  5. I’ve got an early (‘91?} Eden VT.40 head that’s been dropped, fallen out of cars, and been abused by support bands “borrowing “ it. Still going strong, and with its Demeter valve preamp gives the loveliest DI tone of any amp I’ve owned. But going back to the letter of the OP (ie SS only and no hybrids) - definitely my Ashdown MK500.
  6. There’s a ghost in my house - The Fall
  7. Our sound guy gets really upset if I call them kettle leads - they're Euro leads....... (apparently)
  8. 'cos Julie Andrews can dance like a robot from 1984? I dunno...... Anyway: Who killed Bambi - Sex Pistols
  9. I thought the compact Denon wouldn't have enough guts to drive the dq10's, but it's actually got a surprising amount of grunt. The best and biggest amp I had was a huge 200W RMS receiver from the States (I think it was branded Kenwood - it was Sansui's top end stuff in the US anyway) that really brought the speakers alive. But yes; one of these days maybe something with valves.....
  10. Always wanted to put together a really stonking hi-fi system, but space, funds and wives have generally precluded it. Systems have come and gone; currently a decent-ish Denon DAB / CD receiver and 1980’s JVC linear tracking turntable. However - as with bass, it’s all about the cabs: I bought a pair of Dahlquist dq10 speakers secondhand in around 1980, and those bad boys have been travelling around with me ever since. One pictured with my Streamer bass for scale, but they’re quite shallow front to back. Immense, clear, transparent sound.
  11. Rudie can’t fail - Clash
  12. Tubthumping - Chumbawumba
  13. Ovation Magnum? Extra long length seems to recommended due to the long bridge/tailpiece, but I use standard long scale on mine without any problems. As mine is fretless I use La Bella white nylon (tapewounds), but if it wasn’t I’d probably use the DR Black Beauties I generally use on my fretted basses. The big neck pickup is quite warm, so a “zingy” string suits.
  14. Bigmouth strikes again -Smiths
  15. Grandma’s party - Paul Nicholas (How embarrassing to remember that one ; though it could have been the far worse “There’s no one quite like Grandma......”)
  16. Some great advice above........ If it was me; as I tend to go for vintage US-made basses I’d be looking at one of the lower range early alu-necked Kramers, which I reckon are still “sleepers” and can be found cheap if you’re lucky. A nice headless Duke on evilBay at the moment, for that total ‘80’s look - it’s the more desirable deluxe model too: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kramer-The-Duke-Deluxe-Bass-with-Original-Hard-Case/133484502756?hash=item1f144bdee4:g: edit: another one just in budget (who can ship): https://reverb.com/uk/item/35973344-kramer-the-duke-1983-85-headless-bass-w-original-case?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=1726164661&utm_content=campaignid=1726164661_adgroupid=70264195649_productpartitionid=822887595494=merchantid=254031776_productid=35973344_keyword=_device=t_adposition=_matchtype=_creative=391637461803&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjN6q0NGn7AIV0N_tCh1MOgT-EAQYAiABEgJawPD_BwE
