Lots of good sound scientific knowledge around to debunk the notion that 'when turned up, the dual 12" runs out of breath faster than the 15"' or that 15 goes lower than 10 etc but ultimately our ears decide what 'we' like best. Tis true and folks can't respond on the thread/post.

Dumb question from drummer re amp/cab suitability
warwickhunt replied to stoko's topic in Amps and Cabs
Check out a couple of the stickies at the top of the section on amps/cabs. In short though... if your drivers in the combo (combined) are 8 ohm and the ext cab is 8 ohm you will get max output from the amp and do no harm to any single piece. -

No 'logic' to the shocks, they are purely (ugly) aesthetic!

Each to his own I suppose but I'll not be joining the queue even if they are giving them away for free!

I think it's perfect debate material. The very fact that folks with lots of first hand knowledge of amps (with/without DI) are discussing the features of an amp, helps us and others form opinions/decisions. As you say it's no big deal but if we didn't have this banter you may as well not bother responding to any thread.
Major thread derailment guys If you want the DI version of this head then buy it. If you don't, dont.
'Derailment'... debating the merits of the features of an amp! Really?
Funnily enough I got the opposite effect recently. Turned up at recording studio with a really good idea of what I wanted to sound like.
Good point but when it relates to whether to exclude a DI on an expensive amp, why bother with ANY amp if you are recording with a half decent engineer? To whit the next point...
When there's PA support, rigs only need to be used for on stage monitoring purposes.
Absolutely, at which point the nuances of the effect that the superb power amp section of your rig has on your tone, is likely negated and will be totally lost on even the band, never mind the audience. Not picking holes and arguments, simply that I find it fascinating that we (and I am prime candidate #1) chase the elusive goal of tonal nirvana and debate the subtitles of the effect of power amps over tone or the need for a neutral cab (not me on the last one) etc but lets be honest it's 95% for our benefit rather than 'the music'. I for one know that I could do 99% of what I do with one of my student 'Stagg' basses, a cheap low brand (sufficiently loud) amp/cab/combo and a cheap DI box; actually I wouldn't need that as a live sound engineer would supply that. ...you can drop the need for a DI from my Demeter order!
Also, most FOH engineers don't want the same EQ/tone that's coming from your amp, they want a dry signal and sort the EQ themselves
Therein lies the enigma; you fine hone 'your sound' with a lush amp/cab set-up and then a hairy assed sound guy does whatever he wants to get the sound that a ) he wants to hear b ) fits the room acoustics!
-
So it's likely to be closer to the £1500 if you want the DI included; I for one can't see the point of 'excluding' a DI as you never know when circumstances will change and you may need one.
-
Is it that much more to have it included?
I have ordered one (non-DI) from the good people at Bass Gear...
Why select non-DI? Does the inclusion of the Jensen output transform DI bump the price or is the price Barrie quoted inc' this feature?

I'll subscribe and see how these pan out.
IIRC this Fishman piezo bridge is the same as the one Bolin used in their NS basses.
If that is the case, it's worth buying for the piezo tone alone! I'm so shallow but had this been any other colour I'd likely have bought it! -
Another 'Ashdown cabs sound wooly' claim.... Too many people on here jumping on the bandwagon I feel.
Not in my case; it isn't a 'claim', it is a recount of the sound that I heard when I played through all but the ABM 2x10 combo. One man's wooly is another man's deep/mellow/etc. and I personally didn't like the tone (inc' last week when I used the rehearsal rooms 8x10 instead of my Berg 2x12... but that is just MHO! After saying that you'll still note that I suggested that the OP go for the ABM over the MAG, I didn't try to persuade him to try brand XYZ, if he likes Ashdown then go for it. Oh and on the subject of users; give me free Ashdown gear and I'll use/advertise it all day long. Oh hang on, that last bit was a lie! Vive la difference.
-
It wasn't chalk and cheese tonal differences between ABM and MAG... they were both wooly! I felt that the ABMs tended to hold together more whereas the MAG sounded like it was running out of headroom and wasn't far off it's limit. Just talking about the 2 4x10s as it isn't fair to compare the 8x10, though to be fair the 2x10 was an early ABM combo it was probably the best matched of them all. From which you could deduce that you need to consider which amp you are using when comparing the cabs (hasten to add I did use the same amp with the ABM/MAG 4x10).
-
It is a subjective thing but 'theoretically' the ABM is a better cab than the MAG cab but you would need to take into account the actual cost differential. IMHO (having tried an ABM 2X10/4X10/8X10 and a MAG 4X10) if I could afford it I'd go for the ABM.

A bit of interest of late Internationally... just to clarify; yes I will ship abroad (at cost), payment would need to be other than Paypal and the condition is pretty much as it was when new. Trades will be considered but it needs to be a value that I can easily and readily get on Basschat.
