what do people do with so many basses?
warwickhunt replied to greyparrot's topic in General Discussion
People who have dozens of basses I feel are simply hoarding and can't possibly use them all.
...and your point is?
re. Line 6 Variaxe bass. Has anyone got one? If so - do you use it on it's own or with a POD?
I still have the bass, which I use for shows/productions but I *kin hated the POD, I believe someone on here bought it from me back in the BW days. Like others I find some of the sounds very interesting and useful (though I can get quite a few of the tones 'NOT the 12 string/synth etc' using a Stage I Warwick and simply adjusting the onboard pan/EQ etc) but why oh why did they stick it in an uninspiring body that feels like a £200 far east F*nd*r copy... will I have upset F*nd*r owners
I can't see the point in owning 8+ basses.
If you 'did' have them, you'd see the point!
I've got four good'uns, and I play them all... but one is leaving the nest tomorrow. *gulp* Three is a good number, I think.
3 is a magic number!
How many pairs of shoes do you (or the missus) have? lots for different occasions, or to go with things, or just because they look good. You can choose what to wear (use) depending on a whole raft of different things, from what looks right to what you happen to fancy. Basses are the same and a whole lot cheaper than my wife's shoes!!
I have a very happy/healthy relationship in this respect... Every now and again I just hand my wife my wallet and say 'Here you are darlin' get yourself away and buy a pair of shoes or boots'. She immediately smiles and asks where the new bass is going to hang The perfect relationship.
Isn't it a good thing that I have no particular need to justify owning all those basses?
Exactly My 'story' for owning so many basses over the years is that I've constantly traded up, aiming for better quality and improved tone. In the last almost 30 years I've owned in excess of 50 Warwicks alone and I've no idea how many other manufacturers basses have passed through my hands. As a new bass came in an old one went out... then I made the mistake of keeping one when I bought another one... then another... and another Just didn't have the heart to sell them but luckily had the funds not to give a flying f*ck In all seriousness it did get to a point earlier this year where I had basses that I was restringing and putting batteries in that I hadn't played since last time I restrung them and put batteries in I decided that this was not best practice and had a bit of a purge. I may have had 7 or 8 Streamers at the same time but they were all different in tone... however some were subtle differences and that was the deciding factor -
Hello all, Im thinking about getting a stingray 5 from basscentral. Its about $1000 so what should I be expecting to pay in shipping and taxes? am I right in thinking the grand total would be around £650 - £700 I'm really happy some of you have successfully been down this route, makes me feel a lot better about it. Also How long was delivery? Thanks Nathan
The bass may be $1000 (approx £510), then I'd imagine you have shipping costs $150 - $350 (£75 - £175) + taxes @ 22% calculated on the total inc' shipping (£710 - £835), then budget for the Customs/ParcelForce handling fee at this end. You can of course look on the bright side and hope that shipping is less than I think and that you may not get hit for all of the taxes and handling fees but realistically I reckon you'd be looking at closer to £750 - £850. I've only ever bought 2 basses from the States and both times I was a bit optimistic with the total (hence I'm erring on the side of caution with your pricing) but I was pleasantly surprised that they arrived trouble free in 7 - 10 days.

How to confuse the p*ss out of your potential buyer. I gave up reading this description after the 2nd read through!
With all due respect, there are a fair few posts here that seem to exhibit narrow-mindedness and ignorance. Fine if you don't like the way someone plays but just about everyone mentioned as being overrated has achieved far more as a musician and a bass player than anyone here ever will. R.I.P Jaco, the Ox and all the other fine bass players no longer with us. And good luck bickering some more as I've had enough
I beg to differ... much earlier in the thread I put myself forward and I've done f*ck all as a musician or bass player This was a pointless exercise from its inception and should be treat thus!

Damn... the man seems to get more bumps and praise than sales A big +1 from me with regard to Dave's integrity. I just know I'm going to regret passing up one or two of Dave's treasures; just like I regret selling the Zon that I got from him! I'm sure we'll speak before you go Dave but all the best to you and your family in the move

Leave it as is. In years to come it will be called Mojo and will increase the value of your instrument threefold
No - a 4-string fretless Bubinga Corvette and a 5-string fretless Swamp-ash Corvette. My orignal post was about the 4-string, which went to a long serving menber of their forum, and the 5-string to a newby who posted in 'wanted'. He lives just down the road from me and paid cash when he collected.
Yes I knew about the Corvette but I'd heard that Flo picked up a Thumb 5 from the UK... so 2 + 2 = 5 -

