Amp / Cab Shootout! - Spur-of-the-moment Geordie Bass Bash!
I believe UK basschat member 'guiguite' may have one of these for sale?
Not any more... this is it -
My two GAS obsessions as well! Just sold a pair of bikes & bought a nice black '07 GSXR thou. Should shut me up on the bike front for a few months In recent years I've been through heavily customised Harleys, a few Aprilias, Ducati 999 & an MV Agusta F4 1000. Much more impressive than my motley collection of basses! I wish the bikes cost less than the bass gear though - mind you, I actually made money on the Duke & the MV so i guess it's not all bad
I've managed to retain the same bike (CBR 600f) for the last 4 years and it's probably as much bike as I'll ever need (ie not many people riding on the road today can genuinely ride a semi-sport 600 to the max and be on the ragged edge), though I do fancy a more upright bike to take some strain off my shoulder. Love the sound of big V-twins I'll likely as not direct any funds from the sale of this bass (as and when) into more bass gear as that's something that I use almost everyday whereas my bike is a weekend/holiday toy
Sensitivity is what made the difference. 4 ohms vs 5.3 ohms is less than a 1dB difference, nothing like a striking difference, in fact barely audible. Alex
This does genuinely interest me Alex and I know that you have as much knowledge as any one in this respect (and more than most) so I'd genuinely like to know is this difference in 'perceived' volume (heard by all three of us) dependent upon the output? That sounds like daft question but what I'm getting at is that at a low/moderate volume the Schroeder was very much louder than either the Tech or the Epi 310, however if the wick is turned up and the same test done again the volume differential is diminished. Is this simply because our ears and able to differentiate at higher volumes or is it that the other cabs designs are coming into their own. For referrence the Tech 610 cab is 5.3 ohms and 105db, the Schroeder is 4 ohms and 104db and the Epi 5.3 ohms and 103db... the ohmage should counter the sensitivity in each I would have thought -

re. the OP comments I've considered for a while that I used to gig 25 years ago with 150 - 200 watts and I had no problems whereas now most of us recommend 300-500watts to the various posters asking questions about power required for various band situations. I don't think we 'need' more power these days, I just think that higher power amps are cheaper to produce now, are readily available and are the norm in the marketplace! I don't think we've consciously needed or wanted more power (though headroom is desirable) but we've just been handed it on a plate
It may not been in the too distant future especially if I change cabs So this 'shootout' had mixed blessings then, did it? Lol Or were you planning on changing anyway? For what it's worth, if you like the natural sound of your bass(es) you should have a look at the Phil Jones gear.
No the gear change was already in progress I just wanted to hear a few 'small' cab solutions too see exactly how much of a compromise I'd be making going from a 6x10 down to a couple of 12's or a brace of 10's. I'm not doing the full-on 'ROCK' band thing (I don't think) in the future so a 2100watt 6x10 is a bit overkill for an electro/acoustic duo/trio with the potential use of an EUB It 'will' be a compromise but I've got to accept I'm not going to need gob loads of volume and internal organ emulsification tone I'm just seriously on the fence with the PJ gear it just looks too... small/dinky/odd. I'm not dismissing it out of hand but I just have the feeling that it may be too clinical for my tastes -
The whole event looked like fun - good idea.
It was but 3 hours just flew by and we didn't get the chance to do everything... or did we
Aye, Let me know next time you do one of these and I'll bring my Phil Jones stuff along with me. It sounded like good crack as well as a unique chance to try out some quality gear! Steve
Will do Steve but it was a bit of a rush job! It may not been in the too distant future especially if I change cabs -
Yerp, it's just sat on the opposite side of my room glaring at my Eden, so it is just gathering dust and I'd be more than happy to see someone make use out of it.
If you're prepared to box this up, I'll take it and leave it at our rehearsal space! I'll go and get a glass of wine and when I get back someone had better have bought this Oh and can I be cheeky and ask if the rack head is included
Hi Guys, did anyone try or like the Glock head, I have the Heart rock and wondered what you thought of the Art. It was on my short list of gear to try but couldn't find one in the UK. Thanks.

