How hard is it to get to the venue from the centre of Newcastle?
Not impossible but a Metro ride and then a bit of brown nosing with someone who has a car (hint below) wouldn't go amiss.
But my car has decent space in the back if anyone needed a hand transporting gear.
I was round at a mates place today and he has an SWR 4x10 cab for sale @ £195. One of the drivers has been 'temporarily' replaced with an Eminence unit but he hasn't sent the SWR driver off to be reconed just yet (it was a bit scratchy). I think he said that the price would include the SWR driver reconed and swapped out for the Eminence unit but I'd need to confirm that; either way you'd be buying a cab with 4 working drivers. Pics to follow but you know the score... black box covered in 'rat fur' with a metal grill. I'd need to confirm the ohmage but ideally it'd be collection from him in Tyneside or if you are in and around Newcastle he'd happily drop off the cab. I suppose carriage is a possibility but the size and weight would mean that you'd need to organise this yourself.
Sorry but IMO opinion for that budget you are wasting your time. If you were spending £2-3K though?
... and BF jumps in with both feet first! 1. Bass-specific power amps seem to be well pricey - is this a necessity for a decent tone? No. 2. How well matched (if at all) do the amps have to be? Don't 'have' to be at all. 3. Can anyone point me towards a good web resource? Hmmm... No. 4. Can anyone show me any working examples - something that would be feasible at a second hand price of £200-300 Again, No but I've owned a couple examples (Tech21, BBE, H&K Fortress into variously Peavey DPC, Yamaha, Carver) which cost a bit more than your budget but certainly nowhere near even £1k. You could get a used preamp for not a lot of money depending on what you want and power amps these days are relatively cheap (even new) though you could obviously spend silly money if you wanted. Actually thinking about it I reckon you could put together a pre/power rig for not a huge amount more than £300 especially if you are open to trying some early preamps (Yamaha did a 2U one iirc) that may look a bit dated but do the job.

1) Who's up for it in principle? Me 2) Would you prefer a weekend afternoon or a weekday evening? Either / or 3) Would you be prepared to chip in - literally - a quid or two for hall hire? No worries. I know a few guys over on Ginger Gits voiced interest so we can flag it up on there. As WoT said, it's just a chance to shoot the breeze and talk sh*te with like minded eejits.

Good deal on strings from The USA
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Accessories and Misc
We are often quick to have a whinge about bad service so I thought I'd balance it out by saying I've just had excellent service from Brandt over at ThePerfectBass.com in The States, who supplied 5 sets of DR strings for under £100 inc delivery (inc 15% discount for being registered on TB). I've never used TPB before (recommended by Molan) but I reckon at those prices I may well do again. If you intend using them it might be worth mentioning that you heard about it through this site/me/Molan and even if you're not registered on TB he may well be able to sort out a similar discount... no harm asking.
Damn... spoke to soon; I just got a bill of £20 from Fed-Ex for the import taxes/charges. Still cheap enough for what they are over here. -
So how much did they spend on market research before trotting that load of shyte out? Obviously there will be a few people who will quite like that design and it would be nice to see a move away from the innocuous black box but FFS what kind of tasteless, talentless chuffin designer came up with that! Sorry, I hate to see any company underachieve but that has a massive FAIL stamped right across it.

Hughes And Kettner bassbase 600 FT
Interesting thread this, not one that makes a lot of sense to me tbh, given this new information..
I 'think' I follow the thread and I hope there aren't going to be any tears before the whole thing resolves but I've invariably found that when dealing with PayPal, if it is has the potential to go wrong and cost someone money... it will. I sincerely hope this isn't the case for you guys though. -
I emailed him to give him a 'heads-up' that the headstock/tuners/neck/logo were wrong and he was opening himself up to potential problems if it was sold as a genuine 100% USA Fender. I got a message back; "hey im selling what i know,i bought this my self in usa and thats what im going by,i appreciate your concern but it is genuine, ive had it checked at music shop when i left it in for cracklin volume knob, the told me the value of it and i was gobsmacked,so ill take my chances.ta" If he was gobsmacked then it was valued a lot higher than he expected/paid for it... that should give him a clue. If he has been suckered into believing some guy in a shop I'd love to know which music shop as they are obviously f*ckwits!

