1. Having owned both JG and FG '73 4001's I'd have to go with Fireglo - though I have a nostalgia for JG Ric's mainly because of Gaye Advert Do like that Blueburst though!!
 2. A really stonkingly lovely P, that I could only bear to part with as I was upgrading (in vintage terms) to Chris's '65P. As said, the neck is an absolute joy to play, the slab board is of the really dark, dense rosewood you only see these days on custom and top-end instruments. For a player rather than a purist this is about as good as it gets for a '70's / '80's Precision, and for not much moolah! (be warned though - he puts flats on everything.......)
 3.
What's your budget and what power output do you need ? Have you maybe thought of a used Markbass F1 or maybe one of the Markbass modular amps ? With an F1 you have 500 (real watts), a small head for smaller gigs and reliability. I've read that a lot of these obscure class D amps have in reality nowhere near the output that they're described as having, and there are reliability issues with some of them. I was going to get a class D power amp to go with my Alembic F1X, I'm probably just going to use my F1 though. It's very loud, it's reliable and why spend £300 or more on something that I don't need. I can just plug it into the effects return socket, bypassing the F1's preamp and just using the power amp section.
As it happens, yes - I've been looking hard at the Markbass and TC Electronic amps, and portability is definitely a major plus with those. Adavantages of the pre/power set up are (1)it utilises a very nice pre that's languishing in a rig too big and heavy for my current needs ( http://basschat.co.uk/topic/109149-ampeg-us-made-300w-all-valve-racked-amp-head/page__hl__ampeg+rig__fromsearch__1 ) and (2) if the power amp dies terminally it's less of a big deal than if a modular amp craps out. As I'm only using the power section for stage monitoring at the moment a low-powered cheapo power amp would do me fine TBH, but makes sense to get a tidy powerful one for full backline option. Ta for the advice though - may yet get an integrated digital amp, but fairly sure I wouldn't bother putting the SVP through it.
 4. Great, thanks for the help fellas - looks like thios is def do-able then Think I'll get 2 of these and bi-amp (not!): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Martin-Audio-MA3-0-Lightweight-1u-Power-Amplifier-3000w-/150674725384?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item2314e9da08
 5. Apologies if this has been covered before, couldn't see the answer I was asfter on a search I've got an Ampeg SVP-pro preamp that I'm considering pairing with a 1u digital power amp for a decent lightweight backup rig to the Eden VT.40 head I use for gigging. There seem to be quite a few around the £200 mark on ebay, but just wondering; 1. Any makes / models recommended? None of the brands are familiar to me, and are obviously mainly aimed at DJ / PA applications 2. From the few that list the specs it seems the inputs are invariably 2 x balanced XLR's; understandably rear panel space is bound to be pretty cramped compared to a conventional 2u power amp. As I DI I need to keep the DI output from the pre to run to the desk, so are there any 1u digital power amps that accept the unbalanced line out (jack) output from the pre? Or can I split the DI out to run to desk and power amp? Any thoughts appreciated!
 6. No different in principle to a BO bass - I did one a few years ago; put a bit of dowel through the top tuner hole and suspended it by that from the garage ceiling so the entire bass could be sprayed in one go for each coat. That was using satin poly, but if you're using nitro I'd probably spray it with the bass flat (horizontal) doing front and back separately, nitro being so runny. Another tip; if you're using sellotape rather than proper masking tape; give the fingerboard a very light smearing of vaseline and wipe off before putting the tape on - stops the glue from the tape getting left on the board when it's removed. Be brave, and good luck!
 7. Bite his hand off - I'm assuming this is the TB2000, these are very highly regarded and only 1000 odd were made, plus only a very few of which I'd guess were fretless. Pre-recession these could change hands for £2K, and they're pretty much bullet-proof - I think when dropped the body could sometimes split along the line of the big internal cavity. Plus if the p/ups and bridge aren't original they'll be almost impossible to source, but it's still a bargain. I've got one and yes they are heavy but not outrageously so, and are fantastic, unique basses. If you don't want it, then you've gotta offer it here, and if you do then you've gotta put some pics in the porn section!
 8.
