  1. Therein lies a big part of the problem for many of us who were not so favoured.
  2. Found this on Youtube... pretty cool..... seems like a ramshackle rehearsal but sounds (and looks) great!
  3. One particular memory I have from first year at high school was the teacher doing some kind of assessment of each pupil for suitability for the choir. It basically consisted of being pulled up in front of the music teacher (can't remember if it was in front of other pupils or not) who was sat at a piano. He said "sing the lower of these two notes" and then played two notes at the same time. I made some kind of discordant groan - I really had no idea about notes or pitch or anything. I was now in the 'not suitable for choir' group☹️.
  4. A great current (UK) exponent of the genre are Beak. Drums/Vocals is Geoff Barrow from Portishead (But Beak are not a Portishead side project!!!) Bass/Vocals Will is a member of Robert Plant's band. Plays gigs sitting down. At the front centre. The other guy doesn't have another claim to fame I think!
  5. My OP was a negative experience - but I'm hoping for some positives ones.... especially from younger bass-chatters🤞.
  6. Always tricky when you discover a band with a massive back catalogue! Sorry.......I can't recommend a starting point, although I've been aware of the band for many years. But the band is the brainchild of a guy called Nick Salmon (or something similar)who has been very successful as a contestant on the TV show Countdown
  7. I listened on BBC Sounds app.... still available for about 4 weeks 😉.
  8. Just thinking back to music lessons at school (back in the seventies when I was at 'big school' aged 11-16) I can say I learned absolutely nothing that has helped me in my musical life. All our teacher did was to stand in front of a blackboard and make us learn the different clef and key signitures on the stave and that kind of thing. Never touched an instrument, occasionaly heard (classical) music and rarely did anything practical. Thinking back I'm getting angry at how bad those lessons were. It wasn't till I left school and got my first bass that I learned anything. Essentially taught myself from books and friends. Anyone have similar experience? Or a better experience? (Note - moved this from a thread in off-topic)
  9. Looks good - thanks for the heads up! I will set the recorder for this series.
  10. You probably wouldn't catch me in the same room with either of them either! (to be fair Biffy are just not my cup of tea, and Scott is probably OK once you get past the Youtube facade)
  11. Meanwhile here's some Mungo's HiFi (and guests) - and the beat goes SKA
  12. Dave Rodigan is being interviewed by Steve Lamaq in the last hour of his show today (that will be 6 to 7 UK time) 6 Music. According to the trailer we can expect some discussion about the development of reggae etc to the current today.
  13. Unusual to see Bruce wearing a t-shirt of any kind! In my memory at least he is normally wearing more mod-ish attire with a collar.
  14. Sounds like a great opportunity, and I don't have any expertise to offer I'm afriad. But one idea does come to mind...... how about using two amps..... one as a monitor pointing to the band (maybe at the front pointing backwards) and one pointing at the audience? Would be interseting to see if any of the more experienced basschatters could comment on that.
  15. Interesting (to me anyway!) fact about Faust.... they split into two versions of the band. Both called Faust and neither claiming to be the 'real' one. As I understand it one version does the kind of 'song-based' side of the band and the other does the 'experimental/improvised' side of the band. I think we can guess which version @toneknob saw!
  16. That is not how Krautrock works!
  17. Fair enough I suppose...... if you need a fretless for one song then lines is the way to go.
  18. "On a fretless your finger only needs to be this far away from the correct position to be out of tune."
  19. Back to the music: Here's a good 'un............. Can - Mother Sky
  20. Watched my recording last night... enjoyable program, some of it was old news, but enough new stuff in there. Particularly like the contributions from 'members of the public'. However I think they could have cut the awkward meet-up scene between the 3 old schoolmates of the school where Bob played, and cut straight to the other scenes with them in! Was funny that one guy billed them as Bob Marley and the Whalers! Just shows how they weren't that well known in the UK early on!
  21. Been enjoying this on 6 Music this week................Golden Rope · Tiña From the new album "Positive Mental Health Music".... topic is covered in Golden Rope.
  22. I listened to Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra @Baloney Balderdash before bed last night... great stuff and certainly a good time of day to hear those two tracks. Will be checking out a few more of your suggestions by them.
  23. I was thinking about what example to post, then this one came up in one of my FB feeds.... so I'll go with Faust - It's a Rainy Day (Sunshine Girl):
