1.
The Sweet (along with Slade, T.Rex and Bowie) that first got me excited about music in the early 70s. Hell Raiser was the first single I bought.
"Fox on the run" was mine (which the excellent "Miss Demeanour" as B-side, as I recall) Saw them live without Brian - good, but just not the same The Motley Crue comment is an accurate one, but whereas Brit Glam-rock was always something of a self-parody, '80's US hair-metal took itself a tad too seriously.....
2. could be interested in the head if Skez wants the cabs, depending on price - also I'm in Swansea and could probably get the cabs over to Skez next month
3. Great bassist, one of my early influences "Slade Alive" is one of the best live albums ever; often regarded as a glam / teenybopper band, but shows they could rock with the best of 'em
4.
The only thing that might raise an eyebrow would be a pointy metal machine.
Tell Dusty Hill that.......... (pics) Having used most of what's out there, for me the ultimate blues machine is a Gibson EB-2D. But being as that counts as pricey / exotic, how about an Epi Jack Cassady or Rumblekat?
5.
I lusted after the green one every time it came up on eBay but never had the funds to buy it...
Likewise!!! Seems a damn shame to paint such a lovely slab of mahogany, but the solid colour really sets off the lines of the body, and makes the bass look more like the Deacon / Breadwinner guitars that inspired it. The p/guard (carbon fibre?) looks ace too
6.
Check out Glenn Tibrook on bass, he doesnt do a bad job considering he's not really a bass player
Saw Glen play in Pontardawe last sunday; played 6 and 12-string guitar, a big electro-acoustic bass, ukelele, keyboards (synth and a little hand-pumped reed organ), percusion on one song; also used an i-tablet for a couple of "audience-interactive" numbers. First set solo, and the second with two other musicians, swapping eachothers gear. Looking much older, but the voice stronger than ever and put on a hell of show; some excellent "alternative" arrangements of the Squeeze hits.
7.
Bump for new trade option, might accept 5 string as p/x ( something like the paulman that shaggy put on here a while ago would be ideal ) mike b.
Hey Mike - Loving that old Matchless! Current "ride" is a '72 Norton Commando 750 Roadster (when it's not p*ssing oil.....) Would have been quite tempted to trade the Paulman ( http://basschat.co.uk/topic/153472-withdrawn/page__p__1361326__hl__paulman__fromsearch__1#entry1361326 ) except that I've just kitted it out with the Roland GK pickup / V-bass system. Amazing bit of kit, but as a minimalist I'm not sure it's me yet....so may yet get in touch if you've still got this in a while Bump for a lovely guitar from a great luthier (just to be pedantic; I think it's a flame maple top, not quilt?)
8.
Tru-oil is a polymerized linseed oil. The polymerized tung oil I used seemed to be more sturdy and less user friendly than Tru-oil. It was definitely thicker. It's often referred to as a penetrating oil but it's really just a surface finish. I don't know if the linseed versus tung makes any difference but the particular stuff I used was different than tru-oil. That said I've finished necks and bodies with tru-oil and it works great and is the easiest finish I can think of.
Danish oil (from any B&Q etc) is a blend that contains Tung oil - whether polymerised or not I have no idea - and I use that on all my unlacquered boards, fretless and fretted, once a year or so. With regular use it seems to harden and seal / waterproof the outer "skin" of the wood without actually being a coating, especially good for those "sweaty hand" gigs
9.
Strikes me that even Wal owners that expect to be buried with their bass, like me, are aware of its value. Value that epoxy on the fingerboard would undoubtedly destroy. I am going to get a vinyl roof on my Ferrari though. Phil
+1 An ebony board doesn't need a coating IMO. I've an '85 fretless Wal Mk1 Custom and a '78 fretless Ovation Magnum 1, both with ebony boards, both had heavy use with roundwounds, both with so little wear it's negligable. I think the lined fretless Wals had rosewood boards though - which would wear faster, but I personally still wouldn't mod a Wal.
10. Liam's definitely one of the good guys on BC; offered a load of used strings for free on the "recycled item" sub-forum, of which I had a set of Overwater flats. Friendly as can be , and sent the strings straight out not even wanting postage covered - cheers mate!
