My present musical project involves a friend and I doing a bunch of acoustic numbers with both of us doing guitar and vocals and me playing bass as well (obviously not while playing guitar); we are also both utilising loopers (well... trying to). I'd like to get a little mini-mixer to use both for house rehearsals and for a bit of live work. This wouldn't be the main PA mixer/amp it would just be a sub mixer for me and something to use as a mixer in the house which will just run into a guitar combo. Is there anything that is good value for money and is there anything obvious that I might overlook when picking a mixer? If you are doing this yourself any insight would be useful.

I have a love/hate relationship with Warwick Thumbs (NT & BO). I love the tone and aesthetics of them and yet despite owning about 5 NTs over the years I always find that when they are strapped on the 1st fret/nut position is too far away; no problem sitting down but I feel like I need my arms to be 6" longer to comfortably play down the deep end Oddly enough I like a light bass and I've not found the Thumb to be a massively heavy bass (though for its diminutive size I suppose it could be lighter) nor have mine ever suffered from neck dive!

mini-micro Geordie bass bash postponed
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
We are going to give this a couple of weeks so that we can get a better selection of amps and cabs together. In the meantime I'm going to experiment with sticking a vocal mic' in front of my cab and see what can be done with the minimum of equipment. I may well be picking brains for advice on uploading samples -

Recording samples of different basses/amps/cabs... pitfalls
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Great idea Mr Hunt .. I'm sure you know this site, maybe some ideas there .. http://www.basstasters.com/ It's very good for a number of reasons: he plays exactly the same thing every time so it's easy to hear the differences, and to associate them with the thing he's changed, and he only changes one thing at a time
Yes, I've often gone onto BTers and it is great fun just blasting through some of the samples it can be illuminating and I suppose that is the kind of thing I'd like to do. I'm just not sure what the results will be like as we aren't talking studio quality here Views and tips welcome. -
A select band of us will likely as not be getting together on Wednesday night (30-07-08) and blasting a bunch of basses through various amp/cab combinations I just wondered if people would be interested in the results and maybe highlight any pitfalls. I'd basically be sticking my b/v mic (Beyer??? 15 years old but cost about £150 back then) somewhere in front of the cabs (static positioning) and doing a 'brief' digital recording (one of those little BOSS 4/32 track recorders) of each of the different combos with the bass and amp recorded flat. Obviously it's hardly scientific so I'm not asking for the top brass to come laying in with derision about room acoustics (a large music room in a school) or the fact that the basses will all be strung differently and the fact that the gain won't be identical on all amps. Any suggestions as to the best/easiest way to do this that 'might' make it interesting for other BassChatters?

mini-micro Geordie bass bash postponed
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
OK Warwick, Fender P, Modulus Flea - into - Mesa Boogie, Thunderfunk, GK - ran through - Schroeder, Aguilar, DR cabs it is I'm wondering about the validity/feasibility of sticking an ambient mic' somewhere in front of the cabs (static positioning) and doing a 'brief' digital recording (one of those little BOSS 4/32 track recorders) of each of the different combos recorded flat... I might stick a quick thread up to see what the pitfalls will be -
IIRC Peavey did/do a cab with the same speaker config' that is Black Widow loaded... or was it an 18"! There are loads of threads about mixing your speakers and the effects that it can have, do a quick search. However, at the end of the day it's what you hear and you perceive that matters... unless you give a flying fig about your audience in which case you need to do some reading/experimenting
Hi - would have been up for it but on a show all next week. Would like a try of a TF. Fancy a change from my GK but not sure what.
Maybe next time! If you are local to the NE just PM me and I'm sure we can sort out you having a bash with the TF. We may well have DR cabs as well as the Aggies and Schroeder... nice! -
Following several communications between WoT and myself we thought we'd like to see how our 'new' cabs stack up against each other and how we remember our recently departed cabs sounding. I've got access to my workplace on Wednesday afternoon/early evening where noise isn't an issue and we can turn up the wick a bit. If there is anyone local to Blyth (NE24) and fancies bringing a cab or 2, an amp or 2 and a bass... or 2 give me a shout. If all else fails me and WoT will feedback on his Schroeder 410 and my DB12s through Thunderfunk and Mesa Boogie amps
I normally don't like Warwicks at all (sorry!), but that does look rather nice. Showing my ignorance again, how does one play a bass like that? Does one pluck two strings at once, 12-string guitar style? How's it sound?
You can try your own thing but they are generally played with a pick, striking the pair of strings at once, you don't have to pinch the pairs of strings with thumb and finger to play them. I had a Streamer 8 string and I could play it fingerstyle with no problem but I have to confess it benefited when I switched to pick and started playing 'Jeremy' or a few old Cheap Trick numbers My Streamer... can you guess why I sold it

