I'd never really heard of Rocco before... seen a few references to Tower of Power (mainly on Basschat), but never heard the music. I guess I had mentally compartmentalized them as not my bag. But just a heard a track on 6 music and thought "that a great bassline"... song was pretty good too. Looked at the digital display and..........Yes it was TOP! Nice one Rocco!

Is pitch perception a universal human phenomenon?
Nail Soup replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
That makes sense, but I guess my point is why use the term 'relative pitch"' for someone hitting the correct key/note when they have no reference point. My understanding of the term 'relative' be it in music or anything else is some kind of distance from a reference point. -

Pedant mode: on Wouldn't that be called absolute pitch (rather than relative) or something like that? Pedant mode: off -
Is pitch perception a universal human phenomenon?

Interesting response! I mentioned 'piece of music' in the original comment, and the reply was centred around 'the song'. I think that illustrates the point about being tune-centric (or not) pretty well. It's pretty unconscious. -

While I'm thinking about pitch perception, I think the extent to which we prioritise pitch against the other elements of music varies between individuals. And also between cultures. Some people listen to music and have a strong connection to the pitch and melody. Others are connected more to the rhythm and feel. It often amazes me on TV documentories when analysing a piece of music someone sits at a piano saying they used such and such a scale and don't even mention the rhythm section or guitar sounds and all the other stuff. -
A thread for Basschatters who have an interest in HIFI
Nail Soup replied to leroydiamond's topic in General Discussion
I'd like to have a HIFI, but my domestic arrangements means I don't..........I basically listen to music through non-hifi.. Radio on the TV, portable DAB radio MP3 player etc. In the 80's I worked with a couple of guys who used to talk HIFI all the time.... I never wanted to get seriously into it, buti t did inspire me to buy some entry level stuff. So one of them lent me a hi-fi mag which had an some entry level suggestions.... That was good for a few years untill I moved house 25 yerr ago now it's in the loft..... see pics (will upload in a minute) -
I think (at least part of ) the theory behind the loud music thing is that if the music is loud, then people will shout to be heard... thus pumping out more CV. In my world though music and talking at pubs are mutually exclusive. When the music is on I listen only to that. When I want to talk there shouldn't be any music.

That kind of thing would probably rule me out of a number of occupations. Don't know how people in some jobs manage to be honest.

Is pitch perception a universal human phenomenon?

Yes - as long as we are all going on green and stopping on red then we are OK. Not sure what the pitch equivalent of that is though 😕! -
On a daily basis: General Discussion, then Off Topic. Other stuff - I do look but not daily.

Our drummers normally a bit late, but we turn it into a positive by using that time to go through chords, backing voc and so on.

Happy to be wrong, but I got that from Wikipedia (ok, I know!) where it had the reference source as Katz, David (2006) People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee "Scratch" Perry, Quote: 'Perry considered that the Clash had "ruined" the song with their version, but later agreed to work with the band nonetheless' Perry is quite an eccentric character, and it's quite possible he said that and went on to love the Clash / put up a photo. There a few references to the "ruined" comment online, often followed by something like "he still put a photo up".

I'm obsessively punctual, but I would not let it get in the way of a relationship. Mrs Soup was very late to every date we had, but we still ended up together. I was in a band with a drummer who was really late all the time. But he was a good drummer and a great bloke. Drove me mad, but I probably had some habits that drove him mad. Just how some people are I'm afraid. OK, bit different when you're wasting rehearsal time I guess.

If only there was a fix for out of time clapping at actual live gigs!

But would you be letting her hear that c and d together sound tense , or teaching her that c and d sound tense? Other words natural or cultural? -
Like many on here, I make a net loss from playing music, so Covid has increased my musical bank balance. The paid work I do is for a salary, and doesn't look to be affected. I didn't get furloughed, but did have to take a couple of weeks unpaid leave. So I got off pretty lightly, am not complaining and counting myself lucky. Touch wood., obviously!

Inspired by an exchange about live UFO albums in the "What are you listening to" thread. We all know what the great live albums are....but what tricks, cheats and general shenanigans have been used to make live albums? Fake crowd noise, over dubs... tell us what you know..... both specific albums and general techniques. And any legit methods used to make live albums I guess!

To bring it back (closer) to topic............ I got chatting to a bloke at an open mike a few years ago (not where I live, it was the Portsmouth area) and he said he was the drummer in a Shadows live karaoke band. Basically there are three in the band - Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, and punters take turns to be Hank. Sounded good fun, he said there are lots of red strats to be seen! Didn't sound like they did a lot of gigs, just Shadows conventions and the like I think.

Was reminded of this one today... not a reggae artist, but this tune qualifies IMO: M.I.A. - It Takes A Muscle

That first piece reminded me of this obscure classic: Athletico Spizz 80 - Clocks Are Big -
Did your parents/family help with your musical life?
Nail Soup replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
Just thinking back... as I have already posted my parents had no knowledge to pass on, but tried really hard to support. In most ways that was great. However, when it came to gear it didn't work out so well. My dad had a habit of buying kind of sub-standard gear - bikes, cars, TV etc. We couldn't afford expensive stuff, but he always managed to get something much cheaper than we could afford 😄! Applied to musical instrument too ☹️. So although he tried, I only got some playable gear when I started buying my own! -

I like Dummy, but love the third album '3'. And I would like to again plug Geoff Barrows other band 'Beak'. Just don't call them a side project in Geoff's earshot😄!
