USA EB/MM Sterling '93 Fretless (ebony) - early bass with mutes

Why demo the different characteristics of a sliding pup system and then change your right hand picking/plucking style to match? I know that the front 'mudbucker' position will likely sound dubbier but there's no need to play it thumb mute style and then slide to back pup and suddenly start playing finger parping style... in the middle, change to a different right hand finger style. Play them all the same finger style ya twonk Andy then we can hear what the difference is!

As a sufferer of back/neck/shoulder injuries, I'll add a couple of words of advice;

There is no such thing as a average weight for any model of bass (Lakkie DJ case in point; previous poster had one sub 8lb... I owned one close to 10lb).
NEVER under any circumstances accept 'the bathroom scales' as an accurate measuring device, regardless of method used with them.
When some one assures you that a bass is the 'lightest they have owned', query 'exactly' how many they have owned!
I'm not saying all Jazz style basses are likely to be heavy (I had a USA Sadowsky Jazz that was insanely light, though it was reduced in overall dimensions in comparison to a Fender Jazz) BUT it requires a fair sized piece of wood to make a Jazz bass body, so unless it is very high grade Swamp Ash I doubt it'd come in under 9lb, which is my target weight to get under for any average/light bass. Tone and playability I can't comment on as Nordstrand isn't a make I've tried as yet (though my Sado had Nordy pups in it). The price looks on the high side for a used instrument, I'd expect to pay less on here or from a non-retailer.

Anyone here playing a paulownia bodied bass?
warwickhunt replied to miles'tone's topic in General Discussion
TBH there are UK ebay sellers knocking out whole kits for less than some overseas retailers of the body only... no-brainer to have a punt on one but I'd not expect hardware and electrics to be anything worth shouting about but you pays your money! -
Me too. I'd say it is about £150 too dear, though.
Was just going to post the exact same thing!

If you suffer back/neck problems and need a light bass I'd seriously consider an Aria Sinsonidia (may be too many 'i' or 'a' in the spelling). They do literally weigh nothing and have a decent tone... probably not best suited to a 'ROCK' band but saying that I used mine once in my rock covers band and it sounded great with a few raised eyebrows... and compliments later in the evening! -
I tried getting bookings at a couple of new venues for my covers band this weekend and despite being there in person with diary to hand, I was told to contact them through FB with the band FB page/account. I asked why FB and was told it was a very quick easy reference for the venue to see what sort of band we were and if we had any kind of following (pint glasses in hands for the venue)! As it happens we have a FB page but a bit sad that the number of band friends that 'like' a band page could dictate who gets a gig... no guarantee of quality, just of lots of friends clued up re. social media.

What is the best way to ship a bass by post?
warwickhunt replied to laci's topic in General Discussion
Ultimately if you have to post any bass you should prepare for the worst and assume your package will be dropped (several times... quite violently) so a case inside of a thick cardboard box but you can make it just as protected by layers of bubble wrap. gigbag and the most important; a cycle box from Halfords (or even two if you can get them to fit inside each other)! -
I can't play fretless (yet...just another thing I want to learn) but oh my word, and I'm close.
Close so give it a blast. If you get it and want to stick to fretted, then £100 will get it fretted and you have a CS Dolphin for 'normal' Pro I money!

3 days, 3 gigs, 3 different bands... 73 songs!
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Funnily enough, a mate of mine has just posted some photo's of a gig there on farcebook, and apparently the audience were "well up for it!" The 'stage' area seems a bit small, but you should get your sylph-like figure tucked in a corner without any problem.
...but is there room for my stage diving into the mosh pit and balancing on top of the lighting rig... Oh hang on, it's a Blues gig! -

Have you heard much of a watering hole 'The Schooner' Al? Luckily, Berb and the boys in the band will make it easy on Saturday... I hope! -
I have a busy weekend ahead. Friday... 2 sets of acoustic covers (Washburn AB20) with one of my previous bands; laid back and without a drummer. Saturday... 2 sets depping for a local 'Blues/Americana' band, with some original material. Sunday... 2 sets with my regular 'Rock' covers band. All in all I need to memorise 73 songs (not to worried about that side of things) but oddly the 'Blues' covers are giving me the most jip. Punters for the Friday and Sunday gigs will happily accept my interpretations of the anticipated bass lines but the Blues Nazis will be expecting me to play the original scales/lines and to get through the gig (6 days notice to learn the sets) I may well be ad-libbing much of it. I'm not unduly worried but do those who find themselves playing in unfamiliar styles/genres ever get the feeling that they are not quite doing justice even though they are confident/competent/proficient in others styles/genres? It may be compounded by the fact that I've no rehearsal time with the Blues band and I'll be busking the beginnings and ends... and quite possibly most of the middle.
Do guitars actually sound bad through bass gear though? Guitarist in my band now plays through a Fender Bassman 1x15 combo which sounds great using pedals for distotion. I always wanted him to hook up to my Ashdown 4x8 but never got round to it.
The EQ is voiced different for guitar/bass but not to say you can't use. Bass through guitar gear will generally run out of headroom pretty quick, so a bass player using 50w of guitar gear is going to be crucified by a guitarist using same. Conversely, a guitarist will have loads of clean headroom if using bass gear 'especially' if he is using effects to get his sounds (in particular distortion).
But postage for a 30 kg. cab is something like £870 or so I hear
Really?

I agree with Muzz. Just throwing speakers into a cab (regardless of cost/type) will give a random result which might well work but for the cost and to factor out the possibility of making an expensive gamble, I'd spend the same money on a used (or poss even new) cab. Cabs are (meant to be) designed around speakers, or vice versa and unless you are going to put OEM drivers in I'd not take the chance.
