I was in Electro Music in Doncaster where they have a good range of Sanbergs, Dave had just got a new one in and urged me to try it out, It was a black bass with matching headstock rosewood board with pearl blocks - sexy sexy !! Pups were Musicman / Precision OMG how BIG did that sound ! Really well put together too, only thing that put me off was the big plastic Nut !! looked really cheap and out of place on such an instrument
Come on then, what did you walk out of EM with?

That $$ wasn't a ltd that I am aware of but could quite possibly be CS or a special order that a large retail outlet might have specified. Warwick CS prices are just down right silly IMHO. They actually charge you a premium for ordering something lower spec'd than would come on a standard model; I considered a CS SSII which as standard comes with 3 band but I wanted a basic 2 band EQ, it was an extra cost option to get the lower spec'd EQ! Go figure.

how much do we charge for new years eve
warwickhunt replied to dabootsy's topic in General Discussion
NY eve just passed we (4 piece rock band) got £500 for a pub gig, our normal fee for the same venue is £200. -
Cheers John, excuse my ignorance, but what would be the difference between a jazz PUP and a split coil humbucker sound-wise? Chris
In crude terms think P sound rather than Jazz! Fuller, minus the hum that you 'sometimes' get with SC. I think Dimarzio did a lot of Jazz style pups back in the 70/80s that were this style. Many of the big names (EMG Bartolini etc.) offer this config of HBing Jazz style pup. The view by some is that you lose some of the clarity and openness of the classic SC Jazz pup and I'd tend to agree but it depends on what you are after.

To fit guard or not to fit guard? That is the question!
Funkeh! Leave the white one on...
Yes MB I have come over to the dark side... but it still hasn't got the 'F' on the headstock I'm inclined to think some form of white or possibly black. I'm never certain about the mother-of-toiletseat style white as it looks superb on some basses but equally naff on others and I don't want to fork out money to make it look worse. I wonder if Homer has any pics from when it might have had a pearloid? Nice to see you (and the other guys) Dez. We must catch up and let me know what bands you and Dave are in at the moment. Thanks for the comments everyone, does any one have a bass that they've had similar dilemmas with (with pics)? -
Keep it on. The bight white enhances the lovely finish I think. Leaves you wanting more!
I could make some lewd remark about women and skimpy underwear but that's beneath me... fnar -
So it's technically not a SC Jazz pup; from the look of it, it's a split coil humbucker in a Jazz casing. Not sure who he got to do his pups but if you were desperate to know then take a look at the thread re. 'Howard's Bass Place' in Newcastle. Then possibly contact Howard as he used to do a lot of work with JC so he may be able to help you. Just out of interest have you checked to see if JC is still building guitars/basses?
-
Jim Cairns (if it is the same) is a guitar/bass builder from up my neck of the woods, he's been going for ages and he will have no doubt out-sourced his pups etc. How do you know it is a Cairns? I didn't think that he badged his electrics.
Very dishonest of the seller - shame on him.
Let's just say that he's been economical with the truth. The bass still functions with the bridge as is but it is 'broken' and I hasten to add that this seller is a BC member!

Every time I look at the pics I think it looks better with the guard on but it's such a shame to cover that finish! Aged/off white might be nice... now who's got one? -
Be aware that the bridge damage is NOT 'just' cosmetic! I got a few pics and decided against this even if the bidding doesn't take off. It's not my place to put the sellers pics up on this site but if you want a copy of his email to me (inc reference from Kubicki about shimming the neck to alleviate the bridge damage) then get in touch before the auction ends. However, if you have a spare Kubicki bridge (not available otherwise)... it's a steal

Just picked this Sterling up from Peter (top guy), which I believe was also formerly in the hands of Homer (almost easier to name the basses he hasn't owned ) and I now have the dilemma of pick-guards! I initially thought the white guard that it came with diminished the lovely paint job so I whipped it off and now I can't decide whether a scratchplate adds to or detracts from the look. Naturally I'll just go with what I think in the end but I wondered if other people had similar dilemmas over their pick-guard?
Just to say that I met John and saw/heard this beatiful thru neck Warwick today. Sound guy and a real Warwick, made when they built their reputation! John is a great guy, have no qualms dealing with him.
Cheers Peter... and likewise a pleasure giving money to you I now have a dilemma; white, black, clear or no pick-guard on the Sterling. I can feel a new thread coming on! It was a pleasure doing business with Peter and if/when he gets around to selling off any of his other basses I can safely say that if they are as well cared for and set-up as this Sterling you're in for a treat.
If a gig has to be cancelled at short notice a band can always offer to get another act in to cover the cancellation, I think most venues would be satisfied with that.
If my band has ever cancelled a gig that's what we always offer to do. In this instance the band in question couldn't get anyone (they tried us among others) so had to resort to just cancelling. With regard to whether a venue is satisfied; I suppose that depends on the venue, how often bands dump on them and whether bands are walking in asking them to sign contracts with penalty clauses built in to compensate the band in the event of a cancellation... Lets be fair, bands are quick to cry 'hard done by' when gigs get cancelled but I know plenty of bands that don't give it a second thought when they ditch gigs. As musicians we can't expect venues to agree to such contracts if we aren't going to work it the other way.
-
One thing to consider is that a contract works both ways. We've all had to cancel gigs (singers got a sore throat/guitarist has a poorly ickle finger) and a venue would have as much right to claim loss of earnings from you! You might think that's far fetched but I know of a band that it happened to. They took all their bookings on the basis that a Landlord signed the contract with a sliding scale for cancellations (worked in their favour more than once) but on one occasion the main man in the band took ill and cancelled a gig at very short notice. The following week he received a request for compensation as the landlord had to pay extra to get a band at short notice... he paid. Failure to do so would have resulted in a small claims judgement and/or a very bad reputation. You have been warned
