction and emenate from the Far-East... While other, more complicatedly formed items of particular interest involve 'Wire' and possibly 'Magnets' and are belived to be of UK origin... Possibly as far as Hastings!.. What are these for?.. and should i be unduly concerned? I'll report further if the situation changes.

Over the bit of body, between the cavities... 1/2" - 3/4" wide, so it gets hidden under the pick guard... -

Jazz Bass Strings : Rounds or Flats?
PaulThePlug replied to PaulThePlug's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thanks for all the above suggestions and views... As the P has Adagio flats which i think are great for £13, I am thinking of a Jazz build, so have gone with Adagio Rounds in the same 45-100 for £10 Thought i'd give em a go over Rotosound or Ernie Ball.. -

As i've got older i now prefer the natural and wood finishes... particularly on classic shapes, and more particularly on a bass... save the colours for the guitars... {saying that something is on my mind...} As for Sunbursts, I dont like the red of a 3 tone and prefer a two tone brown or tobbaco burst. Your P and J look sweet as they are, I'd go down the Matching Scratchplate route if ya fancy a change... but i don't do tort, My plain and simple P in Natural...

FINISHED-ish : Budget P Bass Bitsa Build
PaulThePlug replied to PaulThePlug's topic in Build Diaries
Set-up reasonable-ish. Neck on without any shim, Gave the truss rod half a turn to take out some relief... Action reasonable Intonated OK on the DG, alrightish on the A, E still a little sharp, so saddle needs to go back, but height adjuster screws are almost at the back of the plate groves. The body came with screw mounting hole markers for a std Fender bridge, and the Gotoh-alike is meant to be a simple swap rellacement... perhaps i should of gone 3-5mm further back. Soundwise... Beefy Low Thump, with the flats... when compared to the Ibanez GSR200 PJ wearing flats. (My Ibby SR600 is a bit more modern sounding... but also with flats) Bit of a 'Ghosting' type tone from the E. Pickup Heights? Leant it to a mate who plays for a few days to see what they think... Got it back earlier today, so now its had a fortnighg bolted up to settle, I'll give it another going over, hopefully this afternoon Oh... and @Dad3353 came to my rescue when i asked about 3D printing a bezel. Great job and a matching Thumb Rest! a real Gent! I think it finishes it off nicely, together with the cream covers and headstock decal for that Custom 'One-Off' look. Weight is about 4.2Kg on luggage scales. Untill next time...🍄😵💫😉 -
Lookin' Grr-r-reat!..

Stained it is then... The brass TRC looks real nice against the colour, and the headstock won't look over dark and heavy as that TRC is quite big!

Whens the Final Whistle? '... Come on you Naturals!..'
-
If you can be arsed... I'd stain the side edges... l left, top, right... and maybe darker at the corners and flat top... to get a bit of head/body colour balance... while ya got the rag out! But not where it tapers to the back of the neck.

Drill pilot holes... Use a damp bar of soap rubbed on the threads as lube... or an Ikea Tea Light Candle! Good fitting screwdriver (Jap/Phillips/Pozi are all cross head but different...) A little tip... use a bit of thin plastic bag, like sandwich bag, or cling film, between screwdriver and screw, stops rounding, fills the gap and protects the finish particularly on black fasteners. I do this 'bag trick' over nut heads before a socket and ratchet... or to pack and improve fit on allen head bolts and the allen key.
