1.
As far as Warwick being Veblen - You've got to admit that Warwicks are quite expensive when bought from new? I know they are crafted in Germany from gorgeous woods and with great quality control; but £1000+ RRP for a bolt-on Thumb? I love Warwicks and mine is purchased from new, but I'm thinking that is a bit steep given the competition.
Lets think about this... which is worth £1000? A BO neck bass with active electronics, quality hardware, nice woods and concave/convex body shape or BO neck bass with passive electronics, quality hardware, painted body and flat body shape? Probably neither but in crude terms looking at it on paper, I think some of the BO Fender clones could be deemed pricey for what they are.
 2. Odd that someone has used the Veblen goods comparison with Warwick... I'd have thought that by now someone might have expanded the debate out from Squire v Fender to Squire type basses (i.e. cheap BO Fender style basses) to Sadowsky and Lakland! Not wishing to alienate myself from all of the aforementioned companies fans but surely that is a more direct reference to Veblen goods Did anyone hear the sound of a can of worms being opened.
 3. That is a bit naughty. You do have to wonder if he genuinely thinks that it is a Status! I remember these models and I'm trying to recall if it had Washburn marked on the bass somewhere... the pups were Status hyperactives IIRC and as you say the bridge cover has the legend Status but did it have the Washburn logo somewhere that he is genuinely hiding/not declaring? Not an unreasonable price @ £200 (at the minute) for a Status licensed product but unwary buyers could be suckered into higher bids if they think it is a full blown Status.
 4. I may have a Tribal Planet case/gigbag available for sale (used but excellent) if you are interested.
 5.
Guys, Thanks for the info - the two batteries were bought brand new and installed just as I bought the bass, and the previous owner did say that it was heavy on batteries. I've used it on and off over two weeks, probably for a cumulative total of two hours maximum, and always removed the lead when finished (been there before!). I then took my new pride and joy to a band rehearsal, plugged in and............nothing. Switched to passive, and used that for the evening. I'll check out the wiring and soldering soon, but I was hoping it was a known fault with a quick fix. Oh well. Thanks again folks, and any other thoughts, opinions or experiences will be most gratefully received and checked out. Also, any recommended Warwick repair people in Birmingham? Regards, Phil
Don't worry about finding a 'Warwick' specific repairer, it'll be a generic electrical/wiring fault; which at worst will be a fecked preamp and/or pups. Any guitar repair shop should be able to deal with it. As for a quick fix... I've not heard of a fault that would cause such a battery drain in such a short time yet still sound OK when it was in (powered) use.
 6. PM cd_david from the forum, he has a bunch of 4/5/fretted/fretless Overwaters.
 7. I've owned amps for 10-15 years ( you might find that hard to believe by some of my recent trades) and never had them serviced, as I've never known what could be done to them especially as some of mine have been sealed types with no fans so no dust accumulation.
 8. Never come across that one before... sounds daft but you are sure that the batteries installed were new? Has the wiring been tampered with i.e. unfactory like soldering? When you say the batteries last 2 hours do you know for sure they would be dead after 2 hours use (from fresh) or did you leave it (unplugged) for a few days/weeks then went back to find it dead? It's still not right either way but it might help someone else diagnose it for you.
 9. I know fine well that if I arrive at a venue (pub) with a raised area (stage) then I'm invariably going to need to roll off a bit of bottom end. On the same subject my 'usual' tone in the house has a bit of a mid scoop whereas live I know fine well that will just get lost so my EQ is generally flat and I'll work from there to get what I want. You'd be amazed how much mid and top you can add that sounds horrendous in isolation but can be required in a band mix that is relying on backline rather than PA support... unless you play a P bass with flats (sorry MB)
 10. Sadly beer crates are harder to find in pubs these days as that was the old fix
 11.
Big fat -1 for UPS from me... f*cking t*ssers! I paid for a bass to be shipped to Romania (nearly £100) and duly organised collection from my parents house as I am at work; they then proceeded to screw up the collection TWICE (didn't collect on the day promised and then the next day went to the wrong address). However, that isn't the worst part! I have just received a 'loaded' PM from a Warwick.de forum MOD (who was helping out the buyer as his English wasn't too good) saying that the delivery has been made but the buyer had to pay 1000 RON (about 290euro/£230) as payment for the delivery! I've contacted UPS and they assure me that they have a record of me paying for collection and the recipient shouldn't have paid a thing BUT how does this make me look? I'm just a tad irrate right now but for me UPS want shafting!

Heres my review on UPS, Thought Id try em, as the drummer I play with works for them, says their good, and appear to be a pro company, ect, and they do charge a bit,!!!!!. First up, send a bass to Ealing, go online, make an account, measure and weigh bass, book a collection time, and pay. wait in all day,,,,,,, try to phone, hmmmm, not much joy, as my collection day/slot got lost, in the internet, no probs, lots of apoligies, they will collect tommorow........Grrrrrrrr, anyways THREE VANS arrive !!!!! five minutes apart,,,, Bah. Bass sent, and arrived ok, though a day late..... Cost £32.00, inc insurance...... Second Bass, Phoned for collection this time, payed over the phone, £36.00 inc insurance, seems ok, surely. destination, Falkirk, bass collected, Monday, and on its way, then dissapeared for four days ,,!!!!!!!!!!! Gone,,,, WTF.... Many phone calls to many in fact, much anger from the guy I sold it to, he beleives me to be a right ++++ er ups cant find it ect, and so on,,,,Saturday morning, turns up at the customers house, out the blue,,,, no response or any sense from ups,,,,,,,as to why how and maybe what,,,,,, no more UPS for me........ T~~~ssers.. il use anyone but, from now on. Finished, have I heck, a month later, I get an invoice for a extra £66.32 !!!!!!!!!!!! Due to, "VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT SIZING", Even I couldnt dream that one up,,,,,and have to pay .......within the next four weeks...... My response, :brow: took two days to sort that out, all done, thankyou.......UPS I WILL USE YOU AGAIN, NOT.
