  1. I can well believe it. MES was a MESS later in life and lost some quality control and lyrical flair. He was always a tw@t. Oh, and the alcohol 🙁
  2. Think more about your individual and collective strengths and weaknesses rather than wether the original had two guitars. If the singer is a modest guitarist maybe pick some simple or bass-led songs?
  3. Whilst in the real world you change between pick and fingers precisely to avoid a consistent tone, I’ll go with your question. If I could do both equally well but had to stick to one it would be pick without doubt. Suits the genres I’m likely to play…. Punk, post-punk etc.
  4. Has an individual’s contribution to band ever been so under-rated than Andy’s?
  5. I think it’s the other way round. The better lyricist you are, the less you need singing skills. Disclaimer, I’m a massive fan of Mark E Smith an The Fall. To make things worse I think Mark has a good voice😐
  6. In my opinion jam sessions don’t gel with every genre of music. For a riff/song based genre such as metal no real point unless it’s covers of well known classics.
  7. Nothing till early November. then I have clash.... Due to Covid rescheduling I have Chubby and the Gang (St Albans) and The Nightingales plus Pete Astor (Bedford) on the same night. I'll just keep both on the off-chance that if one is moved. Nightingales get priority.
  8. I joined/formed (one of each) two bands via JMB. Both with decent players/ people. Had a few dead ends but not with any real time wasters. My rule is don’t answer any that don’t give any basic info about what they are or what they want.
  9. Thanks to the people who vote even though not entering a song!
  10. I was bought up on the idea The Grateful Dead were as bad as music can get, and was just one endless noodle. I guess many of the punk generation can say the same. They don't seem to get any radio play or anything, so I never actually heard them for many years. So when I did finally (and accidentally) hear a bit it wasn't as bad as I expected. Sounded a bit Americana if I remebr correctly. Not really heard them since, but one of these days I might follow up one of the suggestions.
  11. Indeed. Such punters can help make the gig.
  12. I saw Scritti Pollitti doing a mini-support (about 4 songs) slot for the Raincoats before lockdown. It was just two of them plus a laptop (but then the other support act - Big Joannie- did an acoustic version). Are they with a full line up now?
  13. Loving the new A&TS album! Are tickets for Nov 24th even available? Wouldn't mind it myself.
  14. "Yard Act" at Bedford Esquires. What do you mean 'never heard of them"?! Will use the last of my petrol, and even then have to make part of the journey by train.
  15. The Dancing in the Street vid was featured in full as a cutaway in Family Guy. Anyone remember the comment afterwards? I remember “that happened” not sure what else.
  16. So that is a special “lead vocalist” monitor. What it really needs is a feature to pump adoring crowd comments to them!
  17. I wonder if, ahem, ‘little Jim’ made an appearance?
  18. I’d like to say ‘unbelievable’ but it’s all too likely.
  19. As Pick player who can do one finger if really needed, even thinking of that makes my head spin.
  20. On my six-string with whammy bar (I won't say tremolo) I tune it twice or maybe more. By the time I get to the last string the tremolo (OK I said it) spring has moved and the first strings are slightly out, so needs a second pass though. Or given all the stuff said above maybe it doesn't really! Broken string puts it way out if you try to carry on with 5 strings.
  21. I've heard worse from official band members. And seen less stage presence too.
