Its all very well having a bass that is capable of making sweet jesus love to your ear drums but there's no point in plugging it into an amp that is designed for bog standard fender type basses. The benefits are unlikely to be passed on all the way to your speaker. (And speakers are yet another thing entirely that I'm sure AlexClaber will pick up on).
Yep CK elaborated far better than I could have! As pointed out the benefits would need to be weighed against what your needs/equipment justified. An average gigging bass player (not saying the OP is 'average ) would likely as not hear a bigger difference by changing strings (for new ones or different brands/gauges) rather than upgrading from 9v to 18v or to take it to the next logical step... if you have cr*ppy cables (speaker and instrument) then maybe it's worth looking at upgrading those elements first. re. your OP - you stated that you can run either 9v or 18v and that you are concerned about overdriving/distorting your signal chain... tbh you'd need to suck it and see if you had the latter problem as some 9v circuits can be hotter than 18v (I had a MM that was RED hot 9v compared to my 18v Warwick) but if either works then you may as well go 18v as you may reap the benefits at a later date. Don't forget as someone has already pointed out, you can turn the vol pot down on your bass a smidgen if it is too hot!

I think that Michael 'WaterofTyne' has tried pairing his Mesa amp with the DR cabs to good effect (to the point where he has ordered the DR cabs IIRC). I'm sure there are others but you might want to drop Mark 'Marcus' a PM as he has plenty of experience with Eden and either recently owned (or still does own) DR cabs. I can't comment on what might match well as I have no experience with the DR cabs though I have owned a pair of Markbass amps... but as amp/cab combinations are so idiosyncratic/personal my view of the MB amps is skewed by the cabs I had paired with them.

I can't give you any of the 'science' behind why but if your circuit is designed to operate @ 18v then that is when you will be getting the best signal to noise ratio and you will be gaining more headroom. However... don't expect a massive (ie doubling) of output or suddenly to have a 'huge' change to your tone! I've run basses with 18v and 9v circuits and the difference isn't that staggering, though I will add that I'm talking about gigging rigs/situations, you may well notice a difference if recording using high-end gear. The 18v OB1 preamp that I have in my SSI fretless (Bart pups) is no higher/hotter output than any of the other 9v circuits that I have in other basses (nor was the 18v Audere that I had in an MEC equipped SSI) but the 9v/18v (voltage doubler circuit?) Tonepump Spector has a huge range on the tone controls; I have to run the Spector with the tone controls on 0/off to match my MEC equipped bass with bass and treble on 10/max. Just some real life observations.
ach give it a chance and 6 months, if the retail price has gone up then you should be able to sell it for more than that, or you may fall in love with it!
Funny thing is that as soon as I withdrew it I had contact from 3 people wanting it... oddly enough none have come to fruition! I agree though Luke, if I leave this a few months and Spector get a new distributor, prices are going to be up (potentially by as much as 25%-30% by my sources calculation) and I think I'd sell it fairly easily; especially with Christmas out of the way.
Does anyone in the West Yorks area have one of these? I really like the look and sound of these but being a small hands kinda guy (no rude jokes please), I'd like to find out just how chunky these necks are before I take a punt. :S
I reckon most of your fear stems from the fact that I said earlier that the bass had a chunky neck profile... bear in mind I am talking in comparison to a couple of basses that are as skinny as a skinny thing and by chunkier I am talking the odd mm here or there. You are right however there is no substitution for trying one in the flesh but I do have to say that I'm only 5'8" so I 'certainly' don't have large hands. In fact it's interesting that of all the people who have bought Spectors recently I appear to be the 'only' one to have mentioned the neck profile; all of the others (some of whom must have smallish hands) are more than happy with the neck dimensions. <edit> Try Before You Buy - West Yorkshire... no distance from Newcastle. However I'm sure Peter (Greeneking) and/or Al (Niceguyhomer) are closer... Al's is a 5 though! -
Funny, I've only heard of one other person having a problem with the WT800 and even after several attempts it wasn't right? Maybe a bad batch? What about a WT550? - My one has never missed a beat, it puts out 500w into 4ohms and mutes if you put the volume down to 0
When I was researching getting an amp last year I read quite a few reports on t'internet re. problems with Eden amps and reliability. Like you say maybe it was a bad batch etc but it was sufficient to put me off!

A +1 for the Thunderfunk for me. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone but it does warm for me!
i have owned a 'real' fender from usa...the build was not as i would have expected round the neck to body joint it sounded ok though and was made of tough materials..1998 model i havent looked closely at a squier but would expect it to be on a par with a usa fender most owners of any fender iirc are all about changing pups/ splts/ bridge/ tuners/ and god knows what else so what is the real draw with fenders they are easy to upgrade??
What's so easy to upgrade on a Fender that can't be upgraded on any bass? Actually, saying that, most basses don't need upgrading as much as Fenders do.