Believe it or not... UPS have now sent me a bill for £200+ for the delivery of the bass to Romania Yes the same one that I paid for and then they tried to charge the recipient for, WTF are they playing at? If it's possible for me to neg UPS again for the same transaction then please make it so!
 12.
Do you use the effects loop? The jacks that break the "through" signal when something's plugged in may have got dirty.
Good point. If you don't use the effects loop or headphone socket very often all the more reason to give the jack sockets a good clean and repeatedly insert a jack in and out of each. If it starts working that isn't the permanent fix, you need to get the top off and give them a proper clean.
 13. They were out about 10 years ago (don't quote me on that date as I'm clocking on in years) and were a budget(ish) make. An amp/cab/combo was reviewed in the old UK Bassist mag many moons ago but don't ask me when!
 14.
You wouldn't believe the meeting we've just had at work... tough times ahead, man.
You know its bad when schools are closing! Our school has had an axe hanging over it for a few years (along with all of the other Middle schools in our town), it will now (along with 5 other schools) close in 2010 to make way for privatised education and who knows how many of us will be out of jobs. All to save money under the auspice it is to raise standards. Any way... about these cheap basses
 15.
Why don't we change the Amps and Cabs forum name to You can use any power ouput amp with any power handling cab. If any of these combinations makes bad sounds then turn down and/or stop cranking the bass EQ excessively or damage may occur. Simple.?
... because then we'd not have something to whinge about once a week
 16. I don't think I've got significantly less dosh than last year but I'm not about to squander as I really don't know what is around the corner. I'd imagine that to be the case for most people.
 17.
The new ones are rated 4 or 8 Ohms...
How very dare they! Pah, what was wrong with just leaving it at 6ohms I wonder? A stand alone 6ohm 6x10 cab rejigged to deliver 4ohms (wonder what they've done... if anything) will pretty much deliver the same performance, especially at the sensitivity they are rated at!
 18.
Hi everyone, I'm selling my warwick streamer, it's the 1997 model with maple body, wenge neck and fingerboard, straplocks and brass nut. Recently bought, i'm not an expert on basses by any means. Paid £420 for it but I'm willing to let it go for £350.
Nice bass, I'm appreciating the red gloss finish on Warwick basses more and more, especially with flame maple.
 19. It doesn't look as deep as I'd expect an early TE to be! Is it just my failing memory or were the TE not as deep as I remember? <edit> Doh! I just realised that it is a Laney fitted with TE drivers
 20.
I find that the perfect sound is just over the horizon.....
Funnily enough my perfect sound was the bass/amp/cab that I just sold
 21.
I love Warwicks, but that design is an abomination. It's going to stand on it's own tuners.... What genius thought of that?
It does come with a centre-pin fitting for a stand but I agree that I'm not a huge fan of the design. Must say that the re-released version looks tastier. I've often wondered whether (like the Streamer shape) it was licenced from N Steinberger!
 22.
I'd like to see someone resurrect the EA 3x10" design but in a lighter format. 5.3 ohms is a perfectly sensible nominal impedance for a cab, treat it as a 4 ohm cab that's a little easier on the amp. I don't like these designs that achieve a 4 or 8 ohm impedance through strange series/parallel connections and mixed impedance woofers because you get uneven power distribution. The Berg 6x10" uses 24 ohm drivers to get 4 ohm impedance, I presume the 3x10" uses 12 ohm ones likewise. Alex
Tecamp/Tech Soundsystems just label their 6x10 6ohms and don't fudge the issue.
 23.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Warwick-Lead-Nobby-M...1QQcmdZViewItem This is a first on me - a one time special run of 30 guitar versions of the headless Warwick Nobby bass (the first Warwick from what i gather). ...where's Warwickhunt when you need him?
Did someone call The Nobby's are/were some of the earliest and limited but oddly enough the bass version appears on eBay with surprising regularity... it's either a handful of duff basses that keep doing the rounds or owners never hold onto them. I've seen the basses selling for less than a grand. I've not seen the guitar version that often (nor have I studied it) though I do recall a while back someone questioning if the couple that have been noted are cut down basses! The pup mounts look like they could be hiding a cavity routed for bass pups but I'd really not like to say what the real story is. I suppose the scale length and fret spacing would easily identify if this were originally made as a guitar! Letters of authenticity from a music shop or HPW are so easily faked/typed up that I'd be reluctant to take that as the only form of provenance.
 24.
Got Mine for 150 I think plus a knackered old Londoner amp as PX! Can't fault it.
Damn! You did haggle a good deal.
 25.
Just purchased some "bling" gold straplocks from John. Not exactly a Warwick Thumb I know, but I'm excited anyway. Quality service, and a canny blurke to boot. Arrived very quickly. Just waiting to take him up on the offer of a cuppa (and stottie sandwich) one day!
Greggs is 300 yds from where I live and the kettle is always on Cheers for a nice and easy transaction.
