He's demanding that bidders contact him 'prior' to placing a bid (which isn't allowed under ebay T&C) in order to try and flog that system or possibly multiple identical systems; thus avoiding ebay fees. I've reported him for such but I doubt that they'll do anything... think I'll now place a bid without contacting him first!

I've gigged in the NE for a good few years and from choice I play 4 string even though I have had to detune the E string to D on many occasions and a 5 string would have helped. I've encountered plenty bassists playing 5's (6's and even the Chapman Stick), some of whom I've had to dep for and it has been a struggle to convince some bands that for 95% of their set I can easily do everything their existing bassist has played but on a 4 string. In fact I've just taken over in a band who's former bassist used 5's exclusively and I do get the feeling that they'd like me to play a 5... tough! I think the OP has been unlucky in some of his encounters BUT I will concede that there is a core of bands/musicians that still view anything other than a Fender 4 string (Jazz or Precision acceptable) as too flash/unnecessary... says the man who has turned up to auditions/rehearsals with strange Warwicks and Bolins (goodness knows what they will make of my Dingwall)!

I was registered over there as WH but I de-registered a couple of years back because of some of the idiots that were posting... re-registered as JtD when thinks looked a bit less 'troubled'!

As you say, nut width is 'generally' a specific measurement which can be found with a bit of research; however, some manufacturers change widths over time and yes that is on the exact same model. If you are generally used to a certain width and your playing style suits a particular dimension then it might be worth checking, particularly if you know that a model has varying widths depending upon age/vintage. TBH I have no problem swapping between skinny and broad necks and even the neck profile (shallow/deep) doesn't bother me. The matter of weight is altogether different. Manufacturers quote a figure for 'approximate' weight but this can vary massively. Personal experience with 40+ Warwick NT basses where I have had Streamer Stage I basses varying from 7lb 9oz (one of my present basses) to a 10lb 12oz monster, that's 3lb 3oz difference... not great fun if like me you have a recurring shoulder injury that leaves me in pain if I play a bass that is much more than 9lb (a recurring theme, judging by previous post)! I have also owned 3 Lakland JO basses and they varied between 9lb 1oz and 11lb 13oz, again that can be a big issue with anyone suffering from shoulder/back problems. Oh and I know that you can buy special 'X' straps etc as well as some basses that weigh virtually nothing but when you want the tone/feel/look of a certain bass then it pays to ask for an 'accurate' weight rather than the manufacturers guesstimate.
Depends how light "light" is. A QSC PLX is 9KG ish, Crown XLS's are half that, as are Peavey IPRs. Personally I would never use an PA amp of any decent power as a bass amp without a subsonic filter into any speaker I cared about (which would rule out the Crown & Peavey for me ...).
I've got a QSC PLX amp available if the OP is still looking for one... and it has the sub-filters! I was hoping to sell it with the Helborg but the Christmas season has wiped out everyone's funds.

Yet another positive for Peter! A pleasure to deal with (again) and as always Peter is good to his word and as accommodating as they come.

Add the Nissan X-Trail to your list (the post 08 cars have a bigger boot with the seats still upright). I can get all of my gear and some of the PA in the boot without dropping seats and 'if' you are unfortunate enough to get caught out in snow/mud etc. you have the selectable 4x4. 40mpg and nice to drive... what's not to like?
I have got 2 icolor 3 wash lights but the bulbs didnt last long and the needed their own socket as the were so powerful. They are awesome for a wash effect. I dont know where to get bulbs from for these lights now, they seem to be discontinuing these now. Thanks for the reply
I know what you mean about the current draw though we regularly play pubs where the whole band, PA and lights have to run off a single double socket under the dartboard (you know the type) and we've not had a problem. We've popped a couple of bulbs (luckily the lights continue working so not a big deal) but have sourced replacements easy enough. I'm not saying the i-colors are fantastic/the DB's but for a band wanting a cheapish, compact wash of colour they are fine... obviously didn't realise you were aiming higher than that. -
I had something very similar the other month and I was convinced I had a 12" driver on the way out (I thought that I'd heard a buzz/rattle on previous gigs but was never sure), especially when it started happening in the house when I was trying out a bass. Turns out that my speaker cable was duff and was rapidly replaced with an OBBM cable. I generally didn't think that the cable itself could give the 'sound' of a driver breaking up as I turned up the amp etc; I expect a duff cable to crackle etc. but this was acting exactly like a driver that is starting to fail and fart on certain notes as you turned up the wick (odd that it seemed worse on certain notes).

i-color lights are pretty inexpensive (deals can be had with stands and the controller) and they are very easily transported. They do a good job for pubs where you need a colour wash (they are sound to light or timed chase, so no need to have it too static). The i-color 3 is probably as good as you need the extra band of colour added by the '4' isn't probably worth the extra expense and size. -
I've found that in low/mid priced amp systems the BBE Sonic Maximisers can give a nice lift to the sound (to the point where not using it makes the amp sound shyte), whether this is due to the bass boost/general EQ or the realigning of frequencies is probably moot. When you use the BBE with better quality amps then you still get that EQ lift but I've found that I can happily live without the effect. Interestingly I have a BBE Acoustic Preamp pedal which I've used with acoustic guitars and it does a cracking job with those instruments; at times I've used it as a preamp pedal for my bass and gone straight into the PA (rehearsals are a breeze) and it stays in my gigbag for an emergency unit.
