  1. Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs  at SWX in Bristol last night. Support band, Irked were superb. Loads of punk energy and some almost heavy riffs.

Pigs were absolutely brilliant as always with their Sabbath inspired noise. Great performance and as always, the sound in SWX was brilliant. Third time I've seen them and they just keep getting better. The mosh pit was rather lively, I've got a few bruises this morning.

That's the MO of my Sabbath tribute. No Paranoid, Iron Man or anything. Alas it's still just at the planning stage.

I imagine the lights dimming to the sound of the air raid sirens... drummer counts out 6/8 and - straight into Wheels Of Confusion 😆

Every cover band does Paranoid (badly) and Iron Man is a bit over played. The Wizard should be in your set as well, I covered it in a band once it's great to play on bass

Is there anyone out there who can check over digital amps?

You might have to send that back to the manufacturer. Most amp techs can't do anything with pcb's and processors other than check the bassics.

I don't even think they even played the Syd Barrett stuff, which at least has cudos points in the realm of Paisley Underground and the lighter end of Britpop, with a chic outsider art thing going on.

This was strictly the wilderness years of post-Barrett, pre-Dark Side. Lots of fiddling around with guitar slides and delay pedals.

Their live sets must be constantly interrupted by drunk people shouting "Play Money/comfortably numb/brick in the wall"

I'd assume any Sandberg can do metal (them being bright basses by default), especially if you hook it up with a Sansamp for additional saturation and OD.

I think anything can do metal. I've even seen a Hoffner violin bass used by a doom band before.

A precision and humbucker should be an ideal pickup combination

I saw a Pink Floyd tribute act years ago called Ummagumma. They played songs exclusively from pre-Dark Side of the Moon Floyd albums. Therefore, no Money, Wish you were Here or Comfortably Numb, but everything from Live at Pompeii except that song where they wheel out a dog. 8/10 for authenticity.

I like that. Tribute to a hugely popular rock band that doesn't play the songs everyone wants to hear.

  7. I keep seeing Metallica tribute bands everywhere, there's hundreds of the buggers and most are probably terrible (even worse that the real thing post Newstead). And it got me thinking, every obvious band has their tribute act, but what's the most obscure tribute you've seen?

I once saw a Melvins tribute band which seemed pretty odd. They even had two drummers and were pretty good.

Isn't that tomorrow night? I'm just listening to their new album at the moment. It's cool, should be a good show! I'm a bit sad I can't make it.

    Arse.

You're correct. I best rearrange the childcare! We'll you saved me a wasted trip to Brizzle. Thanks

Mind me asking why the geographic stipulation? I know it's your choice but if you bond with a bass and it's within your budget does it really matter? Where out of interest is your first bass made?

I have a Mexican p bass. Most of the basses I've owned have been from either the America or Asia. I fancy something different

That eliminates most Warwicks, Seis, Overwaters, ACGs, and Shukers. Who in their right minds wants paint covering up lovely wood?

I just don't dig natural finishes.

Seriously, I would ask, what are you looking for in a bass? Once you understand what kind of bass you're looking for, you can then start looking at manufacturers. 4 strings, 34" is a very wide scope.

Something that doesn't sound like my p bass. Not natural finish. Not single cut. No narrower than a modern jazz neck. Lighter than a Peavey T40

A used Spector Euro 4 LX.

Thank you very much for your message. We have now closed your ticket after resolving the issue beyond reproach.

    Next!

    Aren't Spector American?

  13. I'm thinking of buying a second bass and thought it would be nice to get something British or at least European.

What are the options up to £1500, 4 string & long scale. I'm open to any pickup configuration

I think I missed them in Glasgow when they first toured the UK but haven't caught them since. They are on the list. I love Jeff Matz in general too and have seen High on Fire probably about 6 times going back to about 2005 which I think was before Matz even joined the band (I dunno, I was about 18 and probably drunk).

If you're a Jeff Matz fan, it's worth looking up his Facebook page. He offers online bass lessons. I was going to book some for my daughter for her birthday.

White Coats by New Model Army. It's been a few years so perhaps I should give it another go, plus a quick search on the intertubes has this cover that will probably help with the bits I couldn't get:

New Model Army's bassist has a really unique style to get his tone, he uses a pick and picks really close to the bridge.
