Musicman Sterling LE Black Onyx(What Value??)
warwickhunt replied to blunderthumbs's topic in Bass Guitars
Insurance is a funny thing because 'new for old' means that you'd need to look at the cost of one NOW which you patently can't get, so generally an insurance company would want a written quote (or two) from retailers as to the value. As to what would it cost you to buy a used one; I watched one sell on ebay for under £1000 and one sold on here for £1250 but you can guarantee if you desperately wanted to buy one, you'd not find one for love nor money... or approximately £1500! LOL Real life situation - I have a Ltd Ed Warwick of which 100 were made and it retailed in 1991 for £1800 yet to get an identical bass made from Warwick CS it'd cost me £6000. However, my insurance company will only insure it for £1800 +index linked inflation. -
Under what circumstances would you leave negative feedback??
You should really read the thread before pointing out something like this to the guy who helped write the guidelines.
I did read the whole thread and yes I read the part about money being spent but what I was pointing out (unsuccessfully it would seem) was that the other party could theoretically have equally 'claimed' that you wasted his time and money (I've no doubt he had to drive to the meet). I'm not wishing to get into a debate on your transaction, I am simply trying to highlight the fact that in ANY transaction there are two sides to a story and it is an almost impossible task to simply say that there is a black and white line between what constitutes a transaction/expenditure of money that would allow feedback and what doesn't. I have to confess that I find it slightly arrogant that just because you helped write the guidelines that you feel that they must be 'absolute' and that they can't be simply discussed or even challenged. It is (I would have thought) in the best interest of any community's interest to refine and consider such matters. Though I do know that at the end of the day it is ultimately up to the person who owns the rights to Basschat to decide and adjudicate on these guidelines and that is fine and dandy but I'd like to hope that it could be seen that open debate on such matters is healthy. Yes/No? -
One time, a guy agreed to trade a bass and was really enthusiastic, I wasn't available to do the deal so I sent the Mrs out on a long train journey to do the deal. Guy turns up and basically lays into the bass and says it's not as described even though I provided over 30 photos of the bass and an in-depth description. He took advantage of my Mrs ignorance over the actual advert and refused a trade. I left bad feedback as it cost me a lot of money and care to get the Mrs there and make it up to her. I left bad feedback, he started harassing me and sent threatening text messages to me and the Mrs. He got banned eventually and he stopped contacting me. Frightening experience, absolute loon.
Playing Devil's Advocate... Aren't you guilty here of doing exactly what you are arguing to stop? The potential buyer of your bass will no doubt have has his view of the transaction and he may well have felt that he was being pressured into buying a bass that wasn't as described (I stress I am simply offering an 'alternative' view of the transaction), folk might well think 'what kind of bloke sends his wife to do a deal with a stranger on a bass'! He could well be within his rights to leave you negative feedback as it is your word against his that the bass was as described... but a transaction wasn't concluded because he felt that the bass was misrepresented. Yes/No? PLEASE understand I am not casting aspersions, simply pointing out that it 'could' be (mis)construed that you may have misused the feedback system in the way that you are saying it shouldn't be used OR if honest open feedback had been left by both parties then individuals could make there own mind up. Oh and I have no axe to grind nor do I know or have any affinity to persons involved in any transaction! ...just saying! -
... the guys at the shop suggest shielding as the next step.
That'll be the guys that will charge you to do the shielding? I can't believe that anyone who has any understanding of guitar/bass workings is suggesting shielding your bass, the caveat being if the bass is actually perfectly OK but there is a tiny bit of humm that you are trying to tweak to get rid of. The Sterling if working correctly does not require ANY extra shielding (for starters it is humbucking)! Adding shielding is like putting an elastoplast on an amputation; if the bass is humming that bad then you need to establish what is wrong with the pup or electrics as there is something amiss that shielding will not cure.

It's a strange twist that many bands would prefer to play more varied/diverse stuff BUT when you do you get criticised for not playing <insert any song in the vein of the aforementioned banned songs>! The number of times over the last 30 years that I have spoken to other bands/musicians and the topic of covering (churning out) certain 'Classics' always comes up. However, there are certain venues where the crowd is just your average punter and they want to hear that stuff and would likely walk if they heard obscure bands or songs that they weren't familiar with. Saying that there are some bands that steadfastly refuse to trot out the same old stuff and they can and do pretty well, though they do on occasion fall flat on their face when they encounter a pub/crowd that wants the 'Classics'.

Many and diverse Warwick sounds now but I'd suppose the Streamer tone of Stuart Zender (Streamer Stage I 4 string on the early Jamiroquai albums then a Stage II 5 string) or the sound of a Thumb bass would be the classic Warwick 'Sound of Wood'... in fact I might dig the camera out and do a quick recording of my SSI.

What you describe is a classic 'earthing' issue; I have two Sterlings and no such problem with either. Are you saying your bass developed this issue THEN you had it resoldered (assuming you mean you had all of the solder joints redone) or have you had a soldering job done and now it is buzzing? One point of note; has anything else changed? i.e. are you using the same amp, leads, cab and in the same location (bad earth in certain buildings can give grief). I would also add that if you are sitting with your bass in proximity to a computer, laptop, striplight etc. you can get interference.
I would truly love to try that hellborg system with my accugrooves ! I take it you gave the massive power amp too john?
I've got a Hellborg pre and a QSC power amp and even though the QSC is rated @ 1200w (into x2 4 ohm loads) it isn't like you can tear your cones out of their baskets even with it on full... just ensure you don't fully crank the preamp output! If you are visiting family and friends (and can hide the Accugrooves in the boot from SWMBO) and want to give it a blast just let me know.
Ah, OK.
However, if a GP doesn't curtail low end on a hollow stage, that does give you an idea of the sound from the BB's.
A GRAMMA pad might help there.
I saw Roger play the other day... he uses a GRAMMA!
Best buy...in terms of everything..IMO..goes to the G Heart-Core but I suspect the OP requires a rig rather than just the amp. And I would also suggest that he is new to this amp world so needs a bit of background to the stuff on offer.
Yes, if you are talking purely 'quality' of amplification, then my Glock would take some beating for that budget BUT I've also accepted that the OP might be talking full rig and may not have masses of experience of gig rigs.

Nice to hear that another fellow bassist has overcome the 'Truss-Rod Terror'! If you are fore-armed with a bit of knowledge about what it is the truss rod does and that a little goes a long way etc. then you'd generally have to be a complete f*ckwit to break a bass/truss rod (assuming it doesn't have a fault and that is why the truss rod needs tweaking). However, it still scares the life out of most folks; I've worked with guitarists who have frankly been aghast when they have seen me tweak my truss rod at a rehearsal and they have been playing 20+ years, they still pay someone £40-£50 to fettle their guitar's truss rod! In fact I know one bassist who was going to sell his bass because the action was too high, 10 minutes with a set of allen keys and a screwdriver and he was quite frankly astonished at what could be done.

I would like to add that patently I have plugged the amp that I have for sale (as will many others ), however if the OP wanted unbiased advice re. amps for gigging and at a budget price (assuming you aren't influenced by fashion or aesthetics), I'd take a look at some of the amps from Peavey. They are bomb-proof, often stable down to 2 ohms, have a decent EQ range and tbh they sound pretty good. Gallien Krueger and Hartke also do some good quality amps that are to be had pretty cheap... but they may not be as nice as my Glock!

For your budget (assuming it is just an amp you require), you 'probably' won't get a better quality amp than the Glockenklang that I have for sale!
