This got me confused at work too. I work in a European team and we discussing who would be out on the 24th for the public holiday which is happening in some countries. I remembered your post and (without checking any further, such is the trust I have 😃) started to plan cover etc. Luckily I didn’t get very far before I realised!

Here goes! There are lots of phrases involving pigeons - like pigeon toed and pigeon chest, stool pigeon etc.... and my first notion was a Booker-T style instrumental called "Pigeon Peas". However the riffage went in a different (Crampy) direction so I ended up using all the phrases into a full set of lyrics. Same gear as usual: Studio one DAW, Studio One drum set, Vantage bass, Squier Tele guitar, SM38 mic. Lyrics:

I never think like that.... they do their thing , I do mine. I may steal something from them or “channel” them, but never aspire to be them. If I don’t like it I can avoid doing anything like it future.

I think Sleaford Mods are great too. Vocally and instrumentally. I’m Ok with their methodology on record, but afraid I’m not really sure about the whole “laptop and mic” thing live. To my ears it would sound good with a live bass ( with processing, not a straight bass sound) . Thoughts?

The Fall - "Paintwork" I think it's some kind of home recording, especially as it has a crude drum machine instead of drummer Karl Burns. At about 38 seconds Mark E Smith accidentally taped over some of the tracks for a few seconds. Not sure if the voices heard are what he accidentally taped, or added afterwards to fill the silence.

The Cars - "Best Friends Girl" After the into/verse and into the first chorus - the drummer misses the first snare hit. About 48 seconds or so. I think it's on record (excuse the pun) as being a mistake rather than deliberate.

The Stranglers - "Do Ya Wanna - Death and Night and Blood (Yukio)" I read an interview with drummer Jet Black, who says a fan asked him about a mistake on this. Jet's response was along the lines of "Well spotted, I thought I'd got away with that." It's basically two songs medleyed together. When It switches from the first song into the second song (about 2min30s) the drums are kind of 'out of phase' with rest of the band, but goes back into phase (snare on the 2 and 4) at about 3mins. Given the extremely off kilter drum pattern in the first half of the song, it would be reasonable to assume that the 'mistake' was deliberate. So hats off to Jet for owning up!

@lowdown I did get that error, but I think maximising didn't help. I'll try again later after work.

I can't stand the rap that is of the above type. However, as others have said, that is just one part of the rap genre (unfortunately the best known)…… the remainder contains a whole lot of decent stuff - to my ears.

I'd go for that on looks. Outside my normal price range.... it would have to play/sound pretty good too to even get a look in!

Another chance to share this then:

I can imagine a situation where you're a songwriter/Guitarist(or bassist) in a band and can sing the songs just how you like it.....…. except for the odd pitching issue. One option - get a singer into the band and tell them they won't write songs and have to sing it your way - a tough ask. And then watch them get all the limelight. Or sing it yourself and wack on a little bit of autotune. I know which I'd go for.

Just take this opportunity to mention another Portishead off-shoot..... Geoff Barrows' other band: Beak. I guess Krautrock is the nearest reference point.

I get what you are saying. It often annoys me when people say they listen to "anything". It's ambiguous... could mean they are a music enthusiast with a thirst for different styles, or it could mean they are indifferent to music. It's also not very informative............ tell me a couple of core genres to give the 'centre' and a few more to tell me the breadth. On the other hand if you listen exclusively to grindcore then I'm happy with that too. I sometimes have to hire a car for work, and the person on the desk may ask what model car I want. I reply "anything", because I don't care about cars.

Eclectic but selective. I like stuff from a wide variety of genres, but I'm picky - only like the bits which work for me! I've got more and more open as I get older , including open to more extremity. When I first started listening to music I was passionate, but not open. Now the reason I don't get into more genres is purely practical - I don't have the time or energy to follow up every lead! Get to the back of the queue Mongolian throat music😀.

If you use charts to learn/rehearse the song then gradually wean yourself off the chart before that song goes to gig. I start with a 'full' chart... then a summarized version, then no chart at all. I don't take any charts on stage, but I do allow a few 'cheats' on the set list.... the left half of the A4 for the song titles, the right half for some notes on two or three songs which I have a mental block on.

Or glare at the guitarist ........as if it was their mistake!

BBC four Sunday Night 9pm: a new Delia Derbyshire doc. In case anyone doesn't know Delia, she is an early pioneer of electronic music... best know for her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and creating the ground-breaking Dr Who theme music. Armed only with a tapes and razor blades.....no samplers in thoose days!
