I bought myself a cheap SUB ray 5 a few weeks back to see how I get on with it and use it for band duties. As it turns out, I really like it and could use a second 5 string so I'm not relying on one bass for band use. I was looking at the Sterling Ray 35 which is a bit over a grand but I've also realised I can get a full fat, US made Ernie Ball Stingray 5 from around 2005ish for similar money. Whatever I buy will be used for practice, gigs and recording so sound quality is the first priority. Is there much in it between these two models?

I guess I was mistaken. Maybe it changed, I'm sure they never used to get paid. Even half a million probably doesn't cover costs for some of them. I guess it probably costs an enormous amount for a band like Foo Fighters to charter a jet, fly over here with all their crew and equipment and play a show. They did it twice as well to play a tiny warm up show down at my local a few months earlier.

Pubs don't have to charge entry to profit from bands. They attract more people in who like to sing along to awful 80s pop songs and drink beer. There's some awful pubs around here that no one would go to if it wasn't for the bands on a Friday and Saturday night

As I see it, if a profit making event or venue is advertising live music as an attraction the band should always be paid. If a pub uses a band to get more people in to buy beer, it's only right the band gets a share of that extra profit

Although I made the point about bands not getting paid at Glastonbury, all the artist's get a weekend pass for the festival which is around £250 these days and the big bands get TV coverage, posh hotel, helicopter in to site and I'm sure they all sell a ton of records off the back of it. There is a risk of bumping in to Kanye or Chris Martin back stage and that's not a risk I'd take

It's unlike a farmer to not want to pay for something. Their wallets are normally wide open. 😕 Evercreech is just up the road from Glastonbury, they've heard that farmer Eavis doesn't pay bands at his little annual festival.

Mine is struggling a bit to run an amp sim and overdrive while recording but if I record clean then add plugins it's fine

I've just downloaded two really VTS plugins The Ignite bass amp https://www.kvraudio.com/product/shb-1-by-ignite-amps BOD Sansamp clone https://www.tseaudio.com/software/tseBOD The Ignite amp is very metal oriented. Ideal if you want dirt and that clanky metal tone. The BOD is a pretty decent overdrive preamp which seems to work nicely with the Ignite amp. According to one review it's better than a real Sansamp, I cannot confirm.

I've just switched from Ableton Live Lit 10 to Reaper after reading through this thread. The difference is huge. My PC is running so much faster with it, it's nicer to use and just better.

I was only joking. Beyond knowing I dislike it and don't have the talent to play it, I know very little about jazz other than it seems to have even more sub genres and sub genres of sub genres than metal.

Aren't you supposed to play the wrong notes in jazz? How do you tell its not in time when each member of the band is in a different time signature?

I was talking to the owner of my local music shop recently and this subject came up. He told me the worst bassist he ever played with was in a jazz band and he was actually technically very competent but he couldn't just play the bass part roughly as intended, he had to put in far too many fills and tried turning the guitar solo in to a duet and was just difficult to play with. He said he'd much rather a beginner just playing root notes with solid timing than an over playing virtuoso.

Sorry for what may be a simple question but I haven't got a clue! I've got a Ibanez SR300 (similar to the link below) which has had the nut modified to accept heavier strings. Now I want to put normal gauge strings back on I need a new nut but I can't work out what I need to buy. There's too many options available. There's a place for both since they sound different and serve a different purpose.
