massive lack of decent midrange active fretless basses with lines
MattM replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
The Ray 34CA has a Jazz type 38mm nut width as opposed to the standard Ray which has a Precision type 42mm. I've had a lined 3 band EQ fretless Ray in my time and it was exceptional, however if you're particular as to what you're wanting, I'd be speaking to the man from Moffat...seriously good value for a custom bass for the figure quoted. -
Debaser - The Pixies (this was compulsory in the late 80s) Public Image - PiL. Select pickup nearest neck, roll tone all the way off, turn bass and volume up to 11...

So mine just arrived - blown away by finish and quality. Had an MIM P short term about 10 years back and this blows it out the water. Neck although wide, has extremely comfy rolled edges, love the amber neck tint and creamy body. Wow.
We should start a thread, what basses are "not" a do it all bass.....that might be easier Or not
Stingray. One trick pony. 😜

Gorgeous, I'd be tempted to stick a clear scratch plate on that just so you could see more of the finish, would work really well. And we all know how good 2EQ Rays sound...

Needed a decent price fretted bass for practice purposes, and USA SUBs are rare as hens teeth now, so have just pulled the trigger. Managed to get a mint example with a Quarter Pounder SPB3 fitted, so hopefully should sound as good as it looks/plays.

NBD: 1988 Musicman Stingray- very red, very lovely
MattM replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
Lovely. My old 88 Ray, now in the possesion of Mr Keeves of this parish, is the finest wooden bass I've ever owned. Great neck, great sound. Due to non-gigging status, unfortunately couldn't justify having that plus my XL2, the finest bass I've ever owned. Enjoy. -
Sometimes the measure of a seller is not just how good their item is but how they help out over and above. Not only did Martyn sell me a great guitar, he was great at helping resolve courier delivery slot issue my end (the couriers fault, not Martyns). Speedy, friendly communications, oh and can't stop playing the guitar....

FS: Fender Jazz fretless excellent w/hard case £250

For reluctant sale, a gorgeous sunburst MIM Fender Jazz lined fretless with hard case. Bought from the good mr zed of this parish last year, has been used for sofa-noodling purposes only, never gigged. As a consequence, is in (conservatively) excellent condition, only one small ding on body edge (pictured), few tiny scratches but otherwise fine. Comes with decent hard case, yours for £250 plus shipping. Bass is located in Scotland (between North East/Central belt as I'm between 2 locations work-wise), so could possibly work something out viewing/delivery wise for Scottish interested parties. Have tried to get decent pics from my phone, but unable to improve upon mr zeds, so hope it's OK to use these Andy? Please feel free to check my marketplace feedback as a seller over past few years. Cheers and wee dink:

I own one from same year. Similar control set up to a Jazz VVT, you can approximate a decent Jazz honky bridge tone, blending them 3:1 gives a decent Precisiony sound, full on both a great scooped slap sound, my personal fave is neck full on which is a dub monster. The sustain is to die for, I can get a fretted note or harmonic to sustain for nearly 30 seconds - Nigel Tufnell eat yer heart out. Buy one in a heartbeat, hands down the best bass I have ever owned in 30 years of playing.

Upgrading from MM Stingray SUB USA to full MM 2EQ, is it worth it?
MattM replied to Andytre's topic in Bass Guitars
I upgraded from a SUB to a badly described, photo'd and underpriced black Ray on eBay, which turned out to be a gloss-necked maple 88 which is the best wooden fretted bass I've ever owned, I got lucky. A Ray will look better, possible feel better if you like satin finish necks for later ones, but won't sound or play and better than a SUB. Your call if the extra outlay is worth it, -
Kim Deal purely for Debaser obviously, but Fur Dixon from the Cramps gets an honourable mention just for this outfit...leather hot pants, suspenders and bunny tail with a rather nice Salmon Pink 57 P... http://youtu.be/jLFpYjjQsqc

I'm kinda similar, 30 years or so, starting on a Westone Thunder, Fender P, various Rays. Having had a Berger XL2 as my only squeeze for a few months, got used to a narrower string spacing and dual pickup config. Just picked up my first Jazz fretless and loving it so far. Looks better than a P as well IMHO.