11. Ha - what are the chances of 2 theorbo posts within a week? (see: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/160066-excotic-folk-bass-instruments/ ) That's lovely; well worth selling through the Lute Society too if you're not already. If you've got any tutors / sheet tablature you're looking to move on I could be interested.....
12.
Was re-stringing this yesterday (managed to get an hour to myself) and got a couple of shots - Alembic know where to get some nice timbers
Absolutely stunning, loz, loviest cocobolo top I've seen on any bass. At least 6 control knobs too many for me though.......
13.
Top strap button behind the headstock?
Behind the lower pegbox for the fretted strings, not the upper one for the diapsons. Suprisingly comfy to play - effectively an ordinary tenor lute with part of a harp grafted onto it - but I wouldn't go busking with it! Billyapple - the brag above my avatar says all you need to know.....
14. Another very postive experience - ordered a custom cover for a Deltabass 300 combo and a "standard" for Aguilar GS112 cab - communications couldn't have been more helpful or friendlier, and the on-line dimensions submission form for custom covers is a cinch. Both covers arrived within days, great fit and construction - really impressed. Did I say they smell nice too?
15. I'll take the Overwaters if available please - happy to pay post / donation
16. Not a folk instrument as such; I play some Renaissance / Baroque lute and couldn't resist this theorbo / arch-lute recently; traded my best mandolin for it. I should have pictured it next to a P-bass for scale - it's 5' 9" long! - but eggshell-light. Courses should be double rather than single as is; I need to source or make some more tuning pegs.
17. Jeez - most of my favourite stuff is slow & moody...... Vaughan Williams – Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis Jean Sibelius – 4 legends Thomas Tallis – Spem in Alium JS Bach / Kaspsberger / Weiss / De Visee / Dowland – any music for lute Simple Minds – Hunter and the Hunted Joy Division – New dawn fades / Atmosphere Siouxsie & the Banshees – Dazzle / Swimming Horses / Overground / Icons Magazine – Permafrost / Back to Nature / I want to burn again Japan – In vogue / The other side of life / Nightporter Musee Mecanique - Nothing glorious Goldfrapp – Pilots Brian Eno - Sparrowfall Scott Walker – Seventh Seal Glenn Campbell – Witchital Lineman Johnny Cash – Hurt / One Bob Dylan – Knockin’ on heavens door Pink Floyd – Echoes / Cirrus Minor Judie Tzuke – Stay with me till dawn Kate Bush – Boy with the child in his eyes / Breathing Mark Knopfler – The long road (Theme from “Cal”) Led Zeppelin – Since I’ve been loving you / Tea for one Snow Patrol – Light up Sutherland Brothers & Quiver – Arms of Mary The Jam – English rose The Shirts – Tell me your plans Cat Stevens – Into White / Sad Lisa Chris Isaak – Wicked game Alannah Myles – Black Velvet Smiths – How soon is now / Reel around the fountain Julee Cruise – Mysteries of Life Ry Cooder – Theme from “Paris, Texas” ....sorry for going on, cxould go for ever!
18. Bought a Roland V-bass off Joe; easy deal, great comms, top chap to deal with - thanks fella!
19. You'll of course get as many answers as there are BC-ers. I've had 2 sets of P/J's; Seymour Duncan Vintage P with SD Antiquity II J (on a fretless P) and passive Bartolinis. Thje SD's of course had the more vintage tone, but for sheer clarity, punch, and growl the Barts are absolutely superb. Also had DiMarzio P / P on a BC Rich CS NT Eagle - I still rate the Barts as top. As said, unless you're buying ultra-boutique you'll alkways get your money back on here if you try and don't like
20.
It was great to go to a gig and get a real in your face view of the artists. Just like the old days at Erics in Liverpool and Smartyz in Chester circa 1979
Yup, used to frequent Erics around that time too, and even with a name band (Joy Division etc) you'd be right up close. Still got me card! You must have gone to Deeside Leisure Centre too??? Out of interest, what bass was JW playing on Sunday - his old Ovation Magnum?
21. Just bought a Levy's strap off Paul (to feed my uncontrollable strap fetish.....) Super smooth deal, despatched super-fast, great communications - cheers pal!
22. PM'd
23. ........so effectively a c63 fretless, except for non-reverse headstock Lush!!!
24. Second deal with Chay - always a pleasure! Just bought a Delta bass 300 combo off him; couldn't have gone smoother
