1. I think it's fair to expect that a piece of equipment should be fit for purpose and last longer than a month, so they 'should' be tripping over themselves to help you. The thing to do (and it's a tricky fine line) is establish your legal entitlement and then armed with this return to the shop and be firm but fair with them. No good bowling in and demanding money back because the amp is cr*p, as they'll get their backs up and try and claim that it was your treatment of the equipment. However if you go in and offer them the opportunity to correct the situation and explain that you require a combo to continue playing, you'll probably get further. Sorry I can't help with the specifics of the legality but a trawl through tinternet should help you and your local Citizens Advice Bureau give free impartial advice. Due to the time limitations on consumer rights I'd be acting sooner rather than later! With regard to which combo to go for if not the Ampeg... soz can't help there either! Looking back over my reply, all in all it's a bit useless except to sum up that you need to know your legal entitlement and be firm but fair with SC
2. Tasty! Less is more and he even left some space for the drummers. Can't see it being like that down my local on Sunday
3.
Does anybody know where I can find the width of the necks of Warwick basses, especially at the nut end? I like Jazz necks or fast slim necks and someone a while back told me I wouldn't get on with Warwick necks as they are thick? Is this true? Reason for asking is all these cheap Warwicks are unbearable GAS, I don't really need one but..... they look so nice.
The Warwick necks vary as much as Fender ones do. Bear in mind that the depth and profile of the neck has as much bearing as the width. I'll measure a couple of my Warwicks when I get home but the rule of thumb is (no pun intended) the older Warwicks have slmmer/thinner necks but the newer (especially BO) necks are chunkier and any Dolphin neck will feel like an aircraft carrier if you like pencil necks
4. Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick ran a 2/3 way rig with his 12 string basses with a signal going to Hi-Watt guitar amps IIRC. I don't think he ran X-overs or anything like that it was just the full range signal but that is an easy option if you want to develop a signature sound. I do recall reading that one of his basses had different outputs for each pup that was meant to sense the different octave strings but TBH I also recall thinking that was a load of ball-cocks as I couldn't see how his pup could be tuned to only receive the high string octave sounds and not the low. Though I did wonder if it was just a guitar pup in a bass that was wound/filtered/tuned to roll off the bottom end!
5. 4 pages in and no mention of 'Dread Zeppelin'... sheeesh what kind of Elvis fans are you
6. I guess this is just not meant to reside within the BC community, so duly withdrawn! Due to the fact that there are about half a dozen SSIs on eBay at the moment, none for less than £700 and certainly none offering free postage and gratis strings etc, I'd be an idiot for considering lowering this price. I'll see how the eBay basses go then chance my arm at relisting it on there.
7.
Shouldn't be a major problem I'd challnge anyone to scour the internet and find a bad review of these cabs
As you say mate I'm not too worried about the tone, as long as it isn't a boxy bag of pants and if any review I've ever read is anything to go by I can't see that being the case! It isn't actually going to be my #1 cab, it'll be for rehearsals and 'possibly' for use with an EUB and my Thunderfunk. I'd love to see build pics or details of materials and a few more details on the finishing (as this is often where home made products fall down). Look forward to a bit more info.
8. What are the chances of getting this couriered?
9. Now how the fook do you happen to stumble across something like that? FFS it's in a foreign language... what were you searching for that would have contained the appropriate key words? Did you put 'dirty Italian horn +flaps' in the search engine or what!
10. I've always wanted to cover 'In the ghetto'!
11. Thanks Lee... and everyone else of course Well I may be one step nearer to taking the plunge as an old playing mate from way back spoke today about a laid back acoustic style band and it has me seriously considering it.
12. There's some cracking Elvis stuff that is a hoot to perform. When Elvis was good he was great (conversley... ). Go for it Al it's all about enjoyment and entertainment and if you ain't got that you've got squat!
13.
Cheeky monkey I was toying with the idea of a see through one but thought it would spoil the look somehow. I was thinking of getting one made in a matt black (sort of like the pup cover) or a vintage white pearl but hey ho, something else came up and it went. Nicest smelling bass I've ever owned. I never saw it with a pearl on Peter, it was always white. Superb bass.
I know what you mean about the smell, I checked for potpourri in the control cavity I'm going to live with the bass as is for the time being and keep my eyes on the forum and eBay for alternatives.
14.
Yeah... there's a couple of proper schleps in there. My legs are going stiff just thinking about it... That's true, but we're doing a ticket do in the suite upstairs so I'm not sure how downstairs is doing. When's your gig? I'll try and get along...
Our Maggie gig is 21st May but I may well not be involved with the band at that point as I'm not gelling with the singer and/or material! You may well have still caught me in the band for The Tavern gig in Blyth on 12th April were it not for the distance from your 'local' gig
15. Things aren't firing on all cylinders with my new band and it isn't panning out as I want so I've given due notice and I'm going to be looking for fresh endeavours. If you know of anything give me a shout but I may well put my own project together so may be looking for other band members! Ta.
16. The usual local gig scene then MB I see the Maggie Bank has succumbed and is paying bands a set fee rather than percentage takings! We've got a gig in next month so let me know how it pans out.
17.
bump come one people, don't you think it is a lovely amp ?
It is a lovely amp and I've been tempted to get a used one off the German eBay for a while but I reckon the price isn't so lovely
18. You'd be amazed how much time you'll have to allocate for mix-down! Assuming the recording goes swimmingly and the engineer knows his stuff the biggest let downs can occur in the final stages and though this guy is paying for it and has every right to things being his way, you can give valuable insight to the balance in the final mix. To this end take along a CD / tape recorder and try to listen to the mixes on a bog standard machine through 'normal' speakers rather than the super-duper studio reference monitors, as that is how it will sound when you get it home.
19.
I'm actually really happy to see so many Newcastle boys on this board! Like the rest add me to that que for pics! i know another northerner who will no doubt be interested too i just think he hasn't seen this add yet!
Dang the Geordie fraternity are showing their true colours Oh and I have a horrible feeling that I was nearly an owner of this bass... I seem to recall checking out a bass of this description a few years ago... pics will confirm or deny this rumour. If that be your Stage II it looks mighty fine!
20.
I think rule of thumb is that if I'm selling it's worth 'bu**er all', and if I'm buying the price seems to double
+1 for that
21. How much was a new Fender jazz back in 1961? So a used one should be worth about...? How much was a new Wal back in 1978? So a used one should be worth about...? How much was a new Warwick Streamer in 1991? So a used one should be worth about...? As has been said they are worth what someone wants to pay for them. Fashion and current economic trends have some impact but when it comes to value, you can start sticking zeros on if it's old... regardless of whether it's a bag of sh*te or not
