1. We're all very patient on here don't you know What's the spec then?
 2.
Here's a closer peek.
Very nice pickup, and bass! I suspect it sounds fairly dark, how about some sound samples???
 3. I love that pickup - is it a wide coiled single just like a Jazzmaster but with 4 poles?
 4.
I saw Rob, Jon's assistant, spend a total of 3 days sanding the rear of a headstock.
!!! I'm all for task masters but 3 days to sand the back of a headstock? Maybe he was licking it smooth
 5. Yeah I think there are quite a few differences between a SR4 and SR5 - pickup, contouring, circuit etc. - the SR5 isn't just a SR4 with an extra string. I would still consider going for a European Spector if that's what's floating your boat.
 6. A MusicMan Stingray is a rite of passage for a serious bass player but, I've had 2 and moved on from them. They're not the be-all and end-all of basses and the carved, thru necked Spectors are very nice.
 7.
Didn't Duane Eddy use a baritone guitar? Technically, you would think of it more as a guitar variant than a bass variant. All the chord shapes and scale patterns would be the same, for example.
Yes he did, well a six string bass (E to E) and Glen Campbell used one for the solo on Wichita Lineman too.
 8.
Ritters come with a gold plated one from the Great Wall of China A
9.
I had a roll of lead left from previous building work. Just rolled it tightly. Fitted a hardwood plug to cover, and to take he strap button screw. Wish I'd have thought about a brick before I started
Yeah apparently Schaller and Gotoh are developing their own bricks on strings to fill this much neglected niche. Needless to say Hipshot is developing an ultralite version
 10. I used to use mylar at work. It was quite tough but also relatively soft compared to an epoxy coating - it's basically polyester, like the finishes on post CBS Fenders and a bunch of other (often cheaper) guitars from the 70's, 80's and 90's. If it's only going to cost you a few quid it's got to be worth a try.
 11. Just got back. I stayed to see who won the Stingray - it wasn't me but I did get to see the Doug Wimbish masterclass which was basically not much like a masterclass and allot like a short gig. It was very good indeed. I liked just about everything there although l gave up trying anything plugged into an amp because I just couldn't hear myself play. The Ernie Ball stand had the right idea with the headphone amps. I tried a Dingwalls fanned fret bass for the first time too (£5,500 and taken off me very quickly by the guy on the stand) Oh, didn't see anyone there other than Daf but that's 'cos I know him - I probably walked past a hundred BC'ers.

 13.
And I am bloody proud of it, like I said a close look shows the light wood filler filling this chips the frets left but it has no effect on playability and most importantly the Washburn is now on pride of place on the stand and being played more than it has for years.
That's what it's all about, proudly carrying the scars of an entire career, or at the very least a few years of noodling Nice to see it's evolved into something that gets you using it again.
 14. Nice Jazz-esque body shape. I like the idea of a solid purpleheart neck too. I'll watch this one with some interest.
 15.
Hi all, I am currently defretting a 'practice' neck which oldslapper was kind enough to send for the cost of postage in preparation for having a go on my aerodyne jazz. All is going well so far, I've got the frets out, the nut off, the maple veneer in and the board sanded smooth with a 9.5" radius block (re-radiused from flatter, be 'interesting' to see how this plays!). Next I'll try epoxying it. But. For the aerodyne just to complicate things I quite fancy adding cream binding to match that on the body. I have a Dremel but no proper router, and looking at the various binding router bits on Stewmac, cutting accurate binding channels on an already shaped neck looks far from straightforward and would involve a high outlay on tools that I don't really want to make right now. So, would a purfling cutter and chisel be able to do this to a decent standard without a year's (and 50 necks' worth) of practice? I could have a try on the practice neck but obviously don't want to if it'd be a total waste of time. Alternatively, any of the BC luthiers fancy PM-ing me a quote for doing this? I know having a fretted neck bound is an expensive job with multiple stages but I'm hoping that since I'd just want the channel cut on an already defretted neck it might be more affordable. Thanks!
Do you have a router????
 16. There are some good books on building and modding valve amps (if valves are where you want to go 'Inside Tube Amps by Dan Torres lays quite allot of valve lore out without too much maths or oscilloscopes) but what I meant in my previous post was, danger issues asides, building a really good high powered valve bass amp will cost you more than buying a really good one. But to do it just for fun, I'd do it if I had the time and spare cash just to say I'd done it Transistors, digital power stages, switched supplies, programmable eq's on the other hand...............
 17.
