Project parts: bridges, thumb rest

4. Heavy “keyhole” bridge/tailpiece, Jap late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s, really thick chromed base-plate with massive solid brass keyhole saddles, fully adjustable. Note that this is for thru-body stringing and the holes through the baseplate are staggered to allow for differential intonation. Great for a project and cost me £25 to import from the US - £17 posted -
They come and go on ebay, but they have an actual web-shop too. http://www.customworldguitarparts.com/default/gitaar-halzen/jazz-bass-maple-neck-20-frets-pearl-block-inlay-with-binding.html The shop seems slightly cheaper than ebay too
That's the one, cheers! I did wonder whether you could put a bullet truss rod adjuster on those: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRUSSROD-NUT-BULLET-CHROME-FOR-FENDER-GUITARS-/351118760252?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item51c04f193c as it looks plain wrong like that
Custom world guitar parts do one. Theyre in the Netherlands. Never seen one, but pictures look good
I was looking for exactly the same thing for my build last month, and nearly pulled the trigger on one of these on their eBay listing - they seem not to be listing at the moment. Looked excellent, other than non-authentically having a separate board. Worked out around £100 incl shipping, so comparable to Mighty Mite (who only do dot markers?) If you could live with rosewood these look good value: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-Fret-Jazz-J-Bass-Guitar-Neck-Vintage-Maple-Rosewood-with-Skunk-Stripe-/261511242840?pt=UK_Collectables_Vintage_RL&hash=item3ce348e458 I ended up shelling out a fair bit more for a genuine '78 Fender neck from the States in maple / pearl blocks - still worked out cheaper than a new '75 RI neck from Stratosphere (going on a AVRI '75 body)

The one that got away and the one best shut of...

Should have kept - 1980's Graham Crook custom fretless 4 - rather like a neck-thru Wal. Lovely, unique, sold for a pittance Well shot of - Columbus Jazz copy (2nd bass), a dog even by cheap plywood-bodied bass standards. I fitted a '60's Gibson mudbucker by the neck which must have increased its value by several factors of magnitude, had I but known. Swapped for a bike, which I crashed -
Used to be mine - rare and awesomely lovely and muscular amp, basically the power section of an SVT-2 with an added presence control. Proper old-school valve power, but hi-fi clarity and warmth You can plug an active bass directly into it without needling a separate pre Now been in Wales for past 3 BC-er's - where next???
I'm notorious on here for my dislike of P's. But that is beautiful. I really like the unique touch to headstock too. GLWTS
Lol - for almost my entire bass-playing career I've had a dislike of Jazz basses - probably and totally unfairly due to an early brush with a Columbus copy - but have recently been totally sold on them..... Many thanks for the good words, you have some fab basses there in your sig!
Yup, the EB-18 looks a little plain and 70s'ish but it feels and sounds amazing. I think Martin didn't quite get the look right in this case but what the hell - it does look a bit 70s but I quite like that and let's face it, 70s retro seems to be the flavour of the month again! Blimey, another fenny! There's a few of us out there although I have to say it's my adopted home. Great place to live though!
The styling was what pulled me to it - being mainly a Gibson player I liked the Gibson-esque construction (mahogany set neck, big humbucker) plus looks a tad like a non-reverse T-bird. I think there was a later twin pickup version Looking forwards to an Abbott Ale or two next time I'm Cambridge /Ely way.....

*SOLD PENDING USUAL* thanks for interest Just built this and lovin’ it, but looking to fund a Jazz Bass build project! Note; this is NOT a Fender. Those who know me know I like to build Fender P bass bitsas, in a relentless search for “the one” (see towards the end of my feedback re sale of the previous one) - mostly using vintage Fender parts. However, here I started with a very nice luthier-made Fender P-type one-piece maple neck from the ‘80’s. I fancied making a ’57 style Precision in the Nash / Bravewood mould; initially was going to be lightly reliced but I didn’t have the heart to – being thin nitro finish it’ll wear nicely anyway. So, specs;

Body- Precision, solid ash (lightweight), NOS aftermarket (Mighty Mite or similar) that had been in storage for a long time. Thin nitrocellulose 2-tone sunburst satin finish (tobaccoburst). No screw-holes / routes other than for what’s currently fitted.
Neck – 1980’s luthier-built one piece maple, rear walnut skunk stripe, long (34”) scale, satin poly finish (being harder-wearing than nitro), spaghetti “F-----r Precision bass” logo, heel-end truss rod adjust, brass nut. Original chrome (or nickel?) tuners. Nicely aged to a pale straw hue that tinted lacquers can’t duplicate. Chrome neck plate with etched Spaghetti logo.
Pickup – Bareknuckle ’57 split P (handmade, scatterwound, Alnico V). Really, really nice pickup, but I’ll include the box in case buyer wants to change.
Pickguard – Fender made, gold anodised aluminium alloy.
Covers – Fender, chromed, aged
Circuit / controls – CTS pots, Sprague orange drop cap, switchcraft jack, premium grade wire, solder-less connections for pickup. Chromed solid brass flat-top barrel control knobs.
Bridge – Wilkinson vintage hi-mass with solid brass saddles.
Only minus points are purely cosmetic, and down the fact that the neck was not made for a Fender body; it’s around 1.5 to 2mm narrower at the heel than Fender neck (so there’s a 1mm gap either side at the neck / pocket), and it must have originally been in a neck pocket longer than standard Fender as there are two screw holes just showing in the rear of the heel with the neck in the current (Fender template) body, which I’ve filled and lacquered - see pic. To me that’s not an issue, and more than outweighed by the fact that it’s a beautifully made neck and a lovely piece of maple - but if it bothered a buyer I can supply the bass as a loaded body, and any Fender-type aftermarket neck will fit perfectly. Likewise I was quite happy with the original tuners, upgraded string tree, and brass nut on the neck, but they’re of course wrong for a proper ‘57P, and if more authenticity was wanted they could very easily be changed. It’s a lovely light, playable bass with all the proper vintage P tone you could want. In a well-padded Warwick soft case - £250 collected from Swansea, or plus courier shipping within the UK (NB: I drive over to E Anglia from S Wales a few times a year) Boutique quality for Squier money………
I have a '78 EB-18 and it really is a superb bass.....different, but just a real joy to play. Somewhere between a P and a J with the phase switch. Good luck with the sale!!!
Thanks surfguy! Something special about Martins you can't appreciate in pics; this feels just as "crafted" as my series 1 Alembic, albeit simpler NB; I used to live in Ely (Broad st), though not a native "Fenner" - cool place! Still go to the market when I go back to visit

Fretless Jazz (Bitser Fender with '71 neck and tuners)
Shaggy replied to BassBod's topic in Basses For Sale
This is proper lovely, right up my street! (and reminiscent of your old sunburst '72 fretless P/J that I inherited at one time?) If I hadn't literally just put together a similar bitsa (2012 AVRI '75 RI Jazz body with 1977 US Jazz neck in maple with pearl blocks) I'd be at your door for this - have a bump anyway....... -
