Interesting Warwick Streamer
warwickhunt replied to jimbobothy's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I've got the fretted version of this (x2 P pups) and you need to be aware that the pup placement on this bass will have a massive effect on the tone... a warning if you like. -
I may be knocking at your door to have a skeg.

I've been waiting 20 years for Warwicks to go up in value and you can still pick up used german made NT bass for £700-£1000. That's pretty much exactly where it was back in the 90's and it really is immaterial of age/vintage. I 'personally' prefer basses from the first 10 years of production regardless of whether they are maple or cherry body / wenge or maple neck / 1 or 2 piece bridge. They have a better overall level of finish IMHO, particularly the rolled fingerboard edges. However, I appreciate that CNC production makes for consistency... though I've never noted inconsistencies in the early basses. In the meantime I may elect to start buying up all the old Streamers that I can find... again!

SOLD Zon Sonus USA 'Lightwave' 4 String Bass
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Basses For Sale
Very unlikely you'd find a Zon Sonus clip anywhere. However, there are clips of the Lightwave system with the Bass Whisperer, Ed Friedland. Bear in mind that the Lightwave basses aren't a patch on the Zon and the graphite neck adds to the tone whereas iirc the Lightwave basses he reviews are wooden necks. -
Were pub/smaller venue bands quieter in the past?
warwickhunt replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
I do think audiences in general are louder as less people go to a pub to specifically listen to the band. My father's band in the 70‘s often played to pubs in total silence as people stopped talking just to listen. They applauded solos and were there for the band. Nowadays I think more people are in the pub as a coincidence and just talk to each other with the music as background.
It may not be the main reason for altered perceptions of volume but it is a bugbear of mine. I elected to play in a 4 piece harmony 'acoustic' band (not technically acoustic at all as we all plugged into a small PA) with a cajon player rather than drummer due to my dislike of increasing volumes. Our intention was to play venues with a bit more finesse rather than a sledge hammer; often rock songs but done 'unplugged' style. Really hacked me off when we were asked to turn up because the people at the back of the room (seated around the corner) couldn't hear us for the noise of the pub! They could easily have moved further down the pub rather than sat 50m away around the corner of the L shaped room but instead we had to go from a comfortable experience for those at the band end of the pub to the point where we had 700w of active Mackie speakers cranked up so that we could be heard at the back of the room over the general chatter. -
...makes me have to turn the volume of my 500W amp to almost half...
Only problem is that 1/2 way on ANY amp has no relation/bearing as to how loud you are or how much of the 500w is in use. -

I think 'watts' are cheaper! We could easily manage with less amp power and/or speaker sensitivity but tech advances means we don't need to make do. 30 years ago I played with drummers as loud as now and I got by with 100-250w... all be it cranked 90% of the time; our 1000w (pub) PA was also always near the limit which isn't as likely these days. -

SOLD Zon Sonus USA 'Lightwave' 4 String Bass
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Basses For Sale
Yes the difference in gauge, material, construction and even how old strings are makes a difference as they would on a standard bass BUT age of strings seems to have far less impact than on a mag pup bass. I had a good friend around yesterday who is an excellent bassist and 'as you do' he was playing with my various Warwicks and discussing the differences (with particular reference to a Spector Euro comparison). I gave him the Zon to try just before he left... we were there another 20 mins just discussing the quality of tone of the Zon with comparisons to various basses such as piezo loaded Stingrays, Vigier etc. He was blown away with how natural a tone it has, it isn't alien sounding it is NOT a digitised/synth sound; it sounds like a top quality 'normal' bass but with other qualities. A further observation was that the carbon neck patently assists with the sustain and harmonics but it has an authority and depth of tone that some carbon basses don't have. I'm aware that folks might wonder why I'm selling it if it is such a superb instrument, understandable. I'm lucky enough to own a selection of great basses and I just have a 'preference' for my Warwick Streamers (particularly my 5th Anniversary bass) but that doesn't stop me wanting to try other flavours to see if I can find something I prefer more! . -
