2.
i was just thinking i should have got one of those instead of the new boiler we had installed !
Wood fired? The boiler I mean, not the amp
 3.
The bigger your tubes, the smaller your nob Just what i heard... My amp has a single 12AX7 BTW
Oo er missus. My amp's got 4 EL34s so does this mean I have 4 medium sized nobs????????
 4. +1 to everyone else's comments vis-a-vis the roundwounds (steel) and I'll also add that if you can find any way to raise the string height at the bridge it'll help alot. Bear in mind it's an acoustic and won't have the Wal / MusicMan like sustain Mick Karn and Pino benefit from (if theirs is the mwah you're thinking of...)
 5. Here's a link to a guy in Nottingham making 1000 watt valve amps. 1000w valve amp He's using just 4 813 transmitter valves as opposed to the 20 or so 6L6s you'd need if you were to use 'ordinary' valves. I'm surprised we haven't seen more manufacturers going down this road. The only downside seems to be the rather frightening 2500 volts on the anodes but having said that, 400 volts will kill you just as dead....
 6.
Well that makes me feel better, just a silly idea, not a blatantly ridiculous one.
Most 'genius' inspiration comes from 'silly ideas'. Keep 'em coming....
 7. I think the ACG has polarised the options a bass player has. Alembic asides, it used to be you tweak your tone externally (via effects or changing amp settings), and/or use a range of basses to give you a broad range of sounds. I don't think the ACG will be a direct replacement for a rack of instruments but it's intuitive and flexible in a way 'old fashioned bass, mid, treble isn't, and given time, there are alot more useable sounds to be had. I'm happy with two basses and a v-amp but if I could only have one I'd probably install an ACG pre.
 8.
There's two themes running through this thread. Pyramid Gold strings and Darkstars. Spooky.
Probably because Phil Lesh and Jack Casady both used Pyramid Golds during their late 60s / early 70s Guild Starfire / Hagstrommed Gibson phases.
 9. I doubt a brass scratchplate would make any difference to the sound of your Jazz. If it were a half inch thick and covered the entire front of the body (and had the bridge mounted on it) you would probably notice the difference in sound (as well as the hernia...), but a couple of millimetres of standard Jazz scratchplate shape will just make it a bit heavier, as well as turning brown and eventually green if you didn't keep it polished or lacquered. I've got a brass nut on my Precision, as well as a brass Schaller bridge and it's certainly not the worse for having them, but the difference when I changed them over was quite subtle.
 10. The higher it goes the more Darth Vader will feel it. The presence on my Marshall adds a certain HiFi sparkle to the sound but for most styles I keep it more or less off.
 11. I want one. I'm probably going to have to make one as I want a fretless maple board version. The 51 neck is fantastic, like a big old tree trunk. The only thing I don't like about them now is the fact that Gordon Sumner plays one.
 12. I remember paying three hundred and forty quid for my first pre EB Stingray in red metalflake. Ooh arr, them were the days, if only I had a time machine....
 13. There are a couple of basses in this range, one of which is semi hollow and one which is fully hollow (the AFB I think - probably mentioned on Thomann somewhere) which would be louder but still not very loud. From my experience of acoustic clubs, I never had any problems or negative comments about my fretless precision and borrowed Gorilla practice amp. It would be different if you turned up with racks of basses, effects and an 8x10 SVT rig but otherwise don't worry so much. Most acoustic basses still need some kind of amplification unless the club is absolutely tiny. Take what you've got and be judged on the music you play.
 14.
Carve top is nice...But MORE Jazz basses? L-2000 / L-2500 are the best G&L made.
Couldn't agree more - I always liked the 2000/2500 series, they seemed to beat a new path beyond the Fender / MusicMan DNA, but indeed, not ANOTHER Jazz bass. I guess everyone's cashing on 'the worlds most popular bass guitar' at the moment but I'm a bit disappointed G&L are jumping on the bandwagon. I suppose MusicMan will be coming out with their version next....
 15.
Allen key - check Feeler gauge - check Back in a mo......
Feeler gauge? You must set your strings to within a few thousandths of an inch! You're a better man than me...
 16. A higher action improves your dynamics and sensitivity as you get so many more tonal options. Raising the action on my Precision was a revelation.

