1.
Off topic, is that a Red Gibbo Explorer? . (No, I can't afford it). I had me a white one for about 15 years, loved it, sold it for £400 to a mate. I think I have evolved into a dickhead!
Yes, original Ferrari red '85 Of my five Gibson basses it's actually the one I've gigged the most - cracking basses
  2.
The red bass thing is the result of myself and a few mates trying to put together a Southern Boogie thing down here to play pubs, nothing too serious (or too good), and it got me thinking that I'd like a fretted bass that's a bit more Rock 'n' Roll than anything I've got at present. C
You need to buy this off me mate......... Seriously though, that Gretsch is absolutely lush.
  3. Bought a pair of P / J Bartolini pickups off Rob; smooth deal, great communication - cheers!
  4.
Thought I'd close this. Having not spent much longer tahn around a month with the Stingray HH, and then having tried a Jazz and a heavily pimped Squier Jag P/J (lovely bass by the way), I'm now pretty much decided on my old Ric 4003 FL, which was recently repatriated from Wales courtesy of Greg (Shaggy), who did a great job or sourcing original Ric PUPs for it. I have to admit that, in relation to this thread, it would have been way down my initial list, but I and the band love it, and it just works for the music we're doing Funny how things work out isn't it.
God damn, you're making me want it back! Actually even for a Ric it's a pretty special bass. How's the maple-board fretless P working out? I'm loving the '65 P; funny how the three P basses that finally sold me on Fenders you've also owned at some point.......
  5.
Upon further investigation, McGeogh's actually a very good source for soundclips of the rhythm tone as most people play lead style licks and phrasing on these guitars.
Nail on the head, and I was thinking more of his previous work with Magazine; never flashy, but wonderful tone and complemented the band sound rather than vice-versa. Saw them in '80 and his Yammy was just the same as yours. Wish I had something to trade........
  6. Also weapon of choice of the late John McGeogh - my fave guitarist of the last 30 years. Bump for a fabulous axe......
  7. Blimey there's some nice old Fenders up FS at the moment! Sign of the times? Anyway, I'm just as happy to keep this babe - bonding fast with it (it's the Superglue......) so will only bump a couple of times. Just to say I'd deliver as far as Reading, provided a 3-way deal can be arranged with the owner of the other Fender. EDIT : NOW WITHDRAWN - as the one I was after has gone!
  8. Right, I've only has this a week and am totally smitten by her, BUT I've the chance on another '60's Fender............ All the details in Beedsters original post here - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl='65 - the one change is that it now has a Fender '62 RI pickup (as in the CS Fenders), which is my favourite "boutique" P pi/up and of course perfect for this bass. Price is £2500, thanks but no trades as it's a specific bass I'm after. Would have to be pickup or meet - I'm near Swansea but would meet by Bristol for a definite sale. Beedsters pics and a couple of new ones:
  9. That pic should be in every illustrated dictionary, next to "Rock n' roll"................. Class
  10.
FYI, I have just been PM'd one potential offer with the BC'er concerned coming back to me this evening with a definitive yes/no, depending on the precise weight of the bass (which I think is close to 9 pounds but I need to check with my digital scales when I get home)
It's a lightweight even for an early '70's, so hope that deal's on Lovely, lovely bass, with tone & playability to die for..... Definitely one for a player rather than a collector, but its 2 great virtues are - 1. the mods (ebony board, J p/up, rear neck finish) are actually sensible ones that make it as an instrument waaaay better than stock, and 2. although a '71 it's still very much a late '60's "golden era" Fender - light weight, nitro finish, all parts fit snugly, fabulous neck. Great price too, especially with the '71 bridge. Just acquired Beedsters '65 P, otherwise I'd be thinking hard about this......
  11.
What will happen next is Beedster will sell it to me, I will then trade it back to Beedster in return for an amp plus cash, which he will later proceed to buy back off me. Eventually we meet in a dodgy service station and in an emotional moment I then sell the bass back to him for the third time. Or something like that
You have no idea how close to the truth you are............
