1.
£100 for some electrics work and a pot?? Jeez, what luthier are you going to? lol Si
If he needs to get the U-Retro replaced/repaired and it isn't under any form of warranty that'd be your £100 right there!
2. Was it sold on here or eBay? Is there/was there damage to the packaging to indicate the bass may have taken a bash? Did the recipient sign for the delivery as being checked or unseen? No matter the answers to the above it's always an absolute bumm3r when stuff like this happens!
3. Buy something you like/love because at the end of the day it is a gamble, you may as well stick your money in Premium Bonds... not saying they are a good 'investment' but your money is still your money (less inflation) and you have a chance to win more money; in fact a chance to win a LOT more money that an investment instrument! To expand on the gamble analogy. Who knows what particular instrument will be worth more in years to come, maybe Fenders, Gibbos, Alembis, Warwicks, Squier CV's, who knows but the worst thing is that even if you buy the right instrument (i.e. vintage Fender), what happens if the body develops a split, it falls off a stand when you are admiring it, pick-ups corrode, the case you have it stored in has some epoxy resin/glue that reacts with the paint finish! Never mind investment, your initial savings are up the creek. Just out of interest, what sort of return are you hoping for over what period of time? 5% would be pretty damn good I'd say; so if you bought a £3000 bass in a years time it'd be worth £3150 so you've made £150 profit... with the potential that your investment has gone down 5% and you've lost £150. In the meantime a bloke on eBay has bought a cheap Squier/Encore bass for £70, cleaned it and put a Fender sticker on it and sold it (as a declared fake) for £140... he's had a bit of fun messing about with guitars, made £70 in a week and with little real gamble made 100% profit from his investment. Which one makes more sense if you are talking 'investment' and 'profit'? Does anybody now want to start talking other ways of investing money; stocks and shares etc. If you want to talk investment and profit rather than musical instruments for pleasure (as WoT has described his 'investment'), there are many and varied ways of making money. Buy something you want!
4.
I would like to get hold of this one as I desperately love the Maple necked ones - Although I can clarify that WHs is in fact an Alder body as is clearly a three piece and identical to mine- The Swamp Ash bodies are 2 piece and very rare and I probably own the only 2 in the UK!
Best you start saving Bob... this is 2 pieces! Not yanking your chain but I've scrutinised this for the last 15 minutes under various lights and it is centre jointed 2 piece; you can trace various wood striations to see there are no further joints other than the centre one. So I own 1 of the only 3 in the UK... bet I still can't get a trade!
5.
Haha! Yep, I bet you had loads of people turning up to the gig just wanting to hear/see your PRS bass
Oddly enough we played last night and one guy (the bassist in a local band) did ask where my PRS was! At the time I was too busy sorting out the PA for the 2nd set to realise what he'd said so didn't ask why the question!
6. The clocks go BACK not forward type bump!
7.
cheers mate. don't have the money quite yet but thanks anyway yeah, as I said, i'm more inclined to buy a second hand EBMM Stingray, the price difference for a new is quite a lot, but again, I would get to choose exactly what I want, i'm confused now ...i reckon it's better if i save around £800 and then just start the hunt for a used one with the specs I want. will be a difficult task though
If Maple hadn't been such a no-no you'd have had about £100 change out of your £800 budget with this one!
8. Soz! Just checked, it is a 5yr old 3 band EQ maple fingerboard Ray!
9. I know someone looking to buy a bass off me (PRS) who wanted to trade a USA Ray in black (will need to check on fingerboard), if the price is right would it be any good for you? If you are serious about getting a Ray then this is a genuine offer but I'd need to be sure for all of us as I don't want to be left with a Ray that I'll not want! To answer your original question though, I'd stick out to get the genuine article because chances are you'll always be thinking "What if!".
10.
Ohh and another question, going for a traditional 70's style I got a neck pickup ashtray cover. I assumed I would only need to drill through the scratchplate to attach it but the screws provided would actually go into the body slightly, is this normal?
Yep, unfortunately if you want to attach it they need to bite into the wood... you sure you need it on there and also sure it won't just get in the way?
11. Had something similar a couple weeks back; bought a Sterling on eBay via 'Best Offer' (offer obviously vetoed and accepted by the seller), paid immediately with paypal and asked the guy if he would use my work address for delivery... tumbleweed, nada, nothing, zilch! This went on for a week and I'd asked him several times that if he had sent it already that was fine but could he let me know when it was dispatched as I'd need to arrange with the family to keep a particular watching eye for couriers (amazing how many can't find the front door). Then out of the blue a refund from paypal and no explanation. I neg'd him and left it at that. I'd offer the same advice to you mate, no point busting a blood vessel over it.
12.
Hi, I just bought an Ashdown Superfly head on eBay and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on which cab(s) to pair it with. It's the model with two 250W into 4 ohm outputs. I've already got an 8 ohm 200W 2x10 Laney cab and was thinking of getting another cheap 2x10 or 1x15 cab to run in parallel. I was thinking along the lines of an Ampeg SVT210AV or an Ashdown MAG210T which are both 200W/8 ohm. Would running two of these cabs in parallel cause an issue with the fact they can only handle 200W each? Cheers.
