1. NICE! But... are you (or the seller) sure that is an 89? The only reason I ask is that the sculpting on the back of the headstock is generally specific to the earliest model Thumbs. I could be wrong but gut feeling tells me the bass should be an 86, in which case you've scored a bigger bargain <edit> I see that the photo shows an 89 stamp and thinking about it the Thumb was only available as a 4 up to about 88 and then the 5s were introduced, so it may be that they carried over that rear headstock shaping into the 5s and 6s even though it was dropped on the 4s prior to 89. Either way a cracking looking bass
2.
I have a pair of MEC gold active p/ups. They are identical in size and are out of a Stage 2 five string, they also fit 4 string stage 1's, I think they are a ceraminc bar magnet Condition - one is mint, the other has some wear, photo's to follow they are 95mm wide, same as my 4 string jazz Cheers Tony
Are you sure Tony Stage I 4 string is a P/J rig...
3. If you are starting from scratch then I have a genuine EB/MM Sterling pup for sale... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20623
4. I shipped a bass to Romania (EU) via UPS and it cost £100. The bass arrived safe but there was hassle as they scr*wed up the collection day and then relabelled it at some depot which caused hassle for the recipient as he was asked to pay for the delivery. £100 is about the going rate for a bass insured for delivery from the UK to within the EU. HOWEVER... if receiving basses from the EU into UK I've paid as little as £18 (from Germany) and an average of no more than £30!
5. It can be confusing when there are a couple of threads on the same item but here is the thread of the bass with pics... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=15635
6. It's gotta have given you a boost, so build on it and go on from here
7. "I'm selling this on behalf of my church..." I'm just an owld cynical git I know but I wonder if I can ask to collect from the church
8. That looks like it has been well cared for and waxed regularly as it has a nice patina.
9. Nothing wrong with Warwick basses that couldn't be levied at ANY bass! Fenders... some people like em, some people don't. Musicman... some people like em, some people don't. Sandberg... some people like em, some people don't. You get the gist Their used prices have taken a big hit (for whatever reason) so I'd recommend looking at that end of the market and you could end up with a stonking 5 string neck-thru. There are plenty of Streamers in that price bracket and you may well score for a Dolphin. $$ and Corvettes will be cheaper again. If you like slimmer necks try to get hold of an early 90s or late 80s bass as they are 'generally' slimmer profiled but any NT should be less clubby.
10.
Some mentally deranged loon has bid this up to £182 and it still has 2 days to go!
£410... M.E.N.T.A.L!
11.
Sorry John, what gauge are they mate?
Whatever they are they are going to be lighter than those hawsers 45-105 as it happens Before reaching a decision I've just realised that the DR's are steels... I thought they were nickels (which I use) Sorry Dave.
12. Translate please... "three power amps controlled by a Closed-loop, Servo-controlled, Active Parametric Synthesis, Tri-amplified system" Isn't it a bit short sighted not to offer passive cabs and/or a stand alone amp head?
13.
But more to the point, I got a Spector Euro for a Christmas present 2 years ago, I paid for it, and it was my first real High-end bass, though through youth-related stupidness and lack of knowledge I sold it on. And latley I've been eriously thinking how it would fare now I'm more focused and havinga much superior amp. Luckily I know where the bass is and who has it: I even miss the colour
Did you sell that through the old BassWorld site? I recall agonising over whether to go for that bass (or one very much like it), mainly 'because' of the finish/colour.
14. How about a set of Warwick EMPs?
15.
Not being privvy to the esoterica of Warick basses, what would have been a more realistic price for this bass?
IIRC one sold on this forum recently for £800. I know they were changing hands a couple of years ago for £1000. I'd have bought it sight unseen and without hesitation at anything less than £700... anything more than that and I'd suddenly remember that I don't get on with the hanging position of Thumb basses
16.
I see this early model has a one piece bridge
Also the rear of the headstock is sculpted and the body shape is subtly different, the neck is also slimmer than the later models... all round bargain!
17. As Bill has said it 'could' turn out to be a dog's dinner BUT... occasionally accidents happen and it may sound fine; conversely it may result in a tone that you love (others might hate but hey it's your cab and sound)! If you feel that you need to experiment and are prepared to live with whatever results OR take the speakers and build design a cab around them, which for a 4x12 (or poss x2 2x12) would probably be on the large side to get the sonic best from them (I think Bill, Alex and others will keep me honest in this respect); then just go for it. However TBH you may as well buy or make a 'bass' cab rather than throw good money after bad.
18. Some mentally deranged loon has bid this up to £182 and it still has 2 days to go!
19. Planet Waves is spoken for (MB).
20.
Hi, Could anybody please advise where I can get hold of just the end pins for Schaller type design straplocks? Only need a few straps for amount of basses I have, & would like to avoid forking out for the whole assembly if necessary. Thanks
This might sound daft but can you clarify what you mean by 'Schaller type'! I'm having a Spring Clean and I've found a couple of complete sets that I intended fitting to my Warwicks to make them all the same but they are subtly different fitting so I was going to flog them.
21.
Why not just get one made, would be cheaper. All you need to do is find someone with ability to cut (and drill) small piece of steel plate possibly 2mm to size - a backstreet welder, or small engineering workshop etc. If you had a decent jigsaw & file, you could probably do it yourself - don't throw your money away on a new bridge!
Ooooh, now would brass give any sonic benefits
22. The strap is about 4' 6" long when fully extended. Non-slip underside and really comfortable when used with a weightier bass. I just couldn't use it as I tended to jump around a bit and it is a bit disconcerting when the neoprene springs Obviously this isn't a problem if you are less vigorous or quite like the idea of your bass on a laccy band £7 (+£1 for postage and 50p if paying by PayPal) Planet Waves 5m lead. angled jack one end, straight tuther, IIRC gold plated plugs. Unfortunately the spring loading on the jack plugs isn't compatible with my main bass (fine with all of the others). £8 (+£1 for postage and 50p if paying by PayPal)
23. Come on guys and gals... hit me with any offers on this as I've committed to a couple of purchases and I can only hide so much stuff before SWMBO spots it! I feel an offer of a shoe shopping trip coming on Owen has sold his 6x10 and this is a fraction of that weight
24.
yeah, i've tried using the bridge to raise the action, but that didn't work. as for checking the relief, at the moment the strings are so flat against the neck that it's not possible. i wish i could remember if i used the schaller bridge plate when i did the first fit...although i'm beginning to think that i must have.
Try slipping a block or something under the strings but in front of the saddles, just enough to raise the strings off the leading edge of the neck then you can tell if you have some relief or not. Either way if the bridge is so low that the strings are flat (even with the saddles jacked up) you are going to have to jack the bridge up somehow or as has been suggested get a taller bridge.
25. Might be an idea to put this on the amps/cabs section
