1. I've a few Gibbos: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/76091-gibson-porn/page__st__60 and none of them would be my first choice for slap. Not my playing style of choice, but definitely the best slap tone I ever had was from an '80 MusicMan Sabre - agree with previous comments that Status / Alembic / Jaydee is probably the way to go though if it's your thing
2. Traded a Schaller bridge for a Badass one with ash - smooth easy deal, great BC-er to do business with
3. Did a trade with Lee for his very nice bitsa P bass - great communications, and he posted it packed very securely fast as could be - top guy to deal with!
4. A belated one from a deal in late summer! Chris bought a Wal off me, at a meet up in a Suffolk beer garden - he was on his way to a wedding, I was aimlessly enjoying the sunshine and the beer I'd bought the same Wal off him last year; at least the third time we've bought stuff back off eachother (think our wives are getting suspicious......). I should mention that the deal was a kind of three-way one that helped me to acquire something I particularly wanted and couldn't otherwise do; it involved Chris taking the biggest personal financial risk I have ever known anyone make, and he did so without a murmur. As many have said in these pages; Chris is a genuine legend and diamond geezer in these parts - particularly enjoyed silverfoxniks story above!
5.
Simply buy an old Cortina estate, load the Fridge into the back, throw a tartan rug over it and park it out of sight round the corner. The Mrs will never know.
Rumbled........ I thought I was the only one who'd done that! Have to admit I've never tried an 8x10, but have had on/off affairs with Mesa 1516's over the years, which have a mass roughly equal to the sun - still have one Modern cabs are fab, but nothing seems to move air like a big old-school cab......
6. Love my Kramer 650B, and this seems truly bargainaceous - I've seen the necks go for more than that Not just tonally great, but necks are zero-maintenance, no truss rod to faff about with Lumie bump
7. Not mine, but I wish it was!!! Just up my street, especially as JJB was my inspiration for taking up bass (Cambridge Corn Exchange, 1977) Hmmmmmmm............
8. With my first bass set up (Kalamazoo KB-1 & Carlsboro Stingray) I used to pick up Police radio fairly regularly. Just hope they didn't hear my angst-laden but dire punk fumblings on bass Sadly, no voices from the ether since......
9. Bought a P bass pickguard off Dan - smooth, easy deal, great communications, super fast postage - thanks fella!
10. Hehe - you KNOW you'll be trading it back to me one of these days Chris...... Seriously; even compared to other '80's Wals this one is an absolute gem - it was only prised out of my hot little hands as Chris was an absolute star and helped me acquire something I wanted more, Enjoy mate, and I reckon an unlined ebony board would look so right with that wenge body
11. Lovely old 'Ray, rather making me miss my old Sabre.... Bump and PM
12.
Cheers this all sounds like good advice. What's the best cleaner? People have said use Tung oil which dries hard like expoxy would this be a.good idea?
I'm fairly sure there's Tung oil as an ingredient in the Danish oil I mentioned above - it does dry hard, but more like a sealant than a varnish, and does seem to actually harden the wood; I've generally used round wound strings and the (ebony) board on my 1977 Ovation Magnum 1 fretless is almost unmarked. As pointed out, ebony is a very non-absorbent wood, so a very light application is all it needs
13. I don't know if this is recognised good practice as I'd picked it up from carpentry, but I've always used it on my ebony fretless boards (in fact all uncoated boards) and keeps them pretty much pristine and sealed against grot / sweaty hands - clean board off with methylated spirits (on cloth or kitchen tissue), rub on a light coat of Danish oil with a bit of soft cloth, rub off excess oil after a minute or so, leave for a couple of days to dry hard, and polish with a dry cloth before re-stringing

15.
I once accidentally stalked a guy- Firstly, I joined a Gibson leaning vintage guitar forum to ask a specific question about Gibson three point bridges, and a couple of chaps there were very helpful. Completely separately, whilst planning to add some pickups to my Squier Precision TB I came across a super cool Tele bass with an Alembic p-bass pickup in it. It was similar to what I wanted to do, and was just cool as hell! On an unrelated note, whilst nerding up on Gibson EB-0s and Melody Maker basses I randomly clicked on a guy's soundcloud, and really dug what I heard- mudbuckers, fuzz, and improvised space rock! Slowly but surely the screen-names started to look familiar, and I realised that the Gibson guy, the 'Telembic' guy, and the mud-fuzz guy were all one and the same! By pure chance, I had completely separately found and dug his basses and the music he made on them! I didn't think of it until I mentioned it on that first forum, but I think it crept him out, and it left me feeling a bit weird too. Regardless, those basses and tunes were pretty cool!
Excellent - and I hope you've checked out http://www.flyguitars.com run by our own EvilLordJuju I generally seem to trade / deal with the same BC'ers, traded a a load of gear with a member whose name starts with "B" and ends with "eedster" including no less than THREE double-deals, i.e. one has sold to the other and then bought it back again!
16.
Still looking at the Martin.....sigh....
You know you want it Bassbod.........
Well I've had a couple of nibbles on my Dee Dee today, so you never know. I'll hold you to the beard mind
That Dee Dee is lush! OK the beard was false advertising, but I'll throw in my '80's handmade Mexican cowboy boots instead
17. Good thread; reminded me just how good and quintessentially English the lyrics on "Dark side..." are From "Wish you were here" on I thought Waters writing got rather self indulgent and relentlessly "one man versus The System", but always a clever song-writer. IMHO he was the "Lennon" to Gilmour's "McCartney", and both were stronger when working with the other
18. "Brittle-dick" as Ian Anderson teasingly but affectionally called him on stage.... +1 to all above, Tull was the first "proper" rock band I got into when moving on from Slade, T Rex etc
19. Fairly sure the Kalamazoo neck used to be mine, and if so was off my very first bass - a mid-'60's Kalamazoo KB-1 I bought in 1977! Ooooh I've gone all misty eyed...... Looks a really nicely put together little bass, and easily worth asking for the pickup alone. Will is a gent to deal with
