1.
That was one of the first things I learned too. Space Ritual I take it? That album pretty much taught me how to play. Love it to this day.
Yup - lost my copy when Mrs Shaggy made me sell all my vinyl (300 albums) at car boot sales pre-move - must get the CD! Simple, driving, melodic playing from Lemmy.
  2. Nothing beats the pleasure of that very first "suss" - in my case "Down through the night" (Hawkwind - live version) more years ago than I care to count

Slick deal with Will, clearly a great bloke even though he probably supports Leeds. Make sure you post the pics of the short scale build , Will!
  4.
These days I use rechargeables, and stick a full one in every gig. There's no reason why all preamps should have the same current drain though. I guess cheap basses (mines the yamaha 375) have cheap preamps with higher drain?.
Same here. All my actives (apart from the Eagle) are oldies and suck batteries dry in no time compared to modern pre-amps. The new Ni-Mh rechargables hold much more charge than the old Ni-Cd ones and are pretty cheap now - use them in my pedal too
  5.

Me too! Is that the original finish? All the other old white ones I've seen have gone yellow
  6. I thought this thread was going to be about neck pockets and extra-deep neck pockets! 4 pages later I’m none the wiser, but it did remind me of a joke so old Frank Carson probably used it; A hippy (read; bassist) was ambling along through the fields one day, probably looking for “mushrooms”, when he trips over a leprechaun “Ah, yer great hippy eejit” curses the leprechaun, “an’ I suppose ye’ll be wanting yer three wishes now?” “Three wishes?” muses the hippy “Like………crazy. OK man, I wanna be uptight, outta sight, and in the groove” So……….. …the leprechaun turned him into a sanitary towel. Coat. Mine. I'll get.
  7.
i think you'll find the most logical answer is feel (perhaps tone also). some people (for example sting) have used their intruments they have used from the start (his fender telecaster bass) and you see its all 'weathered'.
Could be wrong, but I remember him starting on a mid-70's natural / maple neck Precision fretless, moving onto a Ibanez Artist Musican fretless around '80, and then various others until the '50's P / telecaster relatively recently. I always liked his sound best with the Ibanez - on "Message in a bottle", "Walking on the moon" etc (the reason I got one around the same time)
  8. Unfortunately I've had to pull out of this, and I've PM'd my apologies to Delberthot - so still yours if you want it Rob
  9.
Damn you!
Sorry dude, couldn't resist it - but if you still want it I'll pull out; let me know when it's done up I expect I'll get bored and sell it on anyway!
  10. I honestly don’t know the answer to this, wish I did! I’ve owned so many basses in 31 years of playing, always moved on basses I didn’t get on with and kept ones I did – result, got too many basses, most of them old but modded to play and/or sound (to me) better than stock. Though I’ve had and moved on some horrible old basses too Being entirely objective, the “best” - in terms of materials, design, and craftsmanship - 4 string I ever owned was a 1980 Ibanez Artist Musician (bought brand new), and the “best” bass of all in every respect a 2004 Listerud Totem 7. But I just didn’t bond with either of them. . I guess if I were a pro – which I’m not; or a virtuoso – which I’m certainly not; or did a lot of recording – which I don’t; - my choice of basses would be different. But as a weekend warrior I want a bass I can play live that feels and sounds rock n’ roll and so far I’ve only got that from old basses – if that’s an image thing then it’s self-image not projected image that matters to me. Probably makes no sense; see first line of post!
  11.
I knew I'd offend someone......hope you're looking after that old Pbass, and not putting it too close to the Magnum..... BB
Why - what sort of mutant offspring would they produce? NB; The P is still my main squeeze - now got a Badass II back on it, definitely improved sustain.
  12.
The old Ovation Magnums are a good bet...but really ugly. Somebody will correct me, I know.... BB
Oooh you heartless swine! She’s all offended now…… Jah Wobble famously gets his dub sound on these, and me and Alison Goldfrapp think they’re bloomin gorgeous! Gibson EB's too, but I reckon you can't beat a P with flats and the tone rolled off.
