These Duncan actives are a bit different to others because they carry on working when the battery is flat. I suspect that the active circuitry is bypassed when the supply voltage drops below a certain level. The sound you get in passive mode is relatively weak and a bit thin, not unlike what you have described, although useable in an emergency. I wonder if you have nine volts going to each pickup to power their inbuilt amps. I tried to use them in a bass with its own active circuitry and it wasn't very successful. I think they need to be wired up to passive controls, which gives you the benefit of a buffered output to your amp but not the benefit of active tone controls, as the dip switches mounted on the pickups don't do a great deal.
Ah! Now that does make some sense Stevie. However, you can get PJ pairs that are intended to be used in a bass together and I assume that they are driven by a single 9v battery? Time to send SD a friendly email I think.

That's a very sensible assumption and one that I'd have made. I'd just ensure that any cab you connect is 8ohms and you'd be OK.

Shill Bidding on a Charity Auction
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
intriguing- Is it just me who when ebay for say, that same bass and didn't really want to go above 400 quid but really wanted it, I'd have bid something like £403.76?
Exactly! no-one in there right mind who is bidding on eBay and wanted to buy something with say a £400 budget would bid £399; even a novice would bid £400 and those with the slightest savvy would bid a couple of quid (and pence) over that. Strange though that it isn't now showing in the bidding pattern! -
When trialled A/B against a standard SSI this bass sounds like it lacks a lot of Oomph but when played in isolation at Howie's today it wasn't 'that' bad! I 'think' Howie and I have established that these pups are not quite matched to the MEC circuit so I'm going down the route of returning the bass back to the original spec with EMGs (maybe even MECs as in my opinion they are virtually identical). Any body got any EMGs or MECs for sale or want to buy some SDs?
-
Bought a bass that has these SD pups retro-fitted into it and I want to return it to the original spec with EMGs (possibly MEC's). I'm looking to sell or swap these, so if you have an EMG or 'possibly' MEC P pup and want rid or fancy trying a SD instead, give me a shout, otherwise £50 per pup (£95 for the pair).

Can't blame you at all Ben for the change from Warwick to Dingwall as I've been admiring the various Dingwall basses for some time now but I'm unlikely to 'risk' getting a new one, I'll have to just keep my eyes peeled for a used one... however with converts like Ben I'm unlikely to find one used! Oddly enough my drift away from Warwick has been reversed of late but my oh my some of the basses that are being flashed around are testing me!
i have the sterling h piezo (and love it). as mentioned the controls are : volume, blend, treble, middle, bass. the active circuit is very powerful, and the piezo is great for slap, and apparently also for achieving a double bass type sound, if played near the neck. if you haven't seen this demo before, it will give you an idea, even if it is a sterling rather than a stingray.
Nice demo of what it can do.
IIRC, you cannot wire P pups out of phase, it does not matter which way round they are. Seems to me the problem lies in the other wiring, poss a dodgy tone cap?
Cheers Neil. So a pair (i.e. double what a Precision would have in) can't be wired out of phase with each other... can they be wired in some way that would cause the thin sound or is that a characteristic of the wiring or dodgy preamp (not sure I can ascertain if it is a dodgy cap as it is an epoxy sealed black box).

I've picked up a bass that has a pair of SD active P style pups in; they are the old style with the mini-switches and they aren't an identical matching pair. I'm 99% they are non-original to the bass (routes too big and the original advertising for this bass back in 87 shows it with EMGs). When I've plugged the bass in and tried it I'm bitterly disappointed with the tone and the first thing that sprang to mind was that someone had wired them incorrectly! The tone is quite thin and lacks punch even with the bass EQ whacked up full. I immediately did an A/B with my Warwick SSI and the tone was massively different (the standard SSI being big, fat and full sounding). First off the bass and treble EQ works so I know that the active EQ is working (old Warwick MEC style), as is the volume and pan. The pan allows me to pan as it should and as expected it is thinner on the rear pup than on the bridge pup but none more so than I'd expect. I'll try getting this checked asap but I wondered if it would be a characteristic of out of phase wiring that would produce a thinner tone and is there an easy way to verify this? Cheers.

If the tone of your present amp and the 600 are the same but the 600 is just 350w more power, then I'd go for it. You don't 'have' to use the extra power but you have it on tap and as headroom. Have no fear you are no more likely to blow your BE drivers with the 600 than you are the 250; unless you are a complete loon and continually drive your amp into clipping... which you won't as you'll hear it loud and clear!
... the chap i bought it from was giging in pubs and clubs and could'nt bear the thought of it being damaged, if you saw it you'd understand.
Tis true... I am that gigger! I 'loved' this bass and if it weren't for the fact I'm juggling the present basses that I have, then I'd be scratting about to try and get this back. Excellent bass. -
... im looking for something for more precise playing....so fairly high up! Warwickhunt, I may take you up on that offer to try the Mono seen as though you are fairly close. Id only need it a few days just to test it at home and id know straight away if its right for me.
Mine are reasonably short (not quite MK) so give me a shout if you are down the coast or if I'm up the Toon way I can drop one off.

I'm always dubious when the highest bidder is £1 short of a nice round figure like £400 (why would you bid £399; if you 'wanted' to win, that's just chuffin stupidity)... especially when there have only been two bidders all bar the first bid! Hope we can find a solution guys? Chris
Well I was just commenting earlier on today that Chris was a complete and utter twa

I have to confess that for a lightweight one man lift then the 2x15 Barefaced cab (soz don't remember the name) will take some beating and there are any amount of decent (2nd hand) amps doing the rounds that will give you the punky tone; in fact GK are renowned for ROCK but I've used them in more 'Grungy' bands and they are mint! I haven't once mentioned the Aggie DB112's and a Thunderfunk as that really wouldn't accurately match your requirements!

If you actually want to try a Mono strap before you decide then I have one you could try. It's not for sale but if you want to borrow it for a couple of days/week, just give me a shout.

Headless/through-neck no-name. What's this then, eh?
I'm now back to thinking it's a headless mod -the routing for the tailpiece looks rough & inaccurate, and the body base contour is probably just a convenient coincidence.
I agree; the rout looks a bit oversized and rough. I would imagine that the tricky bit with a conversion like this is the truss rod.