+1, and Greg knows his basses. I'd love one of these in fretless, and I have a Ric 4001 c64 to trade if anyone's interested! C
Kind words Chris, but untrue (or rather; yes I know MY basses but nothing about any others......) Can almost say for certain you won't find a fretless, but ebony boards were used across the range - so a defret is an option - and they crop up quite regularly on t'bay. 2 at the moment ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1972-ovation-bass-S-N-B-00041-very-rare-collectors-dream-/270829963752?pt=Guitar&hash=item3f0eb949e8 - which I'm pretty damn sure ain't a '72, don't think these came out until '77 - and the active Magnum 2 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ovation-Magnum-II-1262-Bass-wOHSC-Near-Mint-All-Stock-w-Active-EQ-Not-Reissue-/300608290804?pt=Guitar&hash=item45fda67ff4 ) Anyway, you know you want to keep that c64 and if you sell it you'll buy another one...
 9. Cracking example of a fab classic bass. Mine is the fretless model of yours and must be similar age as it has the black finish p/up frame rather than polished - I'll update my porn thread soon rather than hijack yours! A few pics of some Magnum bassists though - the legend that is Barry Adamson (ex-Magazine, Bad Seeds, solo), Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Jah Wobble, Ross Vallory (Journey - sorry about tiny pics!), bassist with ELO
 10.
Is this still available...? BB
Unless he's selling another one, the OP PM'd me on 1st Sept that he'd sold it. Bargain indeed Quote; dont get this, is it just a pre-amp when its got power ratings on the back? Would i need to buy a power amp to drive it? Like This Unlike " No it's a fully integated amplifier - pre & power amp (the AH250 SMX?) - Trace usually indicated on the front panel of their amps which pre-amp was fitted as this has all the tone-shaping features.
 11. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Guild-SB-666-Bladerunner-Bass-SUPER-RARE-/140609333104?pt=Guitar&hash=item20bcf82770 Interesting, but I can see why it's super-rare (apparently) As Rutger Hauer said in the movie of the same name; "Time.....to die"
 12.
One could argue that the good old PJ set up is what you are describing.
Very hard to beat the P/J format, and hard to beat simply upgrading pickups as the single most effective mod (other than changing strings, I guess....) I changed the p/ups in my "beater" P/J Squier (£50 from Crack Converters, and already endeared to me as a lovely player) to Bartolinis. Absolutely transformed it, to the point where I'm rather embarassingly gigging it in preference to my vintage Fender, Ric and Gibsons.
 13.
Roger Glover -no mention yet? Cripes
+1 great rock bassist, always mixed too low on recordings +1 also (haven't figured how to multiquote...) to Andy Rourke (Smiths) and Derek Forbes (Simple Minds) - absolutely key to the sound of two of my favourite bands Mine; Barry Adamson (ex Magazine, Bad Seeds); in my top three of any list - such an effortlessly simple great sound and groove Andy Pask (Landscape) - shame about the dire "Einstein a Go-go" as they were a great quirky jazz-rock outfit, saw them at Eric's in Liverpool 1980 - inspired me to change to fretless Bassist with "Roxy Music" Manifesto-era; John Gustafason? Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) - no virtuoso, but solid & funky
 14.
I find DSOTM works best when you are stoned. Not having been under the influence for nearly 15 years now has resulted in it being relegated on my list... it's still up there though.
Reminded me - the last time I'd seen "Live at Pompeii" before the TV showing last week was at a double bill film show at Liverpool Uni student union some 30-odd years ago. There was a cloud of ganja-smoke filling the entire room and hanging just above our heads that you could have cut with a knife; I remember the other film on the bill was Jimi Hendrix live at somewhere-or-other, but very little after that.......
 15. My main gigging amp for a while has been a '91 Eden VT.40 (with Eden 410XLT if backlining or Aguilar GS112 if DI-ing) - these were fitted with Demeter all-valve pre's, which I beleive led to the model being discontinued as too expensive to make. Totally happy with it, and even by modern standards it's pretty compact & lightweight. Haven't tried the newer models, but you do hear frequently that the quality is not as good as the older models - whereas the Walkabout always seems to be highly praised by owners and reviews. So as suggested above, do try s/h if you can. I think Beedster recently changed from a Walkabout to an Aguilar pre / Mesa power rig - may be worth asking his opinion. There have been a couple of the Eden Navigator pre-amps FS recently (don't know if this is still available - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/121801-eden-navigator/page__hl__navigator__fromsearch__1 ) - I was extremely tempted to get one and pair with a decent 1u digital power amp for a seriously nice portable rig.