  13. These are the Rolls Royce (or more properly; Cadillac Eldorado) of cases and bloomin great – I’ve got two. Agreed, a new one like this you’d almost hate to take gigging, but the one for my Gibson is always gigged as it’s the only case that’ll fit it - and still going strong after 30 years, nicely mojo'd. (+1000 for Hiscox though!) Bump for a lovely case at a great price - for a cherished old Fender, there’s absolutely nothing better, and would also make it a far more attractive deal if ultimately selling
  14. Lovin’ those “model” pics! I had one of your old ones with the Jetglo Rick 4003 as my PC desktop for a while, and ended up buying a Jetglo 4001. Subliminal advertising….. :brow:
  15.
Just wondering cos I know of a few locally.Does it affect the way you play/interpret bass lines melodically? Iain
Not really, but it's probably why I was so immediately comfortable with fretless.
  16.
Here's one I prepared earlier ... I'm proud of the way I've kept my figure.
Lookin' good there Happy Jack! Hmmm, so as not to infringe censorship legislation, some us would need to pose behind Thunderbirds, whilst others would make do with a Chapman stick. Outtoplayjazz would probably need his double bass, whilst at least one I know would be OK with just a plectrum. Personally, my “P” would cover it. Oh, and two 8x10’s of course
  17.
. also saw Siouxsie at the ABC in Glasgow in march of this year.another great gig
She’s still got it hasn’t she? Moments of brilliance on the “MantaRay” album I thought. And gorgeous with it…….. I saw the Banshees play an impromptu gig as “Janet & the Icebergs” at Eric’s in Liverpool, John McGeogh on guitar. Not that I was so much into nu-romanticism, and now all we see is the sanitised TOTP2 version with kitschy videos of Culture Club, Marilyn, Spandau Ballet, Adam & the Ants, Bananarama et al, but there seemed to me at the time to be a definite North – South divide in the same way there was with Northern Soul; the Northern scene had a harder, more dance/club focussed, more emotionally charged edge to it compared to the more pop / style-orientated South. If you see the film “Letter to Brezhnev” which was filmed just around the end of that time (1984?) you’ll see what I mean, and it’s a great film anyway.
  18. Have to say the occasional time I’ve logged onto Rick Resource they seem genuinely curious rather than scandalised about classic Rickenfakers; plenty of good info there, but also that strange, rather humourless obsessiveness you get on US single-make forums – compared to the comfortable cyber-pub that is Basschat. At the other end of the spectrum, after a few visits to the Red Dwarf that is Finnbass, it gave our work server a nervous breakdown and permanently blocked access for no apparent reason! Shame. On topic – like the custom Rick, prefer it to Lemmy’s or the mod looking red one that Paul Wellers bassist is using.
  19.
Nice rig choice btw....
I had some good advice It does however weigh only very slightly less than Jupiter Your 1516BE is just in on the left of the pic - under the Trace TV, which is my "hi-fi" rig, unlike the rig above which is about as subtle as a drive-by shooting!
  20. OOoooooooo - this the carpet-faced or the mesh-faced one?
  21. Easily, yes. But on the other hand....... ........you can't snog in the back of a bass.
  22.
One last thought about the New Romantic era is that it was definitely a reaction to Punk in the sense that Punk was supposedly 'anti-fashion' and 'anti-style- whereas New Romantics were obsessive about style and fashion..
I clearly remember around 1980 our drummer turning up for a gig in a huge frilly white shirt and “pirate” bandana (we were pretty much a straight punk band) and the rest of us taking the p*ss something rotten! I was in Liverpool then where the nu-romantic club scene was absolutely massive, part of the entertainment each night was just clocking the utterly amazing outfits and make-up – nothing so flamboyant in these post-grunge times. OMD, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, and the Mighty Wah were just unsigned local bands then you’d see almost weekly. Hugely into Japan, and post-punk bands like Magazine, Siouxie and the Banshees, and Joy Division around that time, but +1 for John Foxx era Ultravox; “Hiroshima mon amour”, “Quiet Men”, and “Maximum acceleration” still some of my favourite listening material. Great times……..pass me my eye-liner......…
  23.
Nicely done! We bassists are suckers for flashing coloured lights aren't we?
One of things I always liked – and miss – about my old Trace Elliots, that funky green glow. Surprised it’s not a more universal feature on amps when even the most basic domestic stereos usually have back-lighting. Thanks for all the good feedback!