I think this seller may have come up on this forum before and I think he is genuine/thorough but this does appear to be a classic case where a guy is trying too hard with his sell. He has described the fact that Dana B Goods in the States have 'heat treated the neck' and that he has spent '2 full days' setting the action on this bass... if it has taken that long to set up I'd be scared sh*tless that the neck will be a pain in the backside if it shifts in transit/humidity/personal preferrence for set-up http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=290249166447
This afternoon was The Jumpin' Hot Stage, The Americana Weekender, at the Sage Gateshead. The festival is two days of music from the most happening bands in American roots music... and us. The stage is in a spectacular location. The band before us - The Cherryholmes - are a family band from Nashville and they were mindblowing. Just remarkable. We had to work hard to follow them, but we managed! No soundcheck.. just a linecheck and GO! However, the PA was provided by the North-Easts' finest, Nitelites, and the engineers is one of the best in the biz and a good friend of ours, so it was effortless. I was going to use my lovely new rig, but The Sage have just invested in an SVT-PRO II and an Ampeg 410 so I thought I'd give it a run out. Nice, but... I'm not keen on those sealed 410s. They sound too boxy. Mind you, I didn't have much opportunity to tweak. It didn't matter, though.. they gig was fab, and we went down well. I stayed afterwards with Mrs. WoT and the bairn to eat ice-cream and get burned to a crisp. I'm going to regret this tomorrow... Next stop... Leicester, next weekend.
We noted you were playing that day when we went to the Sage to see Brandi Carlile the night before. Unfortunately spent all day waiting for timewasters to come and view my bike (i.e. they didn't turn up) so we didn't make it. If I hadn't seen the stage the night before I'd have thought it was some weird TV screen back drop On a more serious note... I bet you kept the bairn out of the sun and covered her in sunblock but did the grown-ups? Did they fook

Nice score re. the residue from the stickers. The one 'safe' method (least likely to affect any finish) is a soft cloth and WD40... honest you'd be amazed what that stuff can shift.
Rumour has it that Warwick changed from the recessed Dunlop-compatible design to the exposed Schaller type due to instances of natural (ie requiring wax) finished basses shrinking due to moisture loss caused by infrequent (or non-existent) waxing. The shrinkage caused cracks around the metal inserts, as these (obviously) don't shrink! Another interpretation would be that Schaller straplocks are more widespread, and that compatible buttons are a lot cheaper to fit than the recessed ones...
I've 2 basses with the recesses (and I've owned a bunch more), which get the perfunctory wax/wipe when I change strings (seems to work for me) and I've never seen the splitting but I suppose anything is possible! I do know of one person that plugged the holes and fitted the external type because he claimed that whilst he played with the strap fitted he was able to hear the pin turning/rubbing in the recess... either the quietest band in the world or the best hearing but each to his own.

Depending on how much stuff you have try looking at bags intended for photography. Not just the piddly camera bags but bags intended to carry loads of camera gear.
well, i went to see the ricky and...........i bought it it certainly looks like the real thing, i've checked it against my other one (a 1996 4003) and the only differences i can see are the fin fret inlays, binding and 1 input instead of the 2 inputs. even is its not the real thing it looks great! only has a few dings. and the tuner works fine and isnt that bad at all,the stickers peeled off no prob. the guy who sold it to me (through aberdeenmusic.com) was in DESPERATE need of cash. has played in bands for a while in aberdeen and i know friends of his. i didnt need a big f*** off mate with me thankfully i'll post new pics in the gear porn section. aberdeen dodgy? nae chance not everyone gets a share of the oil money unfortunetly davie.
Today should be declared 'Bargain BassChat Day'! What with this and all of the Warwicks flying out of REVERB

