Selling a bass to Hong Kong in 2021/22... facts.

Cheers folks. It is one of those situations where you think to yourself 'Surely, I'll not be responsible...' but you have a niggle of doubt. -
Selling a bass to Hong Kong in 2021/22... facts.
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
That is my hope/understanding BUT I can't find facts. I've said from our very first communication that I require payment in full via bank transfer (in £) before the bass is even put into the case for packing and I'll not be responsible for insurance etc etc. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ar5e for the buyer but if anything should go wrong, I'd rather it was left to the new owner to sort out... inc tax. It'll be cased, wrapped and boxed, with no issues (with video evidence), so any problems after leaving my hands are beyond my control. -
I potentially have a buyer for a bass that I have for sale on Facebook (not a BC advert or buyer). The guy is French but has residency in Hong Kong; I've pretty much ascertained he'd have to have been setting up the most elaborate scam for years if he was trying to con me, as he has pictures and history on FB going back years of France/Hong Kong and him being a bassist; so I'm not too worried about that. Added to which he is paying me via BACS before the bass is shipped and he is booking the courier with insurance etc and covering all costs. My 'problem' is that he would prefer the bass be sent to his HK address as he says there are no tax implications (£1800 bass), whereas France would hit him with 20-25% and he'd still have to pay to fly the bass with him from France to HK when he travels back there. I just can't find the answer to the taxation of 'private' goods sent to HK! Loads on HMRC re businesses but nada on private. If I understand it correctly, taxation etc should all be handled and declared during the booking of the courier. What I fear is that though he appears to be absolutely straight, I might get hit with the tax bill when it is delivered. I really would rather not book the courier as I'd be responsible in the result of damage, loss etc and even then, would/could I get hit for tax after it is delivered in HK Does anyone have any first hand experience in matters of this nature, I'd appreciate any insight.

To reassure you re. hanging basses by the headstock; I've got basses that have spent 30+ years on wall hangers with no issues. Tweaks every now and again are normal. Just out of interest have you changed strings recently and do you tweak the truss rod or just the bridge screws? It need not be temperature that is causing changes, it can as easily be down to humidity. You might not feel it but things like damp washing hung on rads or tumble driers running all day etc can increase moisture.

I think Dave was going to bring out his own brand 'Banger's Blingers' so he wasn't letting on. They were on the Ash MiJ Jazz.

We had rounds, flats and grounds. However, Dave Wilson took the Jaffa Cake for oldest strings... 15 year old ROUND WOUNDS and they were as fresh as the day they went on!

Have you a good imagination?

I need to do it all again so that I can try the ones I didn't play, through the cabs/amps/cobos that I didn't try them with! Thoroughly enjoyable day, thanks for the invite!

That very cab is for sale right now on BC!

Unless you are playing on a trampoline or you have regular stage invasions, it's pretty solid. I sometimes even stack a valve amp on top which overhangs a bit.

4 x 10" but as tall as an 8 x 10"... better than a 6 x 10"!

Each extension plugged into the previous, with only one into the wall?

If you think it's bad being an underappreciated bassist... spare a thought for drummers! We use drum deps regularly as our drummer often does shows, studio sessions etc and we've been known to literally put a shout out on FB (deps that suddenly remember they are doing something else) that we need a drummer in a couple of hours time. We 'never' let on to the management or the audience that the drummer is a dep and we've yet to have a single negative response to using someone who's never even sat down with us and worked out stops/starts.

Played the Hard Rock Cafe last night... except it isn't!

This isn't about anyone buying a property next to a pub? We were booked to play a venue where the customers attending knew there was a band on. We (the band) were happy to play to the managements level using their PA which they had full control of (other than acoustic level of drums) but we were disappointed when the management wouldn't turn us up, they thought our 2 vocal monitors (350w 1x10) were as loud as it needed to be. The drummer subsequently had to play 'down' to our monitor level. Incidentally, the guitarist has no backline and goes from Helix to IEM. Despite thinking this would damage our reputation (poor sound) we decided that cancelling would be even poorer form. We were frankly stunned to get a message from a customer claiming they'd suffered hearing damage. -

TBH their flying sound system was impressive but at no point during the whole evening (band and background music) did the levels get to a point where 8-10 folks sitting around a table had to raise their voices. In fact at one point (while we were playing), I could hear the general topic of conversation around one table... the cost of affordable housing if you must know. It was actually quiet off-putting playing my ar5e off and folks talking was drowning us out! LOL -

It was a private message but if we need to we can refer the gentleman to the corporation that is 'The Hard Rock Cafe' as we are sure they have a legal dept that can allay his fears that logged readings of negligible amounts can't/won't have caused him any serious harm. As it happens we do have public liability insurance but seeing as how we were using the venue's sound equipment and it is this that has 'allegedly' caused the damage, then I think they'd need to deal with it IF it came to it.
