1. First chatted with Joe many years ago - I think we both owned an old MM Sabre, Ovation Magnum, and a Gordon Smith bass at the time - but not lately, which is a shame Bought a 4u case off him this week, really smooth deal. Def one of the good guys on BC
  2. Gone locally - thanks for interest, and sorry to be letting you down Ricky
  3. I snagged a nearly new one on US ebay for a mere £350 shipped a couple of years back. The main drawback is - you've guessed it it - I have to lug around a mains transformer at least as heavy as the amp itself Bad move...... Superb little amps though; I liked it so much I bought the biggest brother - Mesa Titan V12 Big Block (UK voltage this time!) But it's still the Walkabout that gets gigged most . Changing the original Russian Mesa pre valves for Harma cryo ones made a definite improvement in tone and silent running
  4. Bought an Ashdown combo off Simon - only PM'd him on Sunday and met him in a cold dark M4 services at Bridgend tonight, which shows just how smooth the deal was. Top bloke to deal with, great communications, but I hate him as he's living my dream of playing DB with a Rockabilly band......
  5.
Wish I had looked at BC this afternoon, where was I today , Swansea !
Shame! At least you got out alive...... Would have made Mrs Shaggy very happy, seeing some gear go out for a change
Ahhh.....Abbott Ale! I live less than half a mile from the Brewery!! If you still have the amp by the time you come over this way and can put it in the back of your car then I could arrange to pick it up off you. No worries if not. Cheers
No prob, I'll be in touch when I do, might even be over Bury way. I was raised on Greene King!
  6.
I could just do with one of those. Shame I am on the other side of the country! I am sure you will have plenty bite your hand off for it.
Cheers Ricky - probably over Cambridge way next month for my pre-Xmas fix of Abbott Ale........
  7. Really nice amp that has served me faithfully as a rehearsal amp, and for a couple of small gigs too. USA made (guessing 1990's?) with a good bit of power that belies its 65W rating and a clear articulate tone - the pull "punch boost" and "bright boost" on the gain & master vol controls are particularly nifty. Best feature is for a small combo (easy one-handed carry with top handle) is it has a 15" driver shoehorned in which gives it plenty of low end. Looks like the same Scorpion cast-alloy chassis driver I had in my old Peavey 115 cab: great units. A tad scruffy but fully functional and has never missed a beat. Being Peavey - tough as old boots. Free collected from Swansea area (home - SA9, or work - SA6) - I really don't want to be @rsed to post it
  8.
Looks like my old Marathon! Pmd
Looks like my old leopard-skin duvet! Hell of a bargainaceous deal on that Marathon.....
  9. Sold Eddie a custom P bass whilst he was in Oz - top guy to deal with, great communications, finally met up to do the deal today in sunny Huntingdon Thanks fella!
  10.
Eh? Never 'eard of 'em...... Ok, a perennial fave of mine, hopefully not too eclectic. A collaboration between two musicians much better known for being in a couple of high profile bands 1. America is waiting 2. Mea Culpa 3. Regiment 4. Help me somebody 5. The Jezabel spirit 6. Qu'ran 7. Moonlight in glory 8. The Carrier 9. A secret life 10. Come with us 11. Mountain of needles
Wrong of me to have put my oar into this thread, as I'm travelling and BC-less for the next 4 days Answer is "My life in the bush of ghosts" by Brian Eno and David Byrne, around 1979-ish Someone else take up the baton quick.....
  11.
Phew! Congrats, Shaggy! Now bring us some more! Easy stuff, like The Beatles' "Sgt, Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". 12.
Sadly not, but that was an ultra cool answer. I did think of Yes's "Into the Lens" myself, where they sing "I am a camera", if memory serves, but had no idea there was this Buggles link to it, or I would've used the same song list but with better reasons! Maybe it's time to drop this one now. I thought it was easy seeing as many people on BC are antiquities like me. Might it help if I said it's prog from 1980, and the bassist in that band is highly regarded on BC but not mentioned very often?
"Civilian", Gentle Giant. Excellent Edit: actually a concept album based on Dolly Parton. Not a lot of people know that........

    Semi Hollows
Parden the daft question, but does the hollow body have a noticeable affect on the tone when played through an amp? I love the look of these hollowbodies, but have never played one, so just wondering whether they sound different to a solid-body with similar scale/pickups? Obviously, the pickups in these (ideally) aren't microphones, so they can only react to the moving string and can't 'hear' the hollowness of the body, same as on a regular bass, so just wondering how all this works...
With a semi-hollow the tone isn't as affected as one might think, mainly as most have a centre solid section of light-density wood to avoid the feedback problem you get when you add pickups to an acoustic instrument However the body definitely affects the way the strings move (and therefore the amplified tone) so the tone IS more "acoustic" - warmer, more harmonics, a slower attack and faster decay (I think.....). I'd say it's far more noticeable on a guitar than a bass, but for example; my EB-2D above sounds quite different to an EB-3, which would essentially have exactly the same hardware, pickups and neck, but a solid body Edit - the other bonus is they're generally very light weight....

    Semi Hollows

......and a couple of long-scalers I sadly don't own any more; '85 Gordon Smith Galaxy and late '80's Steve Smith Custom "EB-2"

    Semi Hollows

Some cracking semi-hollow basses here! Always been fond of both bass and guitar semi's; one of the very few basses I still GAS for would be a nice old Ric 4005 - technically fully hollow bodied My current S-H squeezes - a brace of Gibson EB-2's ( '69 EB-2DC and '58 EB-2) and English-made '67 Vox Wyman bass..........
  16. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970s-Ovation-MAGNUM-II-Bass-On-Board-EQ-The-Equalizer-Unique-Model-2-Vintage-/201147858329?pt=Guitar&hash=item2ed558bd99 Decent price for one of these (I've got the passive Magnum 1) - goddam shame it's in the US..... Lovely slab of Honduras mahogany for the body too
  17.
I remember seeing a Wal for £200 back in the mid-90s. I'd have had it if I'd had £200 at the time!
Oh Jeez........that one really hurts........ I've had a few bargs - - '60's or early '70's Guild Starfire bass hard case in excellent nick for £20 - see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1969-GUILD-USA-STARFIRE-BASS-CASE-fits-also-GIBSON-EB-2-SEMI-BASS-/121410296735?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c449e1b9f - Mint Peavey Classic 30 guitar combo (all-valve / US-made) for £90 - Squier MB1 bass in decent nick for £50 - early '60's Broadway semi-acoustic guitar with twin Fenton Weil pickups for £30 (punk-era graffiti all over it, but came up lovely with a nitro re-fin and a Bigbsy fitted)
  18. Excellent - liking that a lot, though agree with Bassassin that a pearl pickguard might work better, and def needs a decal
  19.
If youve still got it i'll have it.
Sorry DarkHeart - just sold earlier via PM.....
  20. Absolutely stunning.......my all-time favourite guitarist - John McGeogh - played one of these If I hadn't recently splurged on a '72 Gibson LP Custom in black I'd be trying to seriously shift something to buy this..... Bump
  21. What I mainly remember about Peter Noone is he was a regular on the Basil Brush show in the '70's - I hope the poor guy's got over that.....