Rehearsed it last night. first time I've played electric bass with the band for almost a year. Took a bit of time to get the sound right, but once I did it was sweet as! the old '60s toaster Greg installed is lovely. Rehearsing the maple fretless Precision tomorrow
Glad to hear that, and yes; Rics always need a bit of "fettling" to give their best - which strings did you use after?
  12. Shaggy

    Pointy

The "black sheep" of my basses (or rather red............)
  13. * SIGHS * Why did I let you go, my proud beauty? 99% sure it's nitro on alder
  14. Any bass combined with the following stage attire........... (With apologies to "Jeff")
  15. Now TRADED - cheers to all who PM'ed / posted
  16. Lovely bass - I hummed and ha-ed about this when HJ owned it until it was to late....... Not been too much interest in my 4003FL; I think bassists looking for a fretless just don't think of Rickenbacker, and bassists looking for a Rick don't tend to be also looking for a fretless. Which is a damn shame, as they make fantastic fretlesses; a core tone I've not heard in any other, with the bonus of being one of the best looking basses on the planet. Bump for a fab vintage Rick!
  17.
And what is this bass you are looking at... is it my Gibson?
Still GAS-ing for your LP, but I assumed you'd be keeping it now you've funded your Jetglo 4003? Actually what I'm looking at is also a Les Paul - but a six-stringer. Playing more rythm these days, and too many basses!
I've always fancied a fretless Rickenbacker (although I'd like a fretless Wal even more) & if I wasn't facing possible redundancy at the moment I'd be very interested. Why the non-original truss rod cover?
My main fretless is a Wal Mk 1 Custom, but the Ric is just as special in a slightly different way, mainly as it does that organic woody upright bass-y sound that no active can quite do and has probably the best sustain of any I've played. Re the TRC; Beedster completed this bass in 2009 from a NOS bass that the UK dealer had removed some parts from as spares - the TRC and jack plate were the only 2nd hand Ric components, taken from a '70's 4001. Should've put that in the initial post, so apologies for that
  18. Bank Holiday offer of £950 (& shipping), lasting only whilst the guitar I've got my eye on is still available! Just put some light guage d'Addario half-round nickels on this which definitely add a bit more zing and growl to the "mwah", will include the Pyramid Gold flats which are light use only. Also throw in an as-new genuine Ric strap (logo embossed on shoulder pad), Canadian-made all thick black leather.
  19.
Just ask a concert violin soloist how much he is prepared to pay for a 100 years old Stradivarius (we are talking £70-80 thousand average, by the way) and then you get an idea as to why to a professional orchestra violinist spending that money is essential to their job.
To be pedantic , Stradivarius was making violins (& guitars & cellos) in the late 17th > early 18th Century, so they're now around 300+ years old, and they go for £Millions. Acoustic instruments definitely need to be "played in" - the vibrations help the wood become more resonant. I read somewhere that a violin "peaks" at around 100 years old, and after around 200 years starts to gradually deteriorate as the wood becomes more brittle and oxidised. So all those Stradivarii will soon be no better than modern Chinese cheapos. Me, I like basses, motorbikes and cars made from the late '50's to early '80's, mainly as they're low tech, over-engineered, and quirky - sometimes in a good way, sometimes bad.
  20. Ah, thought you were after a vintage Gibbo. You'd find an LP Money on European ebay fairly easily I'd have thought (as you have), they don't go for that much Yeah, we get clobbered for 20% VAT from the US, it's not as cheap an option as it once was but for Gibsons and Ricks is often still cheapest..
  21. I stumbled across that one a couple of years ago, and recognised a few of the basses that were FS then! I'd love that black bicentennial T'bird though....... I've no experience of dealing with him but the guy obviously knows his his stuff and the photography is excellent; he shares my interest in the older models (bottom of page - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=76091&st=40 and top of next one). Prices are top dollar but that's what you'd expect from a specialist on-line store, see also Gruhn's which is the gold standard for Gibsons and totally kosher - http://www.gruhn.com/ Best advice is to swot up on sites like that and these; http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/index.php http://www.flyguitars.com/ http://vintage-guitars.blogspot.com/2006/0...ss-guitars.html and then buy on US ebay - where I've got most of mine; you get hit with shipping, customs & VAT but they're way cheaper in the first place