Fender Jazz Plus. Anybody know much about these?
warwickhunt replied to haruki's topic in Bass Guitars
Without wishing to incur the wrath of all Fender owners (about 75% of the bass playing community, so that's quite a few enemies)... Fender owners 'can' be quite traditional, if they weren't then they'd be playing one of the many other Fender-alikes on the market. Hence Fender may branch out (as in this case) every now and again but they always come back to the tried and tested. I do recall these being released and though they did offer some advantages over your standard Jazz (the Kubicki inspired/copied controls NOT being one of them) buyers avoided them en masse and they were knocked out in bargain sales in dealerships all over! Not to say that it isn't a good bass... but I wouldn't pin your retirement/pension fund on it -
Ah, finally some intelligence! But then you like Warwicks
... and I over-rate myself
-
The original query asks who 'you' think is over-rated... surely if you list a bassist that you don't like, that then means that they can't be over-rated. You don't rate them at all, hence they can not by definition be over-rated by you

Among other things I suppose that age, condition and colour (yes believe me, colour on basses affects their value as much as any other consumer commodity) are going to affect any value. Stick some pics up with a more detailed description of the overall condition. How much you paid for it shouldn't have any affect on its present value... however, you emigrating and how quickly that is likely to happen have a direct relationship on its value

Brandi Carlile-The Story Hardly difficult but a great song with the chance to really shine through the dynamic range of it.

I've tried the polite approach of asking a few of the newbies to pop over and introduce themselves (which some have) but I begin to feel like a fussy tw*t as I'm pretty much one of the few that does. I'd personally sign up to the Beedster approach that if a newbie comes on and starts selling straight away I'd like to be able to tell them a few home truths (obviously only if applicable) without fear of public stoning from a section of BC who would consider me a bully or worse! damned if I do; damned if I don't
Have you seen this: http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200804.shtml#2008-04-21085253 Sell from a different PC (i.e. at work) and they'll want to 'phone you for permission?!?!
Well it has started, I think I'll change my user ID to Nostradamus -
FCS have made '62 NOS/relics but they didn't have stacked controls as far as I'm aware (not sure if all original '62 Jazzes had stacked controls). Chris

No I don't think there is a CS 62. Normally CS's are 64's
If I can unravel our conversation in my head, I seem to recall asking if it was a stack-knob and it wasn't it was a 3 control model. I 'think' stack-knobs were only ever used briefly in 61/62 so he may well have said that it was a 62 but meant 62 onwards. I'll suss it out when I see it or I can ask some further focused questions. Still not much idea of what sort of figure he wants for it or what it is worth!
Yeah, but my initial incredulence was because I thought it was down to cash payment full stop!! I'm just been and handed £150 over for an AXL acrylic P bass which I was more than happy with!!
Seriously, if eBay had their way you'd not be able to do anything unless it was transacted through eBay and PayPal. It won't be long before you have to use their ISP or have an email account with them or some other way of binding you so that they can control things and squeeze more money out of you. I say all of this but I still buy and sell on eBay every single day... not found an alternative way to fuel my disorder yet -

warwickhunt replied to thedarxide's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I've had sales pulled in the past for stating in the listing that I'd accept cash by recorded delivery only (i.e. I was stating that people should NOT send cash by any other means), we're only talking £10-£50 but eBay pulled them all the same. TBH they want the whole world to use PayPal and thus world banking domination will follow... they are tw*ts! -
This isn't totally accurate. I bought the bass after it had been up 2 days and sold it within a week(ish).
I wasn't directing my comment at you or anyone in particular and I was just generalising about that bass. Peter had it up for a while, gradually dropping the price, then Mark had it up for a short while, then yourself with the price gradually dropping etc. It did 'seem like' that bass was on here from start to finish for quite some time and people weren't selling limbs to get it regardless of how much the price was reduced. I'm not siding with anyone on this issue. I'm trying to play Devil's Advocate and point out that it just happened to be one of 'those' basses (and we've had a few) that people haven't settled on and they are generally good basses with nothing wrong with them. However if a bass is going to skulk around on here like a kicked dog it may as well be put on eBay and find an owner elsewhere. At any given time in that basses time among its various owners, one of them could have stuck it on eBay but no one did. That's a choice that people made for whatever reason. TBH had I been struggling to sell a bass on here and someone had taken it off me, stuck it on eBay and made a profit I'd be applauding them. At the end of the day I'd have gotten the price that I had offered it at The point about any deal re. the pup for the bass, is a separate issue that I'm not familiar with.

No, I'm almost certain the guy isn't a knock-off merchant. He was just very scatty, jovial, eccentric. He knew about the bass that he had for sale he wasn't vague about it but we seemed to discuss 20 different things in the space of 10 minutes that I lost track of what was discussed It appears he has a fair old collection of genuine vintage instruments but wants to branch out. No I've no concerns in that respect, I just don't know enough about pricing etc.
