She's really good at playing bass. And singing. However my natural british guardedness makes me cringe whenever anyone sings a capella. Weirdly that seems to extends to bass and singing. Hmmm. But that's my problem, not hers. Cool.

A couple of videos of me playing...

Thanks ped! You're a POD man too, if I remember correctly... The floating thumb it's a recent addition to my arsenal. I've come from being a pick player to fingerstyle quite recently. Here's a transitional video of me a year ago, anchored thumb and pick-like technique with the fingers! An arrangement of Mogwai's Tracy: -
This is my bass. I can't imagine ever needing another. Had it for three years now...

Thanks guys! The robe is Ikea's finest, and is perfect for those short winter days.
I really like the sound of your bass, what were the settings to get that sound?
I've got both bridge and neck pickups on 100% nd the tone all the way up. From this I go into my bass PODxt Live, and straight from there to my mac with garageband. The amp sim on the POD is Rock classic with the drive up at 12 o clock, into a simulated 8x10 with flat eq and no effects. Simply does it! -
Hey gang, Here are a couple of videos i made this afternoon to take my mind off a Feeling Gloomy inspired hangover. One is with a pick, the other with fingers. Any advice is very happily recieved! With fingers: With a pick: Thanks!

It's definitely the socket. Problem is, the keyboard is moulded and glued shut!

Hey gang. I've an old usb midi keyboard. It works fine, except for the fact that the signal keep dropping out. you have to wiggle tthe usb cable and it comes back on, but if you bump the keyboard too hard it stops working. Is there a simple fix for this? If you don't know, does anyone know of an electronics forum for simple fixes like this? It's the B-type connector: the middle one! Cheers,

I submit that the limit of your technical ability functions in a similar fashion to an asymptope: Ignore the line in the top left corner. Imagine this graph has technical ability on the y-axis and time and effort put into practice/study on the x-axis. When you start out, even a little time gives you a huge gain. Your first half hour of playing sees you going from having never hit a note, to fretting with the left hand and plucking with the right. A massive improvement. And your theory knowledge has gone from being aware that some notes are higher than others, to knowing that an octave has twelve steps from E to E. A huge progression. As you get better, though, the difference is less obvious. Today, do 16ths at 80bpm. Tomorrow, do 16ths at 85bpm. Eventually you will hit something of a ceiling where for all the work you are putting in, the gains feel so small that you are no longer motivated to keep pushing it. Or, you keep pushing it, but you can't tell that you're getting better. Maybe?

Do the audience really appreciate quality sound?
Room dimension make a huge difference and different people responses will always be different but ill try this out of my own choices. Please dont flame me, discussion of it is fine Boost bass at = difficult due to preference in sound.. personally i love the mids. Cut around 200-400Hz to relieve the mix of muddyness Boost guitar at = around 1khzz-3khz (if you have 2 boost the other around 700-900hz) sperate the mix Boost vox= slightly somewhere around 500 hz to add bottom (experiment with diff singers) then 1-3khz for definition. Cut the highs. Try a 4:1 compression ratio with a soft knee Keys: Flat EQ or possibly cut bass as theyre designed to sound that way already Oh and if the kickdrums mic'd make sure to remove 200-400hz imo Wot ne of u guys think?
Brilliant - thanks for the tips. Just looking for some initial anchor points from which to investigate! Thanks too, Bremen. Anyone got any other tips / different opinions? -
Yeah. 'Excellent Condition' is a bit ambiguous. I can understand that if something is completely unscathed, scratched or damaged that it can be in exellent condition, even if there is a layer of dust. Either way, spruce it up and see what's what!

Do the audience really appreciate quality sound?
Cantdosleepy replied to Perry's topic in General Discussion
A friend of mine once bet his band that he could play a whole gig with his bass detuned a semitone and that no one in the audience would notice. He won his bet - the RAF audience thought the gig was great even though the bass was horribly out of key all night. (Maybe he was out of key every gig? )
Man, that's pretty depressing. 'I could be playing anything. Noone notices'. Kinda makes you lose the drive to nail those riffs. Is there an idiots guide to quickly eq-ing a toilet-venue band for easy separation/reasonable mix? Could someone with good knowledge start and sticky a topic like that? eg: Four pice vox/guit/bass/drums- Boost bass at XXXhz, cut at XXXhz Boost guit at YYYhz cut at NNNhz, make him play only the top four strings Boost Vox at PPPhz, cut at DDDhz, limit at this threshold, try this compression ratio..? Keys: break his left hand, cut at SSShz That would be amazing! Those of us starting out in crap places without this wealth of experience would really appreciate something like this! -
How good do you need to be to work in a cover band?
Cantdosleepy replied to Cantdosleepy's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for all the amazing advice, guys! To be honest, I think that the commitment would be too much at this point. I'm going to be doing three jobs in 2008 as it is. Loads of great advice, though. Cheers! -
Ultimate Ear Training for Guitar and Bass by Gary Willis is worth a punt, too: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ear-Trainin...s/dp/0793581567

Hey gang. I live in London and could do with a little extra money. I'm toying with the idea of thinking of joining a cover band, to improve my live chops and make a few quid on the side. I have two questions, really: 1) How good do you need to be to get into one 2) Is it worth doing, from a financial point of view? I'm not talking about thousands of pounds a night - if I could come away from a gig with fifty quid in my pocket every time that would be smashing. Are those the big leagues? I've got good enough equipment, I reckon. Cheers! (apologies in advance if this comes off as staggeringly naive...)

I don't have a name for my bass. I find it a bit weird.

Artists you wouldn't attempt to learn.
Cantdosleepy replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely. And I really do admire those people with the kind of single-mindedness to sit down and try to master a new technique, then another, then an artist, then an album. I'm more of a piecemeal kin of person. To my disappointment. -

Cantdosleepy replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
To be honest I probably will never attempt to learn the big names that are thrown around on this forum. I wouldn't attempt to learn any artist that slaps or pops, any speed freaks, any jazz masters. Not the sort of music I like to listen to or play. I know there's the argument 'you might learn something anyway'. I think that line of reasoning is true. Had I but world enough, and time, I'd probably try and learn that stuff. But as it is there's more than a lifetime's music out there that I already adore and skills that I covet more drastically. Why learn to slap on the chance I'll develop a taste for it when I still can't play my favourite bands' songs / skateboard / cook as awesomely as I'd like? -
How may Basses do we own collectively on Basschat?

And 'Paul, the' got 606. It's drum machine fun for all! -
Hey gang. I'm getting my brother a kit guitar for xmas and I'm maybe going to suggest that the parents get him a mini kaoss pad. The idea is he can install it in the guitar like the one Matt Bellamy from Muse has. Will it work with the pickups' mic level volume, or do I need a mini boost between pickup and Kaoss for it to work properly? And cn you get such a thing that will fit ion the body of the guitar?

Richer Sounds = warm bath of love. PMT in Oxford was lovely the last time I was there.

I take my bass to practice rooms with other amps, and use it in my bedroom with the amp turned down, and use it at gigs where I share the amp of the headliner or use the house amp. The bass is far more important to me, and the thing I am thinkin of pimping out with new pickups. Haven't bought a new bass since I got this one two years ago, though, and I bought an amp and cabinet this year. My first amp and cab, and I'm not going to be changing soon.
