1.
Wish I was closer! Doh... someone should pick this up... nearly half the price of a new one, and without the potential wait!
Cheers. If there is no further interest in this bass then I'm going to put it into a local music shop (who will add their bit on top).
2. So the fact that this bass HAS a forearm contour gives you gip and a 4003 which is slab fronted doesn't give you grief... the very opposite to my experience of Ric's!
3. You don't need/want a Ric 4003 do you?
4. In light of the other Ric's available... reduced to £1000
5. So have you shifted that SWR yet or do you want to pay by instalments?
6.
It doesn't look refinned to me John, just paint settling - my recently departed US made Jazz was pretty much like this. I'm not an expert on Ricks, but both that I've had, had non conventional finishes. I don't know if it's part of what makes up the UV cured paint on the newer ones but on dark finishes they sempt to have a haze to the gloss - subtle but definitely present.
That's the odd thing, I've had conflicting messages from folks re. the finish on Rics including a local Ric owner who has an similar aged bass that has identical finishing (including some of his binding coming away ) and he has had his from new also. I just want to be safe/honest and if someone strips the bass and finds that it was maple/fireglo or whatever, then I haven't lead them up the garden path. Still cheap enough I think that someone will either get a gigging Ric just as it is or it'll be cheap enough to have it refinished.
7. Interesting. If I thought that the bass needed a refinish, I'd suggest it but TBH the bass will polish/buff up nicely, it's a bit flat/lacklustre where the original owner rested his thumb over the neck pup position and upper horn but otherwise is in good nick. I should mention that the biggest conundrum is that the bass has only had one previous owner and he is a friend and assures me that he hasn't refinished the bass and that the bass was a deeper/flatter/glossier black when he got it but the finish has settled like this over the years.
8. Well done to you for having the bottle to go for it; now just chalk that one down to experience and move on. I genuinely believe that even the worst rehearsals/auditions teach us something (if it doesn't you won't be on the music scene very long ) and nothing moves your playing on quicker than the thought that you don't want another of 'those' auditions again.
9.
I've got one of these, had it the best part of 10 years and it still looks new. Buy with confidence
I've probably had this for about ten years myself but it has only ever been used by me to transport the bass on two house moves in that time; I've used either an SKB hardcase or a Sadowsky semi-rigid case to transport my bass around!
10.
Do you know what colour it was before it was re-painted ?
TBH I've said that it is refinished to cover my self but a local guitar builder has seen the bass and he is stumped because there aren't any of the usual signs that it is a refinish, just that the paint appears to be following the wood grain as opposed to the usual thick gloss black that I've seen (and he has seen) on other Rics; he knows that it isn't but voiced the opinion that it looks all the world like a factory 'thin' finish. Not sure how I could establish what colour it was (indeed 'if') without scratching away at the paint and even then there is no guarantee that it wouldn't be natural! BTW the finish isn't rippled or anything, it is smooth and any 'graining' that you see is beneath the top finish. I will stress that at more than 12-18" away and unless tilted in the light, it looks like the original finish. In fact I had the bass in my house and hadn't even noticed anything until I took hi-res pics with the camera; the flash brought out this anomaly. Sorry if this isn't helping but I'm trying to be honest and if I declare it as I have, then someone can still pick up a Ric for not a lot of money (for a Ric) and then just live with it and get playing it. As a teaser I'll throw in a Warwick double gig bag for free (obviously you still get the pukka Ric case) if someone buys this bass before I sell the gigbag locally.
11. Warwick twin bass gig bag. Can hold two full scale basses. Structurally strong and good but some of the inner plastic protector panels are nicked and torn (that's what the panels are there for) from bridge screws (*cough* Fender BBOT). Collection from North East only.
12. Musicman/Ernie Ball 'Sterling' Bass Case. Excellent condition. Please be aware this will NOT fit a Stingray. Collection from North East only. £60
13. Genuine Zon case with internal moulding to fit a Sonus (not sure that it'd fit any other bass). The case is nice and solid with all catches working (Zon branded/stencilled), there are nicks and scuffs but nothing broken/terrible. Collection from North East only.
14. Tribal Planet semi-rigid bass gig bag. Excellent condition and huge pockets on the bass the largest one could easily hold one of the new 'Micro-Amps'. Straps stow away in the back and it even has an integrated stand to prop the bag up. Sorry but this will need to be collection only (North East) as I don't have the time to pack it and wait in for couriers etc. £40.
15.
Sounds like the same one!
Damn! Can't make it along this afternoon, I'd love to have caught up with Wendy (and seen the band obviously). She's a great singer/performer, say 'Hi' from John, as I say many moons ago but IIRC we named the band 'The Black Banana Band', sounded funky at the time!
16. Reduced to £1000 and pics from today added.
17. "The instrument's playability is unharmed by a few heavy abrasions." I'd have thought JG would have had a better grasp of the standard use of English language. Of course I could be wrong but the way it is written doesn't read/scan quite as fluidly as his bass lines. Not a lot of money for a quality bass and had it been a 4 string I'd have been sorely tempted.
18.
And here's my positive contribution to this thread. Pagelli:
One string too many but gorgeous. I was considering throwing a Streamer into the mix but Spector/NS imitation aside, it just wouldn't stand up to some of these works of art.
19. Trying to get the string wound onto the post due to the recess seems like harder work than it needs to be, the recess may have a metal bezel but the strings are still resting on the bezels and that's hardly conducive to a great design. I realise that if this is your only bass then you'd get used to which tuner does which string but the D/G tuners being the 'wrong' way around (in comparison to every other producer) seems again to be an ill thought out design. On that pics some of the tuners look angled back as per Warwick and others straight, it seems almost that it is a case of 'we'll put them where ever they fit' kind of design philosophy! Patently these are all just my views but looking at this as Joe Public looking to buy an instrument it would put me right off.
20.
This recent creation by Jens Ritter is absolutely stunning in the flesh. Pictures really don't do it justice. . . This close-up of the headstock gives a better idea of the amazing fingerboard:
That looks 'liquid'! Beautiful looking thing but not sure I could imagine gigging it down the Dog and Duck!
I also find these Atlansia basses very eye-catching. I'd love to try one Stunning headstock design:
That headstock is such a badly conceived design I can't understand how someone could construct a bass without correcting the issues about the tuner post recess.
21.
Bump for tomorrow's Cluny gig. On at 9pm for a 45min set including Larry Graham, Chic, Rufus and other good stuff with our new singer Wendy Saint.
Wendy Saint... why do I know that name? Without wanting to embarrass the lady in question would she be petite and in the 40+ age bracket? I'm certain that I played with a Wendy Saint in a (funk) band many moons back and I've often wondered what she would be doing now... if it be the same person!
