Having spent 2hrs yesterday going down our local sledging bank on a [u]plastic bag[/u] (that wasn't a 2hr non-stop run ) I think I am qualified to say that GL is a soft lad!

A 4ohm 8x10 cab is getting the max from your amp and you'd surely be able to hear yourself, what benefit from adding another cab?

They will take your extra premium off you for increased insurance cover (even when you tell them it is a guitar) BUT you are only covered to a max of £150... regardless of whether you've paid for more! It does illustrate though that there's no reason for not slapping on lower strings as I don't think the necks are specially reinforced (no more so than a normal Warwick).

It can be done no problem, as you say you'd need to sort the nut and be sure the truss rod works OK due to the extra tension. I'd watch out though if you have a skinny pencil neck bass, the tension could be too much for the truss rod to sort out; it won't snap the neck or anything daft (unless there's something seriously wrong with the neck anyway) but you may not be able to put the right amount of relief into the neck. Failing that Warwick do a 4 string bass that is (iirc) built BEAD... is it the Darklord/Vampyre or something!

TBH if you are agonising over it then the price would be the clincher and at an inflated 70's price I'd be steering well clear but if it is bargain basement (and you can stand that weight) then go for it.

Are you likely to use the Promethian on its own in which case the 4/8ohm is immaterial, if you are adding an ext cab then you need it to be 8ohm but you are back to that dilemma of transporting the ext cab as well! I've heard the Prom 1x10 and it's a fascinating bit of kit but I seriously doubt that you'd be putting that up against 2 guitars... however, with a 1x10 Prom and an ext cab you are looking at pretty damn small. If it were me I'd be looking around to see what is available used in your locality, then see if you can blag a trial. See if you can manage with just a sensitive 1x15/2x10 or whatever config.

There must be someone off BC lives near enough to let you have a little play through a cab such as a Schroeder or a Barfaced! I have a Tech Soundsystems 2x12 cab (courtesy of LukeFRC) and it is the size of a 1x12 and is designed exactly the same as Schroeder (one speaker on an angled, recessed baffle that you can barely see) and I would happily gig that in my 6 piece rock band (twin guitars, keys etc. doing Skynyrd ZZ Top etc) HOWEVER (sound of the the 'Can of worms' being opened), I rely on my cab(s) as part of my sound (rarely put my bass through the PA so FOH is my rig sound) and I like the sound that I get from my pair of Aguilar DB12's more than the Tech cab... does that matter so much to you?

However that wouldn't put me off looking at the options available and not getting to hung up on the biggest badest cab available!

I've owned 2x10 cabs that with the same amp at the same volume/gain setting, have been demonstrably louder than some 4x10, 1x15, 2x15... not ALL 4x10, 1x15, 2x15 mind you because that is the whole point of cab efficiency they are all different! My particular example of a 2x10 was down to the efficiency of the cab (not 4ohm v 8ohm) and the design which meant that you got more out of what your amp delivered and the perceived sound was plenty loud. There's plenty science out there to confound the humble bassist trying to sort out a rig!

Those Strat style control knobs are an 80's feature aren't they? As to value; whatever it's worth to the shop! I've no doubt we'll kick figures around from £750 to £1500 but ultimately it's going to be whatever the buyer and the seller can come to an agreement on... what does the price tag say?

Reading your OP a few times it seems that weight isn't the main consideration because you've highlighted that it's the ability to get the cab into someone's car! I don't envisage that you are going to be taking whichever cab you get on public transport (not whilst carrying your bass and a MAG head), if you are then you should really be looking at one of the new uber compact combos; Promethian etc. However, if the cab choice is a reduced dimension to fit in a friends car then start looking at cabs that are small enough to use as a standalone without factoring in bringing a second cab. I'm not trying to correct your own post but simply trying to clarify some of the thinking. As others have said don't get hung up on 4/8ohm, the efficiency is probably more important and don't forget that the sound coming out of the cab will make itself heard on stage if it has a mid-bias, some mid scooped cabs sound great in isolation and in certain band settings but up against 2 guitarists the colouration/tone of the cab design may make a difference. I've now tried a couple of the Barefaced cabs and the Schroeders (or earlier Tech Soundsystem which are the same design) and they achieve a particular/different tonal slant by different means.
