  2. Played debut (not counting a few weeks ago at a very small session) Clawhammer banjo (Cornbread and Butterbeans) at my monthly folk/acoustic session last week ... went down well and someone suggested doing another one next time. So I'm working on "Georgie Buck", alternating between instrumental and vocal sections. Bad timing with the acrylic nail.... it had grown out too much, and fell off during my performance! didn't matter though as it had protected the natural nail enough to play with real nail. New acrylic has been glued on since..
  3. I don't get why the OP is quoting himself and asking himself what he means? (I guess just a language thing, but it did look strange at first sight!)
  4. I wouldn't worry about the band wanting you to stick to one bass... it's probably doesn't make enough difference in sound to compensate for the disruption of flow in the set. Just pick the best bass and stick with it. I can't advise which is the best bass, but the BC collective will advise you ( seems like they are saying Jazz).
  5. That amphitheatre is fantastic!
  6. I'm liking the bass players name too:
  7. Dave Olney and the X-Rays
  8. If anyone wants to see the original, it’s on BBC2 tonight at 10.40
  9. Here's my entry for the May comp. In the picture I saw the light.... so theme of song is 'seeing the light'. Musically it is a nod to the various spiritually-tinged songs on the Velvet Underground's 3rd album. Technical details: DAW: Studio One; Drums: Programmed piano-roll with a 'Led-Zep' kit, plus live shaker, tambourine and wooden-scrapey -thing; Bass: Vantage Avenger; Guitars: Squire Tele and Vox Standard 25; Keys: Studio one piano and organ; Vocals via Behringer condenser mic. Lyrics in spoiler:
  10. For me, that is the ultimate 'And The' band name!
  11. Johnny Kid and the Pirates
  12. Spinal tap story, based around alternative band The Fall. The Fall's eccentric leader Mark E Smith used to play Spinal Tap movie a lot on the tour bus, which meant the rest of the band were forced to watch. One night bassist Steve Hanley played the main riff to a Spinal Tap song as a soundcheck. Mark E Smith said something like "That's good, save it for the next album". Steve assumed he was joking, and really recognised the riff as Spinal Tap. However, come the time to make the album Smith insisted that the riff was used as the basis of a song to the consternation of the rest of the band. (Spinal Tap "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" > The Fall "Athlete Cured")
  13. So good that Johnny Thunders used it too!
  14. frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
  15. Ignore - comment deleted. I shouldn't try to read the rules before waking up!
  16. Last chance I guess.
  17. It’s realistic really given all the heritage acts etc around nowadays.
  18. My main love for 'world fusion' is Goat, who are using a base of psyche-rock rather than dance music. Might have to check out those you mentioned... I'm aware of all the names but maybe never really listened to them properly. Put some suggestions here by all means.
  19. I see that the drummer is daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins.
  20. Never heard of them before. I liked the way that sounded. I like the way it looked. Not sure I can forgive the name 'Shpongle' though !
  21. Get fed a bit of Lizzo via 6music..... good stuff! Yes, great bass, but the overall track is very good too.
  22. Just heard this via a FB recommendation: Really like their sound.
  23. The Band stared out as backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, then Bob Dylan. They did OK for themselves In fact, they must be the ultimate example..... they are actually just called "The Band" after all!