nice fender jazz on evil bay!
warwickhunt replied to ben_eat_pie's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I'm absolutely pants on Fenders (what's that you say... and most other stuff ) but those machineheads (pic of the back of the headstock) look distinctly 90's! Did they have those redesigned tuners in 82; just asking? -
Im trying to trade my streamer stage 1 at the moment and to be honest im having trouble.
Prices like this for new basses will hit a few 'nearly new' prices on this forum hard but luckily it's just one chain of stores not a full scale official Warwick reduction, otherwise that would be a kick in the nads for those that have bought new Warwicks in the last year or two. Don't forget there were a whole host of other bass related gear for sale and some of the Ampeg stuff looked muckle cheap.

BC must have done more for their sales figures than any other form of advertising could have done... any chance of them bunging us some freebie competition prizes
there are plenty of little old ladies who've no idea of the value of the vases their hubby collected while he was alive... plenty of people who go to car boot sales selling off highly collectible china without realising the true value of it... how else would antique sellers manage to make a living? Same with basses, this guy probably thinks it really is only worth £300 as it's all beat up with a broken tuner and he probably only paid something like £300 for it himself years ago...
Hmmm I accept the little old lady not understanding what she has but any kid/young person/adult (not suffering from senile dementia) selling an expensive musical instrument I'm not saying that it is impossible but opportunities for 'attic relics' are far and few between in this day of the Internet and TV programmes such as Flog-it/Bargain Hunt et al. Either way, hats off to the OP for finding such a bargain. I wouldn't dream of asking him to foreclose where he first found out about this little nugget (it wouldn't take a genius to track it down with even the slightest of clues) but once the purchase is in the bag I'd be interested to know...

I doubt there are many that will be able to give a real world comparison of these cabs and most of us will probably extol the virtues of the cabs that we have I have a pair of the DB12s and I must confess they sound fuller and rounder than the Neo equipped EBS 2x12s that I used to own. I won't try to make a fair comparison to the Tech cabs I've also recently owned as they weren't 12s and the 6x10 was a different beast all together, but comparing like for like tone with the same amp the Aggies are fuller and deeper 'for a given volume/gain setting'. I've not tested the Aggies limits even though they have been my backline (no PA support) cabs for a few gigs with a rock band but I wouldn't expect them to achieve what the bigger 6x10 cab could achieve. Though I stress that I think my ears would bleed before you got to the limits of the DBs anyway One thing that I would say is that if you are getting the Aggies be sure to get one cab with the tweeter, as you'd not achieve any decent top end detail without it and I'd have been disappointed had I not got the tweeter in one of mine (one tweeter loaded cab is sufficient). If you aren't sorted soon I fully expect to get together with WaterofTyne soon and he uses a P bass strung with flats and appreciates a completely different tone to the type I like (i.e. at least a smidgen of top end ) so he might be able to give some insight; especially as he had a Schroeder 2x12+10 (at least I think it was that).
I've gone and done it now too. Just bought one of the SSII's for £999. Funny thing is, we were in that same soundcontrol in birmingham in early june, picking up strings and other bits while on tour. I saw that very SSII on the wall, listed at £2199 and said to my lead singer 'that's my dream bass that is, if I got one of them I could finally do a proper Alex from Incubus impression'. Now, weirdly enough because of this site I've bought that very bass. Karma. It's coming on tuesday. Well excited. In the last month I've got the two basses I've aaaalways lusted after since being a teen: a thumb NT 5 and now a SSII 4. Time to stop with the GAS I reckon. However it's all very timely since we've got 3 really big support slots this august and I didn't want to use my knackered corvette at all.
Nice one One knackered Corvette up for sale then
They have a Dolphin Pro for £999 too, I still kinda miss my old one of them so it was tempting, check out the soundcontrol website for a list of all the stuff on sale.
When you posted about Soundcontrol stock, I assumed that SC may have been clearing out their old stock so I Googled 'SoundControl' and clicked onto the actual SC url... it took me straight to REVERB! One and the same.
