Please don't put a MMite neck on it...is that just a cruel way to make me buy it back (and starve the children for a few months)? BB
I'm sure your kids would rather you had a nice Xmas prezzie for a change instead of them.... Anyway fear not, original neck aint going anywhere, I've really just done the opposite of what WoT did with his fretted '71 when he put a fretless Allparts neck on - just gives you an easily swappable option.

Luverly! I think it's a Diesel cab though rather than the Powerhouse - pedantic I know! -

I once had a bass do that (with the A), tried everything to find it - just like that old VW ad with the mystery "squeak". In the end I could only assume it was the truss rod resonating; it seemed to come from the neck, and got shot of it. So not much help really - best thing is just check every nut & screw is tight, bridge saddles are firmly where they're supposed to be, nut hasn't come unglued, and try a change of strings.
Hah, no way! Damn, that's a nice looking bass. I do agree though, they would make more sense with bits swapped over! Where did you find the pre-EB neck?
Came with my fretted (maple) '80 Sabre as a "spare" - it had a fretted rosewood board but someone had overtightened the truss rod and slightly split the board at the top end, also lost the truss rod adjust nut. Otherwise fine - I had a local luthier put an African Blackwood fretless board on, check the truss rod was OK, and he found a Fender bullet truss rod nut that fitted. Lovely body colour on yours - I'm guessing it's a later period (mid '80's?) one as it's got the pole-less p/ups.

No expert whatsovever, but in my experience farty noises / nasty distortion / lack of vol is always the power valves: decent preamp valves pretty much go on forever. As a first step just try taking them out, checking the contact pins are clean, and re-seating them firmly. I know Molan had the same trouble recently, not sure what the outcome was. At least if/when you have to replace all the power valves there's only 6 - one reason I got an SVT rather than the Mesa 400+ with 12 of 'em!
how about this little gem it's an Epiphone Allen Woody signature Rumblekat. semi hollow body, arch top & very nice it is too. (excuse the crap photo's they are the best i could manage now it's dark) it is a lovely bass & sounds propper thunderous. 30.5 " scale & only 4 weeks old. it has the propper Epiphone fitted hardcase with it too. i had no intention of selling it but i accidently bought an EBMM Stingray yesterday (you know like you do )
Got to say Epiphone are making some absolutely cracking semi-ac basses at the moment. This would be my pick of what's for sale just now, if you can live with it being short-scale and fretless, lovely vintage bass and amazing price - seen one going for $2K in the US: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Ovation-Fret...=item3efa1f0e2b Semi's / hollow-bodies definitely have a sound that you just can't get any other way, use mine loads (Gordon Smith Galaxy, Gibson EB-2 & EB-2D); going to have to try one of the modern piezo ones Edit: re post above - those Rivolis were made by Peerless (Korea) and are really rated highly

Carrying on with the vintage theme: my '80 Sabre. It was my one and only bass for years and years, but sadly doesn't get much of a look-in anymore

Stunning, though I'd have stopped after the first two. And maybe the Alembic. And....... You're bass to the bone, alanbass!

Just scored another pack of 3 Hartke “transient attack” nickel round/w bass strings on t’bay, I usually get the 4-string packs (quite reasonably, as all my basses are 4-string), but it worked out a quid cheaper getting the 5-string packs. So 3 brand new shiny low B-strings if anyone wants for the price of postage. They’re “medium” gauge, long scale, but I’ll check the quoted diameter if anyone wants. Decent strings too – good as any nickels I’ve used, for a stupidly low price.

Never had an HH amp, although the guitarist in my first "school" band had a shiny new Valve-Sound combo - we were all dead impressed, especially as had back-lighting. For about a decade though I ran my old Fender Bassman 135 through a big old HH 2x15 - monster cab, monster weight. Never sure why they went under, as I always reckoned they were technologically ahead of Carlsbro, Laney etc, and way cooler design styling too.

There was a time when if you watched TOPTP almost every bassist had one of these...... Love that double-neck!
Interesting, that song has quite the unusual tone, but never figured if it was the bass itself or all that processing. hows it done?
Alot of compression and a touch of flange/chorus and overdrive I'd say - typical '80's power ballad production! They're naturally growly basses though, with a natural acoustic-like resonance (the mahogany I guess) and massive low end on the neck p/u
