1. Looks like Gary's been as busy as Del-boy recently! Met up with him at a sunny M4 Cardiff West services on Tuesday for a trade involving me acquiring a rather nice fretless P neck from him. Total gent, a real pleasure to communicate and deal with - hope to meet up again soon! :-)
2. Nice - think you've got the price options the wrong way around though! PM'd
3. Fabulous - very Bernard Edwards (except for lack of frets....) Really miss my old Custom Shop NT Eagle; unique basses, and definitely at the top boutique end of the market when this one was made
4.
Broken headstocks are the fault of the user or clumsy person who last touched the instrument, not the manufacturer. If it stays off the floor, it's fine. It's designed to give optimal break angle over the nut without using string trees, not withstand impact with the ground, and I for one have no issue with that.
Apparently the reason that Alembic put "points" on the bodies of their basses, so owners would have to use stands rather than leaning the bass against an amp etc, with ensuing risk of bass toppling over I do get annoyed by adverts for Gibson guitars and basses including "the usual headstock / neck break repair" as if it really was usual - of the stupidly many basses I've owned (currently including 8 vintage Gibsons: 5 basses and 3 guitars) the only one ever to have a headstock crack was a Fender
5. That's lovely, that is..... Short scale, I assume? Hamburg-era Beatle-tastic bump
6.
What's the Moog circuitry all about - this is new to me?
See: http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/RDartist.php
7. Pretty unusual for a neck break on these as body & neck are tough as old boots - 3 ply maple neck with a big volute - it's the mahogany necked Gibson basses without volutes that were fragile, T'birds in particular. Problems are more usual with the highly complex Moog circuitry, which was often simply swapped out Andy Baxter listing a couple around the £2K mark, so I'd agree with above - £1.5K max I've got a Fireburst one (same as this) and the bound CMT model - fabulous basses if you can live with the weight
8. Hanging around (Stranglers) - best 2 notes of bass ever...... Surprised no-ones mentioned "Walk on the wild side" (not my favourite)
9.
The whole thread saw we 90% though an electrical guitar order form earlier in the week. This didn't help.. http://youtu.be/K6G_hugwG0E
Just pure magic. Rob Dean's RD Artist guit*r is pretty cool too.......
You know, his were custom build short scales.
Didn't know that, but makes sense - in all other respects the TB is about as polar opposite to the basses he was playing in the '60's as a 4 string bass can be. I'm assuming the "disco" bassline on "Miss you" was the TB
10. A certain Mr Wyman also a player of these of course....
11.
I appear to have developed GAS for a TB2000. Weight aside, are they worth the pursuit, or am I going slightly mad?
You'd be pretty lucky to find one I think, but they do turn up! Very fond of mine (pics) - sustains forever, harmonics in the tone you just don't get in an all-wood bass, the neck p/up is right up against the neck which I like, and I personally don't find the weight an issue. Also aesthetically it's a piece of pure sculpture in solid koa and polished alloy. The cold neck (also a bit wide for me ) is the main reason don't gig it as much as I should. Very different beast to the Kramer basses (I've also got a 650B)

Rumple

Bought a P body off Dave - smooth easy deal, a pleasure to communicate with, and he arranged courier the same day I bought it Top fella - happy to deal with anytime
13.
And I'll have it if Greg doesn't Howdy Greg BTW! C
Howdy Chris! How's the man cave / studio doing? Apologies, looks like I've probably snaffled this - if an Oly White alder P body, unreliced but nicely aged to cream hue is of any interest to you, let me know! Greg
14. Beat-tastic! What a lovely looking old Rivoli - great price too, even given the mods Fairly sure that in 1964 these cost more new than a Fender P! If I didn't already have an EB-2 and EB-2D I'd have this like a shot
15. Magazine / Barry Adamson / Ovation Magnum - respectively probably the most underrated band, bassist, and bass of the late '70's / early '80's "Secondhand daylight" is the standout album for me; listen to "Back to nature" and "Permafrost" for some lovely bass tones and playing Saw them live in 1980 (Liverpool Uni) - crucially Barry's bass was really prominent in the mix, some post-punk "gobbing" still going on which really annoyed Devoto.... And yes I do own an Ovation Magnum (1, fretless), longest keeper by far
16. Possibly the most predictable reply; but I'd have to nominate John Entwhistle closely followed by Tony Levin Of ones I've seen recently; Eddie Meyer of Turin Brakes
17. Not normally my type of thing at all, but that looks absolutely stunning and sounds lush - another fabulous bass, nugget!
18. I had one for a couple of years - main memories of it are: For: great clean tone, probably the nicest for my fretless I've ever had: hi-fi clear yet warm and organic. Very portable, very cool looks. Against: ultimately underpowered for my needs (why I moved it on), and preamp out is unbalanced line out only rather than balanced DI (which I think the higher rated models do have) Great amp,and must be pretty rare now - you won't be disappointed
19. Lovely - looks in great nick, and the classic finish / neck combination for a 'Ray IMHO Bump, and speculative PM sent
20.
Is the Martin still available?
'Tis indeed!
