Sky Arts and other music related programmes
Nail Soup replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
Great. I've only recently woke up to having Sky arts on Freeview - via a Basschat thread. Good idea of yours to include the repeat time too! -
Sky Arts: King Rocker (Stewart Lee on Robert Lloyd/Nightingales)

Exactly my thoughts on films - glad I'm not the only one. Of course there are some good ones! -
Sky Arts: King Rocker (Stewart Lee on Robert Lloyd/Nightingales)

I guess they're not for everyone! -
It's not really something that applies to me. I'm more "find one that will do and stick with it"!

We have forgotten about wired connections. In fact nearly all people I know use the term "WIFI" synonymously with "the internet" I'm not sure I'm in a position to run a wire to where I need it, but you've got me thinking!

Robert Lloyd is is not all that well known, but was singer in Birmingham punk band the Prefects, post-punk band the Nightingales and later solo career. Stewart Lee has made this documentary. I think it was intended for a cinema release, but now it's straight to TV. Tonight at 9pm. Worth watching by all accounts even if you are not a fan. I have ticket for The Nightingales.... just waiting for the Covid-delayed show to happen.

Same - I don’t watch enough TV to justify subscription.

Thanks for the info........ recorder set (I won't be able to watch this at peak viewing time!)

I record quite a lot, normally in a solo style, writing, singing, playing and recording - as many on here do. I find it really hard to be objective - so in a way the recording does lie to me: On one listen I'll think "Wow, this is brilliant" and another listen I'll think "God, this is rubbish" I guess the the truth is somewhere between.... but where?

The bloke running the fake Sham 69 (Tim Vee) seems like a real twunt. I respect that you don't share the details of a private conversation, otherwise I'd love to hear those comments!

The trouble with Hong Kong Garden is that you feel like learning another tune after an hour 😃.

Great tune to start out with!

Famous songs that were written on a bass guitar?
Nail Soup replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
Yes, there a lot of bass-centric songs written on Bass (or starting with a bassline) but not so many people who use the bass to write songs where the bass is not prominent. I get the impression that even bass-playing songwriters like Sting write on 6 string or piano and only pick up a bass when they take the song to the band. As previously stated, Reg Presley of the Troggs is an example: wrote on bass, even though the band had a bass player and they were not bass-centered songs. -
And I guess it earned that ultimate guitar accolade - to be banned from guitar shops!
-
Yep - regardless of your music genre, if you learned 6 string you learned Hilton's HOTRS.

I remember listening to an edition of Desert Island Discs, where the 'castaway' mentioned that the producer had given them the brief something like: "Don't think of your 8 best records, think of 8 most important moments/things in your life and then nominate the record associated with them" First I was surprised that such a comment was not edited out, as it reveals the inner workings of the show. I also thought: What do you mean? Finding my best 8 records was the 8 most important moments/things in my life!

Help me to Understand the working of Variable Resistor
Nail Soup replied to Matt brown's topic in General Discussion
Sorry if it's egg sucking (or wrong!): One key thing about variable resistors.... two types: Logarithmic and Linear. Logarithmics increase the resistance more in the first degrees of the rotationn (or slide) than later on. Linear each degree turned increases the resistance by the same amount. Volume controls are typically log, because (as I understand it) that's how human psychoacoustics relates to the sound. Tone controls for example I think are typically linear. -
Question about tuning a bass vs 'normal' guitar?
Nail Soup replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
I think it meant playing a harmonic at the 12th fret, rather than a fretted note...... so this method is tolerant of poor intonation I would say. -

Brass Klezmer? Have you been on the Late Junction again? Seeing there have a couple brassy ones, how about this...... Don't know if saxes count as Brass. Or traffic cones. -

440hz is standard concert pitch - what most of us use. -
Question about tuning a bass vs 'normal' guitar?
Nail Soup replied to TJ1's topic in General Discussion
Standard bass tuning is same as standard guitar tuning - so it is “wrong”. is there an option to reset it to standard? -
And mumbling actors nowadays - I guess they’re going for added realism or something.. Mind you, I find that real life people mumble more the older I get!