 18.
That Epiphone looks excellent, I really like the way it looks with the two full sized humbuckers instead of the mini humbucker that the EB-3 has in the bridge. I've long been thinking about doing something similar with one of the Squier Telecaster basses Can't say I approve of your son's choice of shirt though
Thanks Jono, yeah the bass has a pretty broad range of usable sounds now - I hope to get some more variation with some coil switching when I get some time. I'd definitely try it with a Tele bass, both for the sound and the look. BTW, the shirt was a gift from our neighbours (they're from Linwood). You probably wouldn't even have answered the post if you knew what team he really supports
 19. Thanx Alex - I'll give it a go and let ya know. What with yourself and Bernie Goodfellow it looks like the City Of Brighton & Hove is becoming the bass capital of the UK.
 20.
Could you measure the internal volume of the cab (best way is to measure the outside and subtract the wall thicknesses) and also the width and height of that slot along the top rear edge? Am thinking it might be possible to close the main back panel and then let that ventilation slot along the top act as a tuned port. Just need to work out what frequency it'll roughly be tuned to. Alex
Thanks Alex - the internal dims are 25" x 22" x 7.5", so 2.4 cubic feet or .068 cubic meters - smaller than it looks in the photos. I've got plenty of ply and OSB kicking around so I could try making a ported back panel. Oh, the slot's 15mm high by 635mm wide.
 21.
Ok - if i ever use nitro again - def going to be wearing a mask. Wish i had done mor research before commiting. question is will i live!!?? Spoke to my parents and they said i would most likely be ok - haven't experienced any dizzyness, drowsiness, coughing/shortness of breath from it... So is poly just as bad as nitro - what about spray varnishs etc as i have sanded and sprayed many things growing up as a kid! god knows what i have ingested! plus i live next to dual carriage way too!!
Polyester is much more dangerous than Cellulose (I assume you're talking about Nitro Cellulose or the modern acrylic substitutes). A friend of mine ended up in hospital coughing up blood after respraying his VW in Polyester in his garage with just a paper mask. It doesn't cost much to take a few precautions .
 22.
I'm no expert but... I gigged a Marshall Superbass head and even through a sealed Marshall 4x12 bass cab it was shy in the bottom end at gigging volume with a loud band. Very entertaining in most other respects though. Would it be an option to upgrade the 4x10 drivers to something more efficient? It'd keep your rig to a manageable size at least.
It's very similar to the Superbass, and I've heard quite a few owners of the guitar version change the drivers - I'm not so sure it'll give me much extra low end because of the open back to the cabinet, although at least I won't be shy of turning the bass up a bit.
I wonder if you could make a panel to seal the back with some tuned ports in it? The problem with open-backed cabs is the sound cancels out below a certain frequency so in addition to the speaker's 12dB/octave roll-off below resonance (probably about 60Hz) you get another 6dB/octave on top of that, in this case probably starting at about 200Hz. Seal the back and add some ports and you'll get a ton more bottom end. However, how is the amp cooled? Alex
Yeah, that's an interesting idea as there is a ridge around the back of the cabinet which could be used to attach an entire panel, or even a box like extension. Unfortunately, the valves rely on the open air for cooling. Perhaps the movement of the air and the porting could provide a kind of cooling air pump effect?
 23.
honestly not trying to sound like a complete a**, but: it seems this amp really best suits a certain style of music, and that perhaps that isn't the same style that you play? So the most efficient solution may be to get something else, in this case. Failing that, I would agree with Mr Foxen and say that the best bet is to bypass the internal drivers and just use external cabs -- however i'd imagine that would leave an awful lot to carry round.
That's OK, I don't know what an 'a**' is.... It's a good sounding amp and suits me fine for most situations. It doesn't even weigh that much considering it's a 4x10 valve amp! I did consider trading it in for a Markbass a while ago, but thought I'd ask this question first.
 24. No it's a proper bass amp. It's like Marshall's version of the Fender Bassman but bigger and louder. It was from a range called 'club & country', pretty short lived and quite expensive in the late seventies / early eighties but actually rather good - except for the lack of real rumble. It's probably the perfect amp for 'tic tac' bass lines on a Bass VI.
