  1. Interesting. The drums and bass kind of 'made more sense' when he was playing. I thinks that means he's a good fit!
  2. she's definately very cool. I heard a great Radio four interview with her - she said that she loves guitar best and bass is her professional instrument. And she said the same in the first minute of this interview. Well, no-one's perfect!
  3. when Kim Deal didn't join the Pixies reunion they got a new bass player, also called Kim, who was not even Kim Gordon. It was Kim Shattuck of the Muffs... although she had to switch from guitar. According to Frank Black, the Pixies had to let Kim S go in the end.... "She is an extrovert and we are all introverts" Kim Shattuck sadly departed a year or so ago... RIP.
  4. So there are a lot of references to the bone player. Can we infer that in jazz circles the trombone player is the butt of jokes, a bit like drummer in rock music?
  5. I play ukulele, but I guess that’s not really unusual! But staying within strings I always fancy those exotic sounding things like an oud. But really I should go outside the comfort zone and play something you blow into.
  6. Is the green one the one he bought from Hugh Cornwall upon joining the band... I think he didn’t have or play bass until then.?
  7. I think some ofStiff Little Fingers early lyrics were written by the manager - Gordon Ogilvie if I remember correctly. I think he had a background in journalism.
  8. Yes, forgot that one! I think Nicky and Ritchie originally wrote the lyrics together, plus the band manifesto(!) etc. Due to the well known sad circumstances Nicky does it alone now.
  9. Using Electronic tuner - $15. How about playing the whole set with a tuner clamped to the headstock?
  10. I recently saw Black Sabbath doc which said (I think it's well known) that whilst Iommi wrote most of the riffs for Sabbath, Geezer Butler wrote the majority of the words. I think that bassist Bob Daisley wrote the lyrics for the Ozzy albums he was on too. So are there any other notable cases where the bassist (or drummer, guitartist) etc. writes the lyrics for a band, but they are not the singer or the music writer? ( so not Phil Lynott - he was the singer, not Nikki Sixx - he wrote the tumes too) A couple of non-bassists spring to mind........
  11. So you volunteered to sing a few songs to make a vacuum for a clever bass-line? Or did I miss your point ?
  12. I'm just thankful that we have the variety we have... simple basslines, complex bass lines and everything inbetween. Sometimes it's right to "serve the song", but I'm glad not everyone takes that approach all the time. Bass is part of the song, can lead the song, can define the song.
  13. Writing note names above the ledger line notes. No fine for writing TAB above the ledger line then?
  14. Don't forget subsection B: close-up on bassist during the guitar solo .
  15. One one hand, you are right. On the other hand - let's not let the facts (or indeed what was asked for in the original post) get in the way of a good thread.
  16. Neck from a different box guitar. My dad provided the neck wood and co-built the guitar with me.
  17. Next up : Homemade cigar box guitar. Picture of a cigar box basically!
  18. My main ones are painted, and the unpainted stuff is nothing to write home (or post to a forum) about... but I'm posting them anyway. I don't know what any of the wood is! First up: Washburn acoustic
  19. Very nice.... can we see the whole instrument at some point? Perhaps after this one has been declared the overall winner😉.
  20. I wouldn't quite say you were mad, but probably worth keeping an eye on it 😉. Seriously though, great idea!
  21. I dip into Late Junction every now and then... thanks for the reminder - I'm overdue a dip. Now downloading a recent edition onto my BBC sounds app.
  22. There are a few different definitions of what dance music means.... but for the purpose of this thread I'm going for the the genre that happened after disco in the Eighties... house and rave etc. And as I'm not an expert in that area I'll be choosing from the big chart hits. The top three for me have been mentioned already Back to life Ride on time Groove is in the heart.