Don't give a second thought to the stats quoted for the cabs. 250w into 200w cabs is not a problem, just be sure to use your ears and listen for them complaining and be sure not to distort your amp output. As for what to match with your existing cab... get another identical one! That is unless you want to start going down the route of getting a pair of 4 ohm cabs in which case if you are on a tight budget I'd get a pair of 2x10 Peavey TX cabs (they are generally 4 ohm cabs).
13. When did this happen Kev? Will speak later bout respective gigs.
14. Ask yourself; can you sell it and then buy a bass 'as good' that will also give you some change/pocket-money?
15. One good amp - Thunderfunk 550 Two good cabs - Aguilar DB12s I'd love to say that I use my two cabs as a modular system with one cab for rehearsals and small gigs, with the other cab added for larger gigs... but I'd be a liar as I use 2 cabs for EVERYTHING! However to answer the OP. Can I ask what the point is of two (or more) different amp/cab combinations which you use for different sessions? If you reason it out then you'll end up rehearsing with one 'sound' and end up gigging with a different one! BTW this isn't a criticism as I've been down the route of having gear left at rehearsal rooms and another rig for gigs etc. but it doesn't make any sense when you reason it through. As it happens I've gone down the route of considering what single cab solution I could have that would sound as good as my present 2 cab rig but yet still retain portability. Then I'd have one amp + one cab!
16. Mahoosive variation in the cases available and some are even badged/named similar yet are totally different in construction (from gloified cardboard boxes 'yours, to full flightcase trim) a 94 Thumb wouldn't have come in that case though; previous owner probably thought it better than a flimsy gigbag.
17.
... it's a good price.
What is the price? I see no price!
18. If you want one, it needs to be top notch and you want it NOW, then I'd get one ordered (to your requirements) from Dave (OBBM). However, if you've got time to gather the cables, connectors soldering kit etc and do your own, then that can be satisfying; though the initial outlay is expensive. Alternatively watch on here or eBay for folks selling 'as new' (don't buy really old cast-offs from other people, it's a false economy) quality cables such as the likes of Spectraflex.
19.
Ah, that explains it: I was wondering what bass you were holding in the Stateside Preachers poster - I could tell it wasn't a W or a Zon!
For a second there you had me wondering how the heck someone from Wales had seen one of my band's posters advertising a gig in the North east of England (didn't think that it could be via friends in Talgarth, Wales)... then I remembered I'd used it on a thread on BC! However that does leave me with a dilemma; if I trade the bass will people viewing the poster expect me to be playing a PRS?
20.
Out of interest was this the one in the Bass Centre a few years ago, used to be Rhino Edwards (Status Quo's)?
I've no idea mate, it'd be nice if it had some 'Pro' provenance; not many of these about but I'd have no way of checking.
Is it just that it's closer to the camera... or is it that much bigger than the P? Looks huge! Either way, I've only got the nearly-10-pound blue Stingray-sized SUB on offer at the moment, so I can't help you out here, John.
No the PRS isn't that much bigger than the P bass, it's just the camera angle/illusion. As for your 10lb large-bodied blue Stingray... just how wrong for me could one bass be!
21. Sweaty marks will be removed when I add a fresh pic or two!
22. No fancy inlays or exotic woods but a stonking great bass! There may be some contention over the body wood as the grain etc. seems to indicate Swamp Ash but the PRS basses of this period were generally Alder. The neck is quarter sawn maple with a maple fingerboard cap and pearloid inlays. Controls are Vol/Vol/Tone with an active/passive switch. The bass is presently set up with round-wounds and a very low action. Comes complete with the original PRS case with preformed internal foam and the various hang-tags and tools. A few small marks but nothing major or through the finish (not even any worming), very good/excellent for an 8yr old bass. I'm only interested in fretted 4 string basses; any bass offered would need to be under 9lb in weight and ideally have a small(ish) body with cash adjustment either way depending upon your bass. I wouldn't dismiss any bass out of hand but I'm not overly keen on the colour blue... sorry! To clarify the 'small body' stipulation; I consider that a Stingray has a large(ish) body but a Sterling doesn't and I'm not really interested in cricket bat style basses.
23. +1 re the extra packaging (don't forget that cycle shops literally throw away the bast packaging you can get for basses in flightcases). My most expensive purchase on eBay (a very rare Ltd Ed Warwick which is my 'go to grave' bass) was sent to me in the skinniest/flimsiest gigbag (a black bin bag offered as much protection) that was placed between a folded over sheet of cardboard and then taped down one edge, top and bottom... I kid you not! Even though it miraculously came out of the packaging OK I went ballistic with the seller.
24.
Any ideas on how to clean it off?
Turn all dials to max and hit the lowest note that you have... that should shift any loose dust/dirt/mud! Alternatively if your vacuum cleaner has a variable power setting (or an adjustable hole in the vacuum tube) set it to low (open) and with the brush adapter fitted lightly brush the cone; test it on something like your sofa first just so that you gauge the power of the vacuum.