Also interested to hear how the Glock compared to the others, which cabs suited it best etc? Looks like brilliant fun, certainly better than your average Tuesday. Cheers for the pics ped
The Glock had literally arrived that afternoon and we were 1/2 way through the sampling before I got around to soldering up an XLR to Speak-on lead, so it didn't get a thorough test BUT it certainly seemed to shine when WoT put his fretless through it. We ran the amps on pretty much their mid/flat settings (contentious but for these purposes they were considered flat) and the Glock meant my expectations in the short time that we ran it (too many amps - not enough time). It appeared full without being flabby and had a clarity across the range that seemed to suit all of the cabs, which not all of the amps did. Not that there was a bad combination among them and as Robert said with a touch of EQing you could have brought most of the combinations within a gnat's chuff of each other with few exceptions. If I was forced to pick I'd say that the Glock partnered the Schroeder well but we'd be really nit-picking -
Ive found my schroeder to be miles "louder" than anything else ive played. and thats only the 1212, although its the R not the L verision, which apparently has more beef, but i cant vouch for that! Ive still got mixed opinions about the tech gear, ive got it in my head that its a bit weedy, with not even nearly any evidence to suggest so. just a weird subconcious assosiation!
I'll try and add full thoughts this evening (and the lads will chip in) but the Tech is far from weedy! It has quite a flat response (measured with 3 sets of ears rather than any scientific proof) and desperately cried out to be fed watts It seemed to come into its own the more power it was given. -
And this is where anecdotal evidence causes serious misinformation. Alex
I know where what you're saying here Alex (mid humps et al) but it was 'noticeably' different from both the 5.3 ohm Epi and the 5.3 ohm Tech and at various levels with a variety of amps! I would concede that the natural tone of the cab might account for some of the perceived volume increase (and nobody was more surprised than I) but it wasn't a subtle difference -
Still can't tell which one's you.
WoT had the camera, rslaing looks comfortable with a 6 string SEI and... I have hair Must say it was a blast but 3 hours just flew by Revelations... at least for me All basses should have LEDs My Tech cabs eats wattage Schoeders are cleverly designed and eat cabs EBS TD650's have a lot more tonal variation that I imagined 4ohms is 'significantly' different to 5.3ohms regardless of sensitivity WoT should never be let loose with round-wounds I'll get up tomorrow morning and have given this some serious thought. Cheers RL & MB My basses were an 88 Stage II with EMGs and an EB/MM Sterling with Nordstand -
The Ampeg and an ABM 1 x 15 are posted in the Amp & Cabs threads, not a sniff, which is why I was thinking of modding the Ampeg. I was looking to buy one of the Epifani UL310's that were for sale on this site with the proceeds, they've gone now! It's a dilemma as i want something light weight but can't afford to have 4 cabs lying around the house! Thanks for the advice, I'll think long and hard before making a decision. Cheers Charla
I'm not saying it wouldn't work... happy accidents happen! Problem is when you come to sell your modded cab it'd 'probably' be worth about the same as a standard cab. Saying that you 'might' recoup some money by selling your standard Ampeg drivers. Never an easy call but I'd still say selling your cabs as is (even at a reduced price) and buying something built and designed around a driver will still be the most cost effective.
I have an Ampeg SVT 410HE and I'm thinking of replacing the speakers with Neodymium Drivers. Ampeg suggest Eminence speakers, but there's a choice of 4 choices; Deltalite II 2510 250W 10"; Basslite S2010 10"; Basslite CA2010; Basslite CH2010 10"? If I'm going to spend over £200 on speakers I want to make sure I get the right ones!! Cheers Charla
You've no idea how this might affect the tone! I doubt very much whether it'd sound like your old cab but lighter in weight. Not saying it will be worse but it will almost certainly sound different. You 'might' be better off selling the Ampeg and buying a Neo equipped cab, at least you'll be able to try before you buy Just my thoughts.
I think the NT Vampyre is up with the Dolphin and Infinity in terms of price - or am I getting confused here...
No, you are correct. I'm not 'that' familiar with the more unusual members of the Warwick stable and just plain forgot that one
I thought the Streamer STage 1 & 2 and the Thumb neck throughs were the daddys? They certainly sting the wallet accordingly.....
TBH of the 'off-the-shelf' models the Dolphin and Infinity (excepting the Stryker & Buzzard which are hardly 'off the shelf' models) are the most expensive I believe. You are right though that the Thumb & Stage II follow these up.