Amazing bass finish! Merged with Ritter Thread (same subject!)
warwickhunt replied to JakeBrownBass's topic in Gear Gallery
An acquired taste, I thought it was a fancy abstract paint finish. If it were in amberburst or similar I'd probably be dribbling on the keyboard -
2 warwick basses - starting £500
warwickhunt replied to Chelios's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
His interpretation of the # of the bass in each respective run is woefully incorrect btw! It's a common misconception but you'd think that if he's gone to the trouble of buying two of them you think that he'd have at least that much grasp of the digit significance. The 2003 model is a bleached blonde thumb bass with swamp ash body and maple neck. It is number 3 of 171 made. - It is #171 made in 2003 (hence the '3') The 2006 model is also a thumb bass with a swamp ash birds eye poplar body and maple neck. It is number 6 of 8 made. - It is #8 made in 2006 (hence the '6') I agree he'd get more for them if separated. -
Man I bet xmas was fun in their house. He opens up his pressie expecting an old Fender only to find out she's blown £2000 (she says the RRP is £2269) on this. He's so miffed and disinterested with it that he gets her to put it on the bay rather than take it (or send) back to the shop where she bought it. I smell a rat.
Total and utter b*ll*cks story IMHO. As for the RRP; anyone who paid £2269 for a new SSI needs their bumps feeling.

Q&A re. ending listing early - 'I'm happy to get what I paid for it.'... I'm sure she would be but unless she got it for less than £900 she may be a tad disappointed.

Heads Up - dirt cheap La Bella Deep Talkers in UK
warwickhunt replied to Beedster's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I just got a set on a bass and I have to confess that even as a die hard roundwound nickel fan I'm quite liking them. -
Best idea yet! It's a real shame this can't happen. What does the law say about the possibility that the raffle/lottery could take place at one of the larger Basschat bashes? If 100 people pay a tenner cash on the day and the draw is made on the day, would that be legal? Also, it would mean that everyone who entered would be an eyewitness to the draw, and logistically and from an admin point of view it would be so much easier to organise…
That would make sense as there are raffles held in Church halls up and down the country... they can't be illegal! Or is it the value and destination of proceeds that dictates if it can go ahead?
-
Sorry if I missed this as I skimmed through the thread but have you established payment methods? I only ask as it is one of the major pitfalls as I see it; I'd be amazed if the 100 people who pledge all had access to PayPal (also fees on a £10 deposit would likely as not be about 60p-70p... not a lot but that's £60-£70 off the total), cheques would need to clear and banking them alone and keeping track would be a bind. I'm not wishing to urinate on your bonfire but I'd be interested in the final outcome. Oh and unfortunately 5's aren't my thing so I'll pass but good luck.
mm thats what im thinking.
Akai Headrush does looping (28 seconds or so) and delay. It can't delete just the previous loop which I think the more expensive units can but for under £100 you can't grumble. KT Tunstall did that Jools Holland live performance of 'Black Horse...' with one. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HYEU91d8ngc
There's a lot of old farts with bad backs playing bass these days!
+5 I may well get flamed for this and it is just 'my' opinion but I still regard the tone from some of the uber-lightweight amps (digi/switching types) and cabs (neo) to be lacking in a solid tone; so my bit of advice FWIW is, if possible try some of the lightweight gear out with your band before parting with your cash. I'm not saying it will be the same for everyone in every situation but in my set-up of a 3 piece (acoustic) rock covers band, the combination of reasonably lightweight Thunderfunk amp and trad magnet Aggie DB12's is the tone I've been missing for a few years while I dabbled with various amps and cabs to get light weight.

There appear to be crossed wires here! Are we talking Warwick LX basses or the Spector Euro LX? For starters the Warwick LX is a BO and the Spector a NT so they are different beasts altogether. The Spector and Streamer Stage I (which I think is more of a direct comparison on construction and price point) shape is essentially the same but I can assure you from recent experience if you were serious about buying either of these basses you need to try before you buy. To help the OP make a decision on a bass (Warwick or Spector) it would be beneficial to know what sort of price is his budget in. You can find used Spector Euro 4's and Warwick Streamer Stage I's for around £600 if you look long and hard (not so hard if you look here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=streamer) and the neck dimensions on this particular Warwick will be comparable to the Spector Euro basses but if you want slim then you are going to possibly have to look out for a late 80's early 90's Streamer as they are slimmer then the Spector or later Streamers. Of course this is all hypothetical garbage if it isn't the correct price range or you don't like the shape of the basses discussed. Same bass but different.
Bump So what do you reckon is £400 reasonable for this? I want a decent price but don't want to rip off BCers as I've had some good bargains myself fron here. Graham
You asked for opinion... I'm not saying that it isn't worth £400 but every bass has a price at which it 'will' sell and seeing as how you've not sold it straight away I'd say that £400 isn't quite the price for folks on here! The daft thing is that basses advertised on BC can sit forever and be very good instruments at a very reasonable price but they either don't float the boat of those with money to spend or they do float the boat of people with empty pockets. Dropping the price will eventually flush out a buyer but it depends on whether you are prepared to do that.

I'm sure there was one went on eBay last year for about £800; IIRC the seller claimed it had some connection with MK though I think that was simply his word as I recall people asking questions and he had no evidence of the fact. Just checked and it's long since gone from my eBay history.
