An instrument is worth what 'someone else' is prepared to pay for it! If people are paying £2k - £2.7k for a Wal, then that is the value of them. Conversely, I've just sold a NT' 91 Warwick Streamer that I personally rated as a very good and desirable bass which would have cost you the thick end of £1.5k 17 years ago... I sold it for £600 as that was its value to the bass playing populace You can discuss the vagaries of fashion and/or supply and demand until the cows come home but ultimately you put an instrument up for general consumption and the buyers decide its worth.

I got the 4 a few months ago, after having the 5 it just had to be The piezo is a Fishman unit and IIRC the bridges were designed/made by Fishman specifically for these basses. I have to say that they are one of the great undiscovered gems but lets keep that to ourselves I use the piezo to just put a little bit of extra top zing through my rig but I am considering using it as a piezo only tone for a potentially new 'acoustic' project I may have coming off. I'm sure you've already experimented but here is an image from the slip you get re. the piezo system. Obvious stuff but just in case...

'THE' vital component in any quest for tone is often the most overlooked... you! I always smile when people try gear out that I own as it rarely ever sounds the same when played by two (or more) different people. I'm not talking about pick V finger-style; even 2 fingerstyle players will illicit different sounds out of the same amp/cab/combo.

Find other bassists in your area (local rehearsal rooms, gigs etc) and ask nicely if they'd let you try your bass through their amp etc I don't know many bassists that would tell you to bog off, by and large many bassists are more than happy to help a fellow bassist out. Of course... I'd also suggest buying something completely blind off another BCer and if it doesn't suit sell it back on here... this is called GAS and is what keeps the sale forum ticking over nicely

Sorry I didn't see this sooner! 91 means that it is 2 band EQ. Control nearest the strings is volume with pull passive/push active (in passive the EQ controls have no affect). The control to the front and lower than the volume is pan (with centre detent) and the other 2 are Bass/Treble. Pups and preamp are most probably MEC... stick a pic' up then

I'd endorse the 'try before you buy' but if you are asking for personal opinions... I prefer the down-sized body of the Sterling, which gives you 99% of the balls of a full size Ray but with more tonal options and a slimmer neck. Don't forget that you then have to throw all of the other Sterling pup combinations into the pot along with the Sabre etc

I only ask as I must have heard the same thing every 6 mths for the last 3 yrs! re. the original post - you will always get a degree of individualism when dealing with bigger stores. This may have been a misinformed/under-trained member of staff... it equally could have been a ploy to get a bit more revenue for him/the store (do SC work on bonuses etc.?). As has been pointed out it could have been a bargain bin buy out and they may not all have had cases. Saying that you are right in principle that if a bass should have a case and doesn't, then there should be an appropriate reduction on top of any offer of reduction for a bass supplied with case (unless the reason it was cheap was because of no case... I am making sense ).