Effectively though if you go on the Spector or Thomann site etc. it is the same bass as if you were buying new... down to a new set of strings. I've attached the pic I used earlier but I should add that the pic was taken with the flash so the colour in natural light is a smidgen darker / less orange. -
This is now a better deal than I got. You'd be mad not to - assuming you have the cash and want one.
Cheers Sean. I've reached the bottom of my limit now so I may well either put this on eBay or limit it to a local sale then I can afford to knock off the cost of the case and delivery! -
I think Bassoctopuss shipped a bass to France, may be worth a quick PM. One small word of warning... I used to do a lot of small item eBay stuff (not bass related) and I'd say that half of the transaction that involved postage to France had issues with delivery (only place worse was Italy). I always got proof of postage when I sent stuff so I was always covered when challenged but honestly their local delivery services must be shyt. So I'd say don't skimp on insurance and ensure that the service selected includes musical instruments.
If an item is genuinely mis-priced then they have to sell at that price or have the option of removing from sale. It wasn't an error as they were indeed selling a stingray v at £499. The issue here is that they claim to have had only the one bass in stock and for sale at that price. What's more, they took your money even though they had no chance of fulfilling all of the orders for that item. Doesn't sound quite so innocent now does it?
Hey I'm not defending them nor do I think they are innocent! F*ck it, if you can get anything out of them GREAT. All I'm saying is that the interpretation of that old adage of 'it is priced at that so you have to sell it at that', is basically a glorious interpretation of the law. Of course they are wrong and if they took someone's money they 'should' have to fulfill their obligation but you'll find that even if you are prepared to force the issue and spend a lot of time and potentially money on pursuing it, REVERB may well walk away laughing... is it worth the hassle. Saying that if it was my money, I'd be kicking off bigstyle.
TBH, If Reverb have advertised EBMM SR5's @ £499.00 and stock listed at 'available' (which it was, when I checked before they withdrew the page) then they are legally obliged to complete the transaction at the time you placed the order. Just the same as displaying goods in a shop marked up wrong.... you get them for the price marked! Stick to your guns and see how far it gets you....
Worth a punt but unfortunately that is a 'bit' of an urban myth as they don't have to sell if it is a genuine mistake/error/omission. Proving that they were purposefully misleading a buyer might prove hard to stick but what the heck you might as well stamp your feet and demand recompense... it sometimes pays off.

Can't comment on the value of your amp but you'd be amazed how often something which is 'valued' at £xxxx rarely achieves that when you try to sell it. I can say that the H&K is a cracking amp (IMHO), though I'm not sure that you are saving a huge amount on room/size once it's case but you should save on weight in comparison to a valve amp.
The tension is only constant when the string is at rest. I was amazed by how much looser the strings felt on my Warwick than on the headless (double ball-end) Hohner that I had previously, which was due to increased elasticity beyond the witness points. I also suspect that instruments which exhibit more sustain of lower overtones feel looser because of increased string movement. Alex
I hear what you are saying Alex but I'll have to step back from this a bit because I can't see the 'logic' behind that. Could the differential between your Hohner and Warwick not equally be attributed to the string itself (manufacturer, gauge, core shape etc). I noticed a greater difference in string 'feel' going from one string manufacturer to the next than I do going from one bass manufacturer to another. I have a couple Streamers and the difference in 'feel/elasticity' between their strings is noticeable with different string manufacturers (same gauge), yet they have identical witness/anchor points. When I recently had the opportunity to swap between a Fender P bass with the same DR Sunbeam strings on as my Warwick SSI, both basses had an almost identical 'feel' as though they had a similar elasticity etc. Totally unscientific I know but it is 'feel' that we are talking about. Just shooting the breeze.

Too much hair for Pino in the Dollar vid... wise man watch clip with sound turned off! <edit> I take that back Just watched the PY clip (sound up) I didn't realise that Pino ever had that much 'big hair' I thought he tended to keep it close cropped.
-
I'm confused by this 'feel' or 'elasticity' by putting more wraps around the tuning post (though I've heard that longer lengths between the nut and the tuning post can alter 'feel' I've never witnessed/felt it myself, even when I had a left handed fender neck on a right handed bass i.e. long E string nor have I noticed any appreciable difference with thru body stringing)! When the string is tuned to pitch that is it! It is at tension appropriate for the given pitch and any 'stretch' allowed by string windings means that it is now NOT at pitch. Or am I missing something?

It'd be a bit mean to sell the cab without them... but I suppose better to ask rather than assume. -

Those people who made payments, did you make them with a credit card or via a debit card? I'll reiterate that I think with the present economic climate we are all very jumpy and assuming the worst; I'm fairly confident that this is just a typical music store f*ck up! However it does just show that online purchasing may be nice and easy but can be a pain in the backside and a major worry. Stores like REVERB aren't doing themselves any favours with their trading/selling ploys, as a community/forum we may only be a small part of their turnover (possibly minuscule) but if this kind of thing puts us off going back then they are taking the hit in their pocket and potentially losing sales to elsewhere.

That is pants Rob! I don't see how Overwater have a leg to stand on re. refusing to refund you; it 'isn't' what you ordered... plain and simple! I suppose it's a case of whether you go for a full refund or they supply you with the appropriate strings. Shame it had to happen now; 1) it's Christmas and you could do without the aggro 2) it'll be hard to sort out over this period and you'll not want it playing on your mind. Best of luck to you.
Errrr, am I the only one and Beedster who is thinking that you all my have been royaly scr..... A MM 5 string for 499, DERRRR!!! I've heard of loss-leaders and sweeteners to get you to look at other items but it is scary how some old heads on here have shown interest in these items considering where the economy is at the moment. I lost money on a cooker ordered from MFI in the Summer that was supposed to arrive last month, the bastards still took the money before we had it, I really hope the same doesn't happen to anyone on here, or anyone else for that matter.
I really hope that isn't the case (they don't have my money but I'm thinking of others). If it is then 'Karma' is working in reverse (though technically not, as Karma is about balance) and has turned around and bitten BassChat in the ars* after we helped out with the Jake Day fiasco. Alternatively I think this is just a case of REVERB leaving all of these (long gone) offers on their site to get people in to look and even if a few people think 'what the heck' and buy something else when the bargain turns out not to be in stock! I do know people who have bought off that stock list so they were genuinely there to begin with. It'll be interesting to get feedback from those that did place orders.
