I'm on hols for the next 2 weeks Kev so just give me a shout and I'll stick the kettle on... in fact I had Michael B round just yesterday and we were plonking on with a few things so I have my cabs and various amps set up in the living room! Your also welcome to take the Hellborg away if you want to try it in a band environment.
I've never seen XLRs used for speaker connections before (except for powered cabs) - is this just a Trace thing?
Glockenklang and iirc Hughes & Kettner used XLR for outputs on their amps (along with TE and others I am sure); in theory they are better than 1/4" jacks as they are more secure and have a greater contact area between the male and female parts of the pins, certainly far superior contact than 1/4" jacks. The caveat being that you need to use proper speaker cable and not just a mic lead but that is exactly the same with a 1/4" jack guitar lead.

Peavey used to do a 1U light-weight power amp that wasn't class D; added to which I think it is manufacturers of bass amps building down to a budget which is what I personally think is giving the resultant tone that I don't like with those style of switching amps, I'm 'hoping' that a dedicated power amp may not have been built down to a price and as a result might give me what I want!
how is the Hellborg?
Fabulous! I'm sitting noodling through it at the minute (coupled with my pair of DB12's and a 1200w power amp it is 'overkill' for a practice rig but... what the hell ) and it is a great bit of kit but then again so is the TF and unless I can find a very lightweight power amp (ideally 1U), the TF will remain my main amp!

Just to give you some options Kev... I have a Warwick Hellborg 1U rackmount preamp that you can borrow. I know it isn't 'exactly' what you want but it might be worth experimenting (I have a power amp to go with it but it isn't one of the uber-light ones).

I recently picked a Peavey Databass combo (400w into a Black Widow 15") for well in your budget, I leave at the rehearsal space to save me humping gear back and forth! That will EASILY compete with any drummer and you'd not need to upgrade when you were gigging... not offering to sell mine btw.
Electrically, it makes no difference if the head has one or two output sockets (unless it's stereo!) as the two sockets are wired in parallel anyway. With only a single output socket then you'll have to 'daisy-chain' the two cabs, but that's fine. All the usual rules about ohms and wattage ratings still apply.
+1 The only advantage of using x2 outputs from an amp (scenario A ) instead of daisy-chaining the 2nd cab from the 1st (scenario B ) is that in B if the lead connecting the amp to cab 1 fails then you have no signal (not good mid gig), however in A, you still have one cab functioning if the same lead were to fail to one of the cabs (you could then try and sort the lead between sets or after the gig). <edited for emoticon faff>
no, you're Warwickhunt - and like a Brazilian footballer you only have one name. It's a bit like Pele isn't Mr Pele- he's just Pele. If we did shorten it it would be to "the 'hunt" Mind you Bolinowskywickhunt would also be suitable now I think?

I dunno, Mr Warwick would be a good name too!
Better than Mr. Hunt...

Sad loss of another bassist! Surely harder to deal with when it is suicide so thoughts are with his family and friends.

Popped in to check some Laklands today....

If I were you I'd stop looking at Lakkies! -
Anyway...
It's funny how simple things like these contours affect us though; for instance I genuinely wouldn't buy a Fender style bass with those edges and it is one of the reasons that I don't get on with Rics!
-
The cut-away contours on your JV look very 'curved' but when I compare the Sados to the Buscanti and the bass you posted, the Sados are a lot closer to the JV.
-
...sadowskys have the more 'modern' looking sharper on.
Hmmm you sure? I'm looking at two Sadowsky basses right now and they are quite a 'soft' wide curve to the body edges and I'm pretty sure that the two USA basses I had were similar.

Thomastik Infeld Alloys work for me on Warwicks (oddly they don't quite sound as good on my Sterling).
I think you'd take the output of the preamp into the effects return of the Hartke which would bypass the Hartke preamp making it effectively a power amp.
What he said. It could be that the Hartke is marked for pre-amp out/power amp in but likely as not it'll be an effects loop which you'd simply get an instrument cable/patch lead (not a short speaker cable) and go from the output of the Peavey into the effects return of the Hartke; obviously then plugging your bass into the Peavey (sorry if the last bit is unnecessary but best put that in just in case you are a novice).

Why fans? Why not proper passive cooling?
I've cranked it with the fan off...which as you know you can hardly hear anyway so not entirely to blame and the amp ran VERY hot..as hot as my SWR which has heat sinks only, and it did fine. I wouldn't want to do it often, but this testifies to the sheer quality of the components and build of both, IMO... to run that hot and not miss a beat... I don't think many make amps like these anymore... sheer quality.
I was packing away after a gig when I had a sudden thought that I might have switched the fan off when I'd been doing some acoustic/home rehearsals several weeks before; checked the switch and sure enough it had been off for at least a couple of gigs. I hadn't been driving it mega hard (still a 5 piece rock covers band playing pubs and not using the PA to support backline) and it didn't seem to be 'that' hot at the end of the gig, certainly not enough to worry me! -
IMHO about £100 on ebay. Is it any good... if you like Ashdown!