Some of these amps do actually have a difficulty level recommended for first-time builders, from what I can tell, most amp builders start with valves as they are so much more simple to build, but I doubt even first-time builders are usually strangers to a soldering iron (and I was assuming nor was the OP) I guess you'd be foolish to try and build one without fully understanding the dangers and how to deal with them, so yeah, up to you, I'd do it no problem, but i'm quite confident (or "reckless" ) They are not dangerous until you plug them in, and you can test them with a multi-meter for dangerous shorts and you could always get you local knowlegeable valve-amp geek to check your first lot of work (find them in real ale pubs with Tuesday night blues jam sessions ).
I've heard allot of good things about the Ampmaker kits although beware, most mains electronics and especially valve amps are also very dangerous after you've unplugged them, what with high voltage capacitors et al. If you want to build an amp just for fun then I'd go for one of the Ampmaker kits but if you want to build a 300 Watt dedicated valve bass head you'll find it's a fair bit cheaper, easier and rather less dangerous to just go out and buy a new SVT. Edit; Basschat's umph has been working on some bass amp stuff for a while now, maybe he can point you in the right direction
 18.
fair comment! However I never want o have to avoid certain positions on my fingerboard live again to avoid a nasty buzz coming through the P.A. "Once bitten..."
Ha! That's how I got into coated boards in the first place, although if I had a Wal I'd probably be too scared to use it....
 19.
Yeah, but don't forget Jaco coated his fingerboard with an epoxy resin. I ripped up the ebony fingerbaord on my Wal with rounds and subsequently needed a layer taken off on 3 occasions, until there wasn't enough to take any more off. if yu are a light player, it will buy you some time. I have Daddario Chromes on my fretless. smooth and bright.
Yeah, epoxy helps but - asides from changing the sound/feel for many players - IMO it's important to arrive at the sound and feel you want regardless of whether it wears out the fingerboard faster or not. In other words I'd rather wear my board out than have it sit there unplayed because I don't like the sound. I earn my living (in part) by epoxying fingerboards but I don't believe it's for everybody, just like using flats on a fretless. I could understand with the values attached to Wal basses, you'd be worried about wearing ruts in your very expensive fingerboard but I'd think a Rockbass would be the perfect instrument to experiment on, especially as bluejay will hopefully be getting some kind of discount
 20.
Oh, don't forget to take the roundwounds off. So much damage to the fingerboard is possible with them.
!!!! Good job Jaco Pastorius didn't swap his rounds for something less abrasive. Where would modern Jazz bass playing be???? I agree on the gift voucher angle though - I wouldn't think one graze means the entire bass has been abused. Just push for decent compensation - even German companies will try to fob you off.
 21. I picked up my 'behind the sofa' Squier Bronco for about seventy quid. The pickup's a bit ropey but there are a couple of aftermarkets out there and you could have a really nice sounding, well set up Mustang shaped bass for less than 150 notes. You can even get hold of the chrome control plate, 4 saddle bridge and all the other Mustang bits if you really have to but nobody else will notice (except for anoraks like me on Basschat).
 22. +1 on that. One lump of rock maple is very much like another. Attention to detail like fret seating, rolled edges and finish will affect the playability but not the actual sound unless it's so bad the neck is full of buzzes.
 23.
I saw this linked from Talkbass - a luthier in France is working on a Bisonic based pickup. There are some design drawings in his gallery. They're a bit slimmer than the Darkstars, as the poles adjust by being threaded into a baseplate - no extra adjusting screws. http://www.daguetguitars.com/index.php
looks like a standard guitar humbucker size and shape. I still prefer the look of the real BiSonics but it's better than no BiSonics at all I think it was Daguet who did a really nice Phil Lesh-ish EB-2 with 2 DarkStars which looked very cool indeed. 'I want' didn't even begin to cover it...
 24.
The EB-0 and Melody Maker are probably the least regarded of the vintage Gibson basses - the short scale and single neck mudbucker mean you get plenty of low-end thump, and.....er, that's it. Afficionados love them though. The EB-3 models, which are essentially the same but with a bridge min-humbucker, are far more versatile and desirable (thanks mainly to the Jack Bruce / Andy Fraser connection) - a nice mid '60's EB-3 can easily fetch £2K+. Hence the high numbers of "modded" EB-0's. Tonewoods (solid mahogany) and build quality are usually top notch on most '60's Gibsons, EB-0's included. Seems the whole vintage market is rather depressed at the moment, and it's the least desirable models that take the biggest hit; bargains to be had right now if you've got the dosh.
All that. The fact that the market's depressed, (depressing prices yet I still can't afford one) makes me depressed.....
 25. 5/8 of an inch deep, otherwise known as 16mm if you're a bit on the Metric side.