 17. Just saw this; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Gibson-Parts-Bridge-Cover-EB-Tbird-Bass-/260859530354?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3cbc708c72 - it's the 70's bridge cover and unfinished but may fit better than a Fender one?
 18. No one mentioned Syd yet??? One of the true geniuses of English songwriting, until he fried his brain. (used to live just up the road from me in Cambridge too) All Floyd is sublime and quite unique, but post Rog it was rather like "Wings" after "Beatles" - melodic, but the guts and heart had gone. At the Live8 thing it was quite a contrast to see how much better Rog has aged (physically) compared to Dave too.
 19. Very cool thats something Ive wanted to do for ages Reckon it would look even more rawk refinned in red or black tho........
 20.
Greg, this'll be the first of your trips to Cambridge for a while at which we haven't met up
True, I was racking my brains to think of a trade of mutual benefit, but couldn't come up with anything........maybe we're approaching Nirvana (ie; a GAS-free state of being )
If you need a place for it to rest a few hours/days/weeks in Cambridge, my house is your house.
Catch the Cherry Hinton folk festival bremen? Earliest musical exposure was opening my bedroom window at night in the '70's when the festival (quarter of a mile away) was on......Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Ralph McTell, Chieftans..........
 21.
so as the Welsh say 'there we are'.
Usually; "There We Are Then...." as an underhand risposte to something stupid the other party has just said (work out the acronym....... ) Lovely bass there BTW
 22. Thanks for the good words guys, and good to know how highly regarded Paul was by BC-ers Bass now withdrawn from sale
 23. This is a very lovely 5 string – the “Rex” model I think. Hand-built in around 2005 by Paul MacNab in Huddersfield, who sadly passed away in July 2010. I’d call it a lightweight, but can weigh for those interested. Paul had a reputation not only as an outstanding luthier, but also for being extremely choosey about selecting the loveliest tonewoods for his instruments, and this sure shows here. I acquired this in a trade with lozbass with a view to potentially moving from 4 to 5 string, but as the material I’ve been playing hasn’t demanded a 5 plus I’ve been focussing on my flamenco playing (and am just venturing into bluegrass banjo!) this hasn’t had the playing time it deserves. Specs;

1-piece mahogany body with carved quilt maple top (5A grade I reckon), clear amber finish
34” scale bolt-on neck; highly flamed maple with rosewood / bubinga / ebony laminations. Oil / wax finish on “playing zone” of neck, varnished headstock & heel. Wenge board (dot markers to side only), 24 frets. Schaller BM tuners.
Twin soapbar pickups (German “Goldo” make), active 9V circuit with bass & treble cut/boost, individual volume controls for each p/up. Pull switch on rear vol control for active / passive operation. (NB' I've actually bought an East U-retro preamp to fit in this, but as yet unfitted. Can negotiate included if interested)
Heavy duty chrome Goldo bridge; allows individual string spacing lateral adjustment.
These were around £1200 new at the time, and this is a rare example in outstanding condition. Price drop to £425 for a quick sale (in Tobias soft case) for one week only (to Sat 24th Nov) after which it will definitely be withdrawn - plus shipping, or collection from Swansea area - no trades, sorry. I'll be at M4 Reading services on Sun 25th Nov if that's easier for anyone interested to collect Cheers, Greg
 24. Probably no help at all, but I'm on my regular Swansea <-> Cambridge run next weekend. If someone (student?) can get it down to Cambridge, I can take down to M25 Though being something of an Ovation-head, I probably wouldn't want to let it go......
 25. Schaller bridge the best 4-string unit ever IMHO, way more attractive and more configurable than a badass. Wish I could think of a reason for buying another one, but bump for some cool gear
